Your Sussex Wedding - June/July 2024 (Issue 109)

The idea of an al fresco wedding day may fill you with joy or dread. It’s not for everyone, and definitely not for the fainthearted, thanks to the ever unpredictable British weather. But if you’ve got your heart set on tying the knot beneath blue skies, don’t be deterred. Simply do your research to arm yourself with all the knowledge you’ll need to ensure a stress-free, flawless experience. You’re in the right place, as our experts have all the answers here in our guide to planning the ultimate outdoor wedding. LEAVE NO STONE UNTURNED No doubt, there’s an awful lot to think about when planning an outdoor wedding. Nikki Ford, founder of Fiesta Fields (www.fiestafields.co.uk), an outdoor weddings and events company representing idyllic spaces across Sussex and Surrey, says, “What follows may all sound like a lot, and there’s no denying an outdoor wedding will take a bit more effort, but you’ll be rewarded with a unique day that’s totally your style.” So, where to start? Charles Hooper from stunning Sussex al fresco venue Forest Garden Shovelstrode (www.forestgarden.info) says, “Look for a location that resonates with your own vision. Consider the scenery, accessibility, and available facilities.” Next, Louise at Elessar Events (https://elessar.events), a beautiful woodland wedding venue in Chichester, says: “Visit your chosen venue well in advance to envision your setup and discuss layout options. Exploring the venue will help you understand the space and its potential.” When you do so, there’ll be plenty to ask your venue team about. Nikki continues, “When you start visiting fields, always consider the following: Is there good access for cars and larger setup vehicles, is there a nice flat area for your marquee/tipis, is there a parking area away from your marquee (cars don’t look good in photos), find out how the land will be prepared (does it need rolling or will it be mowed?), and how many events will they host per year? Some outdoor venues (not Fiesta Fields) charge commissions to your suppliers, so it’s worth asking about this up front. Don’t forget to find out about the venue’s rules, including amplified music curfews and finish time, and whether things like fireworks, firepits and animals are allowed.” Remember, the more you ask the less surprises there’ll be, which in this case is a good thing! COME RAIN OR SHINE Ah the biggest challenge and deterrent to an outdoor wedding – the Great British weather! But don’t let it put you off. Armed with these expert tips you’ll have the day of your dreams whatever the sky throws at you. “Think about the time of year your wedding will take place,” Louise says. “Each season offers its own charms and challenges, from blossoming spring flowers to autumn leaves. Plan accordingly, especially for weather contingencies like rain or wind. “Weather-proof your guests! Offer amenities such as blankets for cooler weather, fans or parasols for summer heat, and even umbrellas in case of rain. Ensuring guest comfort is key in an outdoor setting. Also, remind them about the outdoor terrain in your invitations. Suggesting suitable footwear will help everyone navigate the natural grounds comfortably and safely. ” “Finally, we encourage our wedding couples to make both wet and dry weather plans, ensuring there’s something to look forward to, regardless of the conditions. This approach ensures your special day is beautiful and enjoyable come rain or shine.” Charles too, is an advocate for contingency planning: “Always have a backup plan in case of unexpected weather changes. Rent a marquee or appropriate sized tent for cover.” © www.holliecarlinphotography.com Elessar Events © Big Bouquet Photography BLUE SKY THINKING Plan the ultimate al fresco wedding day with help from the experts OUTDOOR WEDDINGS 55
