After being shut up indoors during the pandemic, there’s a growing appreciation for open spaces, fresh air, and all that nature has to offer. Demand for chilled al fresco weddings continues to rise and shows no sign of stopping any time soon. Luckily, we’re blessed in South Wales with everything from a beautiful coast and countryside to magical woods, forests, and more, so the world’s your oyster. There’s a lot to take into consideration when planning an outdoor wedding, from electricity to shelter and toilets. If you’re planning a ceremony in the height of summer, will your guests be squinting the whole time? Will there be shelter for any older or vulnerable guests? Likewise, if you’re thinking of having an autumnal wedding, then will your loved ones get cold? These are all key considerations when choosing the setting for your ceremony. Ask your venue for their suggestions on how to keep everyone happy; they’re the experts after all. Once the service is finished and your friends and family are happily mingling in your venue’s grounds, it’s worth thinking about catering. Is there an indoor space where your caterer can cook the food, or do they have an outdoor setup that might work? If the latter, then do they need electricity? If so, how will your venue supplier this? Moving onto the evening, you might want a band or DJ to perform under the stars, but what will happen if the weather turns unpleasant? Always have a backup plan in case the weather takes a turn for the worse – it’s the UK after all! To help give you some ideas, we’ve rounded up local experts and asked for their tips for creating a memorable outdoor celebration. Happy planning! DREAMY SUPPLIERS The Welsh National Wedding Awards, now in its 14th year, shine a light on the incredible Welsh wedding industry, with categories ranging from best bridal retailer and best venue to best florist. Throughout the summer, thousands of votes were cast by brides, grooms, and their families, taking time out of their busy lives to say thank you to those suppliers that helped make their dream day extra special. More than 500 shortlisted businesses from every region of Wales attended the Welsh National Wedding Awards ceremony on Sunday 10th November at Swansea’s iconic Brangwyn Hall. The event was opened by award founder Jessica Rice before handing over proceedings to Welsh broadcaster and mental health activist Matt Johnson. Founder Jess Rice told us: “Having hosted The Welsh National Wedding Awards for 14 years, we are passionate about shining a light on the industry, recognising and celebrating suppliers from every corner of Wales, many of whom work incredibly long hours, passionately providing incredible services for a day that will be one of the most special in a couple’s lives together.” Discover more at www.welshnationalweddingawards.co.uk AWARD-WINNING VENUE Craig Y Nos Castle has won the Nation’s Wedding Award for ‘Wedding Venue of the Year’. It’s an evocative soft brown that inspires cacao, chocolate and coffee – perfect for weddings. Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, says: “Underpinned by our desire for everyday pleasures, Mocha Mousse expresses a level of thoughtful indulgence. Sophisticated and lush, yet at the same time an unpretentious classic, it extends our perceptions of the browns from being humble and grounded to embrace aspirational and luxe, presenting a discrete and tasteful touch of glamour.” In celebration of the 26th anniversary of Pantone Color of the Year, Pantone will also for the first time highlight the colour in events and experiences all over the world. From New York and London to Shanghai and Mumbai, Pantone will be sharing public spaces and colour events that will make Pantone Color of Year 2025 accessible for all. GOING GREEN Sustainability has been at the core of chef Chris Harrod’s ethos since he launched his award-winning restaurant, The Whitebrook, in 2013, securing a Michelin star within 11 months. This is just one of six restaurants to be awarded a Green Michelin Star for 2024, becoming the only restaurant in Wales to hold both a Michelin and Green Michelin star. Working closely with artisan growers and producers, foraging local hedgerows, estuaries and woodlands; cultivating his much-loved kitchen garden and orchard; and careful consideration for the environment at every step of the way have always been a top priority for Chris, who runs The Whitebrook with his wife, Kirsty, with the help of Kirsty’s mother. This commitment is made possible by the property’s surroundings in the Wye Valley, a blissfully peaceful location that allows the family to offer a gastronomic break where you can switch off and recharge. Head over to www.thewhitebrook.co.uk for more information. CONGRATULATIONS! The Good Hotel Guide has revealed its annual list of César winners. Kath and Dan chose a navy and green colour scheme for their wedding at Ridgeway Golf Course Images courtesy of RAM Photography & Film HEART SKIP A BEAT Kath and Dan met through St