West Yorkshire based Titanic Spa, the UK’s first eco-spa, is a perfect balance of self care whilst ensuring the same level of care for the environment. Some of the eco-friendly attributes that Titanic Spa boasts include the spa’s renewable energy generation through solar photovoltaic roof panels, as well as its very own natural water source, found 100m below the Spa. This was the original water source when the building was working as an Edwardian textile mill and provides fresh drinking water and bathing water for Titanic Spa’s plunge pool, salt regulated swimming pool, showers and ice experience. Ice experience, I hear you ask? Yes, your heard correctly! Titanic Spa’s Fire & Ice experience certainly got the blood flowing! It’s based on the ritual of bathing where the body is heated and then cooled by a series of sensory experiences. At first reluctant to submerge my cosy, relaxed body into the icy plunge pool, I took the plunge, excuse the pun, and then dashed straight into the sauna where my body actually revelled in the sensory journey and I was eager to do it all over again! As well as a sauna there’s a herbal infusion room, aromatherapy room and crystal steam bath. Bliss! After exploring the swimming pool and outdoor hot tub, which was made even more wonderful by the sprinkling of snow Huddersfield had offered that morning, I indulged in a 55-minute bamboo massage. Using a combination of rolling and kneading techniques, the bamboo massage stretches and elongates the muscles, while the end of the cane is used to push pressure points. I came away feeling relaxed but also with the affirmation that my tensions had been released. I also felt hungry! Luckily, Titanic Spa’s Bistro more than exceeded my expectations. The menu had a good variety of wholesome yet nourishing, locally sourced food. I particularly enjoyed my chicken and rocket salad, with roasted hazelnut crumb and stilton, generously drizzled with blue cheese dressing. Bar 1911 is also a must. The drink’s menu was fantastic and I really enjoyed finishing off the night with a sweet cocktail. If you’re wondering about choosing a day spa or an overnight break, do treat yourself with the latter. The apartments offer so much more than your average hotel room! Mine was split over two levels and had a staircase leading to the bedroom. It also had a balcony area with beautiful countryside views. I came away feeling on top of the world.
