Growing up in New Zealand, I’d always loved the outdoors and nature, so in my late teens, I travelled back to England for my OE Experience and trained in floristry. I set up and ran my own successful retail flower shop in Auckland, New Zealand, before returning to England in 2011. I have more than 20 years’ experience and have had the pleasure of raising three boys during that time. I now work from home creating beautiful flowers for couples who love attention to detail, personal service and quality results. What’s your favourite flower? It’s difficult to choose a favourite as each season has lots of wonderful options in a variety of colours and textures. I love ranunculus, it’s available throughout winter and spring, and flourishes as the petals open. Sweet peas have a wonderful fragrance and light, delicate movements that lend themselves well to floral designs. Tuberose and jasmine are other more voluptuous fragrances and just a single tuberose can smell gorgeous. Peonies are loved by brides but are only available in May and June. What do you love most about your job? It’s a huge honour and privilege to be chosen by couples. No two weddings are the same, so my job is very varied. I love the creativity and trust that brides and grooms give me to design arrangements that reflect their personalities. Which bouquet have you loved the most and why? Every posy I make is special, from the initial consultation to choosing and selecting the ingredients. One of my favourites was for my sister, who entrusted me to create a trailing bouquet that included phalaenopsis orchids and roses. Best tip for choosing your wedding flowers? Choose seasonally available flowers. Fragrance is also something to consider. There are lots of fragrant herbs available that can be incorporated into your design. Myrtle is often considered the plant of love and marriage, and since 1840 every royal bride has carried a sprig of it in her posy. Find a florist whose style you love. Choosing your big-day blooms is exciting and will bring all the elements of your wedding together. Be honest with your chosen supplier, tell them your budget and they’ll be able to advise and guide you with the most suitable choices.