John Ambulance Cymru. “Dan was my daughter’s cadet officer and when he found out that I was a member years ago, he encouraged me to come back as a parent helper, which I did,” says Kath. “One year my son had the honour of carrying the St John Ambulance Badger standard in a Remembrance Parade. As a proud mam, I put the photo on social media, saying, ‘Proud mam seeing my boy carrying this flag this morning’. Dan saw the post and quickly sent me a private message saying, ‘It’s called a standard,’ and that’s how our friendship somehow started. The thing that attracted us to each other was how similar we both are; we enjoy a bit of banter and we just bounce off each other. We constantly laugh and joke!” Kath was in complete shock when Dan popped the question. “Our happy place is at Penarth Barrage, where we spend a lot of time together,” shares the bride. “There is a boat there that does day trips around the bay called ‘The Princess Katherine,’ and Dan always said that the boat is named after me, as I am his princess. After a day of Christmas shopping in Cardiff, Dan drove to the barrage, and we went for our usual walk. Dan stopped in our favourite spot and said, ‘Look over there; Princess Katherine is approaching’. As the boat came closer, Dan put his arm around me with the ring in his hand and said, “Will you marry me and become my queen?” It was absolutely perfect; the sun was setting, and we were looking out over the bay when our boat approached. I was so surprised that I just stood there staring at the ring, thinking, is this actually happening? I did eventually give him my answer.” Read on to see some of Kath’s favourite moments from their big day... You make my REAL WEDDINGS 25
From the minute we viewed Ridgeway Golf Course, we knew it was our venue. Bill, the owner, was so open and honest with us and even told us not to jump straight in and go look at other venues, which we did, but nothing came close to Ridgeway Golf Course. It was the ideal size for us, with a separate ceremony room to the reception marquee. Everything was included in the price, including cars, a magic mirror, decorations, a sweet cart, a DJ, a three-course wedding breakfast and much more. We honestly thought that the price was way too good to be true and there must be a catch somewhere, but there wasn’t. As a student nurse during the time of planning the wedding and only qualifying two months before, booking Ridgeway Golf Course literally took all the stress out of planning as they did everything for us. Our cake was designed by Dan and created by Temptation Cakes. It was a four-tier creation with a half-and-half design. The front was green with navy flowers and the back had the St John Ambulance Cymru logos on it. The top tier was the badger logo, as I am a badger officer; the second tier was the cadet logo, as Dan is a deputy cadet officer; the third tier had the Adult St John Treharris logo; and the bottom tier had the message that Dan sent me that got us talking. It was put on a rotating cake stand, so it constantly rotated all day until it was cut. Our flowers were green and navy and we also incorporated the green into our favour bags. For our wedding favours, we wanted to remember the people who are no longer with us, so we decided to make donations and buy trolley tokens from charities that our loved ones died from or have affected our families. We initially wanted everything in the colour Kelly green as this was the closest colour we could find to our St John Ambulance Cymru uniform. Unfortunately, getting everything in that shade of green proved to be a nightmare; that’s where we brought the navy in. The men had navy tailcoats, the bridesmaids were dressed in navy and we brought the Kelly green into the table name cards. 26
My dress was bought from All About Eve Bridal in Newport. Dan actually chose my gown and had no idea until the wedding day. I had a week off university and booked in loads of different appointments, but by the end of the week I couldn’t find anything that I liked and was feeling really disheartened. I had one more appointment booked in at All About Eve Bridal and I was so fed up that I invited Dan to come along. We got to All About Eve Bridal, and the girls there were amazing at reassuring me. I started pulling dresses out to try on and Dan kept quiet until one caught his eye. He asked me to try it on, and although I wasn’t keen, I agreed. After trying on three of the dresses I chose and didn’t like, it came time to try on Dan’s choice. With the curtain pulled around me, I slipped into the dress and tears instantly filled my eyes and I had the ‘it’s the one’ moment. I had to stop the tears from flowing down my face and pretend to Dan and his sister that I didn’t like the dress. I had to tell them that I was getting a different dress and managed to keep it quiet from Dan for two years. On the wedding day, his face was a picture when I walked down the aisle and he realised. I guess he does know me better than I know myself. We played a