Your Sussex Wedding - Jun/Jul 2019 (Issue 79)

CAKE HEROES Following the recent liquidation of Brighton's Choccywoccydoodah a group of more than 40 professional Sussex-based cake makers have stepped up to offer their services to couples left without a big-day bake in the wake of the iconic company's demise. The group was formed a little over two years ago when Caroline Middleton of The Sugar Pumpkin got together with a handful of cake suppliers to offer mutual support, cover cake orders where needed and pass business between each other in instances where someone was already fully booked. On learning that couples had been left cake-less with, in some instances, only weeks until W-day, Calley of Calley's Cakes suggested the group step in to assist. The group are offering a discount to affected couples along with the offer to help find a cake maker amongst their number. Calley says, "The couples who have contacted us have been relieved to have a service with access to so many reputable and talented cake makers, all of whom are fully registered and insured." ICE ICE BABY Bognor Regis-based ice cream parlour and mobile ice cream catering company Pinks Vintage has been running a profitable business at the same time as generously giving back to its local community for more than 17 years. Selling ice cream to the folk of Bognor Regis, Katy became known as Mrs Whippy and grew her business catering at weddings, parties and events across the south coast. She says, “Our community are our customers. Giving back, to me, is really just a way of working together to create a successful and happy future.” The most recent opportunity to give back is to raise awareness of dementia through a yarn-bombing challenge in partnership with Dementia Support and Sage House. Pinks Vintage will launch its new ice cream parlour in Bognor Regis and encourage crafters to knit, sew or crochet bunting to create a trail from Sage House to the new location. I create something completely bespoke and special for the big day that lasts a lifetime. I draw, in fine ink, couples’ very own love story from a list of their 30 happiest memories: first dates, special places, family, pets, interests, holidays. I can also include where they were engaged, the wedding venue, church or even the first dance song. Each piece is A3 in size. They’re perfect for displaying at the arrival table or on an easel. I also offer simpler versions, including a three-part love story, illustrating met, engaged and married. Alternatively, I also offer a single-piece love story depicting the venue or church with married names and wedding date. How did the idea strike you to create a love story through art? Growing up, my mum always taught me that something homemade was a true demonstration of love. So when it came to thinking of a wedding gift for my groom, I knew I had to make something myself. As I thought about what to include, more and more happy memories came to mind until I decided to get a larger piece of paper and put all of the memories together! This was my very first Love Story Creation. What’s the best thing, for you, about working in the wedding industry? Getting to be part of the wedding magic again! Being a part of other couples’ weddings brings it all back to me. It’s such a privilege to research and draw their special moments. Each is different, and by the time I complete their love story, I feel a connection with them. I truly love that I get to be creative full time, and I pour my heart and soul into crafting something special for the most important day of someone’s life.
