Alternatively, on one of Swinton’s five lakes sits a wooded isle with a private hexagonal stone summerhouse. Reached by a hand-operated cable ferry, it’s a wonderfully romantic setting with pastel-coloured interiors, sash windows and an open fire. It’s also just a short walk from the riverside and museum gardens, which provide the perfect backdrop for wedding photographs. Originally built in 1906 as the headquarters for the North Eastern Railway, the imposing exterior is composed of red brick and Huddlestone stone with intricate detailing and a stone-arch entrance. Step inside and visitors find it retains its original splendour with marble detailing, high ceilings, stunning fireplaces and sweeping stone staircases. Time to celebrate! The venue has two spaces for weddings. The Grand Boardroom accommodates parties of up to 110 guests while The Chairman’s Suite is a more intimate setting for up to 30 people.