game of Mr & Mrs at the start of the evening, which caused a lot of laughter. We then danced the night away with a disco. The groomsmen wore navy Italian tailcoats with matching ties. Our guests are still talking about Dan and the best man’s dance, which was not prepared beforehand. It had the marquee erupting in laughter. Dan arranging to have the WW1 vintage ambulance present at the wedding. It is owned by a member of St John’s and it made the perfect photo opportunity and was a massive talking point with our guests. For our honeymoon, we went to Malta for four days. We chose Malta to keep in with the theme of a St John Ambulance wedding. Malta was where St John originated from and we had to visit the St John Cathedral while we were out there. It was a fantastic honeymoon and such a beautiful place to visit. REAL WEDDINGS 27

Step into spring Aisling and Liam had a fun filled celebration at Tall John’s House Images courtesy of Jacob Boodrie Photography 30
Aisling and Liam met during their first week at dance school. “Liam was in his first year of the course and I was doing the foundation year,” says Aisling. “We met at a house party and were friends for about eight months before starting a relationship.” Liam popped the question at home after the couple had been together just over 10 years. “It was a huge surprise,” shares the bride. “I’d been away for the weekend and then went straight to work, but when I got home I found Liam had decorated our flat with candles, lights, rose petals and Polaroids of us throughout our relationship. I looked at all of them, and when I got to the last one, he kneeled down behind me with a ring.” SETTING THE SCENE “It was important to us that we found a venue that felt warm and welcoming and that we could create a day that felt true to how we are as a couple,” reveals Aisling. “We really liked how beautiful Tall John’s House was and that we had complete freedom to decorate it however we liked. “My sister, Greta, handmade all of the napkins for the wedding breakfast; they had green around the edges so that they’d match the green table runners,” adds Aisling. “She also made around 1,000 paper cranes, which we scattered on the tables and surfaces in the barn and hung from the ceiling. The cranes acted as a bonus wedding favour as lots of our guests loved them and asked to take one home. We also borrowed some handmade bunting that my friend Esther had made to decorate the courtyard area where we had our drinks reception after the ceremony.” The couple’s flowers were seasonal blooms from Love Lily Floral Design Studio in Abergavenny. “We chose my bouquet, three bridesmaids’ versions, six buttonholes and some flowers for the bridesmaids’ hair,” says the bride. “We also had some fresh blooms placed in empty gin bottles for the centerpieces. The flowers were all a mixture of lovely pinks, blues and purples.” The couple made their table plan using a chalk pen and an antique mirror. “We loved the mirror so much that it now hangs in our living room,” explains Aisling. “For our table names, we struggled to find anything that felt significant, so we ended up using a random word generator and then enjoyed hearing the guests theories for why we chose those table names.” For favours, Aisling and Liam gave their guests bespoke Sicilian chocolates from Khione in Cardiff. “Our cake was from Let Them See Cake in Cardiff,” recalls the bride. “It was two tiers; the bottom was lemon and blueberry, and the top tier was the best chocolate fudge cake I’ve ever had in my life! Sugarloaf Catering provided the rest of our food. I’m vegetarian, so we had a good mix of options. We had canapés after the ceremony, followed by a two-course wedding breakfast with either crème brûlée or tiramisu for pudding. Crème brûlée is Liam’s favourite dessert and tiramisu is mine, so it was important to us that we had both options available for everyone. Sugarloaf Catering also made hot dogs for our evening reception. The team was incredible and I’d highly recommend them.” DRESSED TO IMPRESS “I wore a Teresa Atelier dress that I purchased from Cardiff Bridal Centre,” says Aisling. “I was anxious about finding a dress to start with. I tried on so many different options and had such a positive experience. I chose my dress because I just loved all the details on it; the neckline felt super flattering; I loved all the buttons down the back and along the train and the slit in the skirt. My mum’s friend Sharon very kindly made my earrings and a necklace that were absolutely stunning. She’d also added in a little blue bead to the necklace clasp as my something blue. I had my greatgrandma’s engagement ring as my something old, and my friend Emily let me borrow the headpiece that she wore for her wedding as my something borrowed. I also wore a veil that had little sparkles and pearls on it, as well as white heels. The bridesmaids and I had our hair and make-up done by Jess Mac, who was absolutely incredible; she made us all feel beautiful 31 REAL WEDDINGS
