Jewellery expert shares how to match your nails to your rings

Matching your nails to your jewellery
With #engagementnails picking up more than 94 million views on TikTok1, Nilesh shares: “Whether you're a silver or gold jewellery person, make sure you’re choosing colours and shapes that complement your preferred nail designs.

“When it comes to an engagement ring, you can use your nail colour to enhance the colour of the stone in the piece. Neutral nail colours are one of the safer choices as they pair perfectly with a variety of gemstone colours.

“If you love colour and maximalism, then your nails and jewellery should reflect this. Bright and bold shades are great if your gemstone is coloured, like a blue sapphire or green emerald. You can pair these hues with colours that work well together - for example a deep maroon shade for rubies, or brick red for sapphires. Also, opting for stacked pieces of jewellery and finishing with a bold colour or nail art will give you the opportunity to express your personality.” 

Which metals compliment each other?
Nilesh says: “When choosing a new piece of jewellery to compliment your current regular pieces, the most important thing to consider is the undertones of the metal. Cooler tones, such as white gold and silver, will work better together. Similarly, warmer toned pieces, for example yellow gold and rose gold can work well with each other. 

“If you’re looking for an engagement ring, ensure you consider your partner’s current jewellery collection, which metals do they tend to opt for? It’s also important to keep this in mind when purchasing wedding rings to make sure the two work well together. 

“On the other hand, whilst it may be controversial to some, wearing both gold and silver together is becoming more normalised and can add a modern edge to your look.”

Matching your skin’s undertones
Nilesh advises: “Another key consideration is which colours will best suit your skin tone, and similarly to how the metals compliment each other, it all comes down to the undertones. 

“Silver, platinum and white gold pieces will generally compliment skin with a cooler undertone, whilst yellow and rose gold jewellery will often be most flattering on warmer skin tones. 

“Both cool and warm undertones can be seen across fair and deep skin tones, so understanding which category you fit within will help you choose the most complimentary jewellery pieces. 

“There are a number of ways to discover your skin’s undertones; firstly, assessing the colour of your veins on your wrist. Greener veins mean warmer undertones, whilst blue or purple veins mean that your skin has cool undertones. 

“Another way to find your skin’s undertone is to place a white towel next to your face, the contrast between this and your skin will allow you to identify the undertone more easily. If you have warmer undertones your skin will appear more yellow next to the bold white colour, whilst cooler skin will appear more pink.”

Chunky vs delicate jewellery
Nilesh comments: “When it comes to chunky or delicate jewellery, it depends on your personal style, and the occasion it will be worn for. Chunkier jewellery is often eye-catching, posing as a statement piece within any outfit, whilst daintier jewellery is often better for everyday wear, or adding a hint of sparkle to your look.”

How to find the perfect gemstone
Nilesh shares: “The gemstone is often the focal point of a piece of any jewellery, so it’s important to understand which will work best based on the objective of the piece. 

“If you’re purchasing a birthday gift for a loved one for example, birthstone jewellery is a great option to create sentimental value.”
