I can’t believe that Christmas has come and gone already; it seems like only yesterday that we were welcoming 2023. I got engaged to my husband on Christmas Day during one of the many lockdowns, so the festive season holds a special place in my heart. For those of you who found a ring underneath the Christmas tree, congratulations! With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we know that many more of you will be getting engaged soon, and we can’t wait to help you plan your special day. In every issue, we highlight some of the best local venues, ask experts for their advice, and showcase the latest fashion trends. Planning your wedding can feel overwhelming, especially at the beginning, but try not to panic. Weddings aren’t one-size-fits-all, so make the day about you, your interests and your love story. For example, if you love Harry Potter, why not incorporate it into your day? After all, it’s your wedding! Having trouble getting started? I found the best thing to do when I got engaged was to make a list of everything that I’d like to include in my day. From the big things like the venue and photographer down to the smaller details such as the cake topper and jewellery. The list might be a few sentences, or five pages long(!); both are absolutely fine. The list is there so you can find which items are important to you and to help you to focus on one thing at a time. My number one piece of advice would be to focus on your venue first, as this will dictate the day and time that you’re getting married. Due to the knock-on effects of the pandemic, many venues are still getting booked years in advance, so get your dream space locked in as soon as possible and then you can start thinking about your other suppliers. LIGA creates contemporary homeware collections, including placemats and coasters, trays, tableware, kitchen textiles and furniture, perfect as pre-wedding gifts. As well as providing sustainable options for home products, the team at LIGA strongly believes in encouraging people to work together to protect the environment. The new cork recycling initiative is a simple yet powerful way to contribute to a greener future. With 30 stores currently taking part in this recycling scheme, the idea is to take spent corks from wine bottles to your nearest participating LIGA stockist, where the corks will be collected. Our relationship grew, and Nigel asked me to marry him during a family holiday to Tenerife. Instead of a traditional cake, we had cupcakes. By the end of the night, they were all gone and I didn’t even get one! We gave our guests lottery tickets and Welshcakes as favours. We had lots of English guests who didn’t know what a Welshcake was, so it made a nice talking point. West Monmouthshire Golf Club provided all of the food, which tasted amazing. We held our ceremony at St. Elli’s Church and chose West Monmouthshire Golf Club for the reception. We’d had our Christmas party at the golf club the previous year and some of our friends and family had recommended it to us. We chose white and red flowers to tie in with our colour scheme. 32
The bridesmaids chose full-length dresses from Next. During his speech, my brother presented me with a frame full of all the money he had stolen from me as a child. Nigel and the groomsmen hired their suits and we chose dicky bows for the children to wear. I purchased my dress, veil, tiara and jewellery from Perfect Day Bridal. Childhood SWEETHEARTS Hannah and Lee have been together since they were teenagers and were over the moon to finally tie the knot at Glen-Yr-Afon House Hotel Images courtesy of Andrew Hazard Photography 36
Hannah and Lee met online in 2014, when they were 16 and 17 years old. “We arranged to have our first date in Bristol,” says Hannah. “We had a long-distance relationship, as Lee was from Somerset and I lived in South Wales. Over the years, our relationship blossomed and we bought our first house together in April 2020.” Lee popped the question in 2018. “He booked a night’s stay at the Celtic Manor Resort as a birthday present and surprised me with the proposal,” shares the bride. “We were due to get married in August 2020, but due to COVID, we had to re-arrange it twice. We first rescheduled to May 2021; however, due to restrictions still in place, we decided to move it to June 2022.” SETTING THE SCENE “I’ve always loved the Glen-Yr-Afon House Hotel, as it’s where my parents had their wedding reception in 1994,” explains Hannah. “We loved the space and decided to decorate it with a white backdrop behind the top table, LED ceiling drapes, a dancefloor and chair covers with pink table runners and bows.” For their favours, the couple gave their guests shortbread biscuits in the shape of love hearts and Welsh love spoons. “These included our wedding date and initials,” recalls the bride. “My mum and I also made sweet cones filled with our favourite pink sweets. “We chose a four-tiered cake with different flavours for each tier,” adds Hannah. “The flavours were Victoria sponge, chocolate, white chocolate and raspberry, and lemon sponge. I wanted to add a hint of Cinderella and so our cake maker, Tiers & Tiaras, piped a carriage with our initials on it. We also had ivory lace on one tier and pink sparkle on the other, with pink and ivory roses on top.” The happy couple incorporated their pink colour scheme into their table plan and place names. “We also added the colours to our flowers, which were pink and white roses,” says Hannah. “We finished the look with candles on the tables and green foliage.” For their transport, the couple hired a campervan for the bridesmaids and mother-of-the-bride and a traditional car for Hannah and her dad. DRESSED TO IMPRESS “I wore a Paul Zeni dress called Amelia,” shares Hannah. “It was a button-back, A-line gown with lace detailing on the top and back of the dress. I’d seen it online and fell in love with it. I tried a few different dresses and styles first and the bridal stylist kept my gown until last and I fell in love with it right away. I accessorised with a tiara, earrings by Jon Richard and a pear and diamond bracelet, which matched the design of the dress. My shoes were from Rainbow Club and I bought sparkly trainers for the evening, ready for dancing.” Lee chose a navy suit from Dyfed Menswear. “He matched with the ushers, best men, father-of-the-bride and pageboys,” remembers the bride. “They accessorised with navy waistcoats and pink ties that matched the bridesmaids’ dresses. I had two bridesmaids and a flowergirl. The flowergirl wore an ivory dress with a satin pink belt from Monsoon and the bridesmaids chose pink multi-way dresses.” TIME TO CELEBRATE “We had magician Jason Thomas entertain our guests after the wedding breakfast,” explains Hannah. “This was a big hit with our friends and family, who were amazed by him. We also hired Darren Ganterton from Glen-Yr-Afon House Hotel as our DJ. He was great and included all of our musical choices. Lee and I additionally hired a photo booth from Memory Makers Photo Booth, which was good fun and was popular with everyone. This was particularly nice, as they created an album of 37 REAL WEDDINGS
