Your Yorkshire Wedding - May/June 2024 (Issue 66)

46 https://georginaharrisonphotography.co.uk THE LITTLE FLOWER HUT BEST OF BRITISH I’d love to have locally grown British blooms at my wedding. What can you suggest? “A British flower wedding is always exciting,” Liz says. “I always suggest that the wedding flowers be based on colour rather than flower variety, unless there’s something really specific a couple would like, due to the British climate and time of year. Sweet peas, dahlias, cosmos, antirrhinums, larkspur, tulips and anemone are always among the favourites.” Vicki Endersby from York-based Wonderland Blooms (www.wonderlandblooms.uk) continues, “Ah the allure of homegrown treasures! Transport yourself to a quintessential English garden with a bouquet brimming with locally sourced British blooms. Bringing rustic charm is easy and creating a sustainable wedding in this way is leading trends. Seeking local flowers is easy, type into your search engine ‘flower farms near me,’ and you’ll be hit with a splendour of growers and fellow flower lovers. My personal favourites are Gathered at Dusk (www.gatheredatdusk.co.uk), and Bloom & Gray Flower Farm (www.bloomandgray.co.uk).” Jill says, “Embracing seasonal, locally grown flowers at your wedding isn’t only a breathtakingly beautiful choice, but an incredibly sustainable one. By sourcing blooms at the peak of their natural cycles from nearby farms and growers, you reduce the environmental impact of transportation while supporting your local community. Nature’s floral bounty ebbs and flows with the changing seasons, offering a rotating cast of vibrant blooms to delight throughout the year. As winter fades, spring ushers in an explosion of cheery daffodils, romantic peonies, and pristine lily of the valley. Summer’s warmth beckons lush garden roses, vibrant sunflowers, and ethereal hydrangeas, before autumn’s crisp air mingles with the rich hues of dahlias and chrysanthemums. Even winter allows hardy hellebores, paperwhites, and festive amaryllis to flourish. By celebrating each flower’s fleeting seasonal moment, we appreciate Britain’s constantly renewing natural beauty. No matter the month, the ephemeral essence of fresh blooms curated by an experienced and artful florist can transform any space into a fragrant oasis for your big day.” GREENFINGERS How can we keep sustainability at the forefront when choosing our flowers? “Think about how you’re going to dress your wedding and what arrangements can be used twice,” Vicki says. “Welcome sign florals then go on the seating plan. Aisle meadows move onto the top table. The use of potted plants, flowers and herbs can create a feeling of abundance and can be given away and planted after the wedding.” For Liz, when it comes to planning sustainable wedding flowers, it’s about using containers rather than oasis. “For example, a floral arch can be created on a wooden structure totally foam free using long-lasting foliage that will stand out of water and using test tubes and containers to add the flowers rather than oasis,” she explains. https://georginaharrisonphotography.co.uk www.gingersnapsphoto.co.uk THE LITTLE FLOWER HUT WONDERLAND BLOOMS WONDERLAND BLOOMS www.kazooieloki.co.uk Obed Hernandez on Unsplash
