Welcome to our April/May issue! I love this time of year partly because I adore spring weddings but also because of the new wedding dress collections. This issue is one of my favourites to write and I always get excited seeing the stunning gowns that are available in our lovely region. I got married a few years ago, so I know how stressful finding the perfect dress can be. I had no idea what style I wanted, but my wonderful consultant helped me pick my dream A-line gown. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the amount of choice available, make sure you listen to your consultant. They have years of experience and have helped brides of every shape and size find their dream gown, so they will know what looks good on you even if you don’t yourself. Go to your appointment with a rough idea of what you like, but try to keep an open mind. On paper, it might not be what you want, but it might still be the one. If you’re not sure where to start, check out our fashion section for heaps of inspiration. Happy planning! The business stopped producing favours in 2020, when the first national lockdown wrought havoc on the UK’s wedding industry. Available in either heart-shaped or traditional pieces, the favours are presented in a variety of attractive boxes and tins. Invented in 1854 by Victorian cook Sarah Nelson, the company will be celebrating its 170th anniversary this year. “We had so many calls and emails from couples requesting them for their big day that we felt obliged to reintroduce them,” explained Joanne Hunter, co-director of Grasmere Gingerbread. “As we are in the heart of the Lake District, which is regularly voted one of the UK’s most romantic destinations, we always intended to re-introduce Grasmere Gingerbread wedding favours. So I’m thrilled that we are once again working with excited couples as they plan their big day. We have lots of exciting celebratory events planned, so it seemed like the perfect year to bring back our wedding favours.” To find out more, visit www.grasmeregingerbread.co.uk www.mcgowanweddings.co.uk LOCAL NEWS 9
PLANNING SOS Wedding hair stylist Gareth Lambert and award-winning make-up artist Polly Winder have joined forces to launch The Love District Wedding Podcast, which aims to educate and entertain brides and grooms-to-be. With a combined 1,500 weddings under their belts, these two know how to calm an anxious bride and distract a fussy mother-in-law. Gareth explains why they are doing it: “On wedding mornings, Polly and I are always asked about funny stories, things that can go wrong and any tips to help them through the day, and as we love to chat, we thought, why not share this with everyone?” Polly adds: “The aim of the podcast is to have fun and share all our advice that we’ve picked up over our combined 35-year experience at weddings. Believe me, we have seen and heard it all.” The first series of The Love District Wedding Podcast has four entertaining episodes and focuses on wedding planning and morning disaster stories. Listen to it here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/thelove-district-wedding-podcast/id1709786302 AWARD-WINNING VENUE Skitby, a wedding barn surrounded by acres of Cumbrian countryside, has been named a winner at the annual Hitched Wedding Awards 2024. The property received a total of 11 five-star reviews, left by married couples in the past year, on their online storefront on Hitched’s website. It’s no wonder Skitby has won, as it boasts impressive views of the Lake District, a contemporary interior, well-manicured gardens and an outdoor seating area. If that wasn’t enough, the venue is also exclusive use, meaning you will have the property to yourself for your big day. Visit www.skitby.co.uk for more information. The farm was established in 2018 and grows cut flowers for homes, businesses and weddings near Cockermouth in West Cumbria. Using oldschool market garden methods, the team grows flowers and foliage from March until October. The company has a growing reputation for sustainable floristry, designing without floral foam and imported flowers that celebrate the seasons. Its relaxed ‘country garden’ florals have proved very popular with couples marrying in the Lakes, flowering between 40 and 50 weddings a year. The Sustainable Wedding Alliance was set up in 2020 by Michelle Miles to help the wedding industry reach the country’s ambition to be net zero by 2030. The process of accreditation supports businesses in understanding their current carbon footprint and creating a sustainability strategy that helps them become more environmentally friendly. Harriet Smithson, the owner of Cumberland Flower Farm, tells us: “We are delighted to have achieved accreditation with the Sustainable Wedding Alliance. It is brilliant to be able to celebrate our work and have a practical plan for our growth and development. The accreditation process has taken us a year and has involved us analysing our carbon footprint, supply chain and processes. It’s very thorough and thought-provoking! It’s easy to say you are ‘eco’ but this really underlines the effort we make to consider the environment. Sustainability is at the heart of what we do and to be the first business in Cumbria to be accredited is a great achievement. We encourage others to join and start the process!” For more information, visit www.cumberlandflowerfarm.co.uk. Amy and Chris incorporated their love of sage green into their wedding day at Charnock Farm Images courtesy of The Soulcase Wedding Photography RUSTIC Amy and Chris met at work and started talking after they were introduced by Amy’s boss. “We became friends and the rest is history,” says Amy. “We have three children between us and in 2020, they said: ‘Will you marry our dad?’ with my mum’s engagement ring in hand. It was a complete shock and the most perfect proposal, as the kids were included. My mum sadly passed away in 2018 from cancer, so it means a lot to me that he used her ring.” Read on to see some of Amy’s favourite moments from their big day... romance 25 REAL WEDDINGS
Our food was supplied by Charnock Farm. We chose canapes, a three-course meal and a hot buffet in the evening. I created signs that we placed around the venue and Bliss Events by Katie provided a post box, a crisp wall, a doughnut wall, a photo booth and a flower arch. For our favours, we gave our guests cookies from Bish Bosh Bake with their names stamped into the icing; these also doubled up as place names. Charnock Farm is a stone’s throw away from where we live and we love the rustic barn feel. We often visit the farm in the summer, so the kids can have ice cream and feed the animals. It has a lot of happy memories for us and we loved the idea of getting married there. Nathan from Charnock Farm was absolutely amazing! He was there throughout the whole event to make sure it ran smoothly. Our cake was made by a family friend. It was a tiered design with flowers around the sides. All of the décor was created by Bliss Events by Katie. She completely understood what I wanted in terms of colour and style and she did an absolutely amazing job. 26
We had a lovely lady called Chelsie Jade sing at our wedding. She sang while the guests arrived, throughout the ceremony and for two hours during the reception. After the wedding breakfast, I booked a singing waiter as a surprise for Chris and our guests, which was a huge hit! I bought my Maggie Sottero dress from Brides at Charnock Farm. I accessorised with a blush fingertip-length veil and a necklace and earrings that Chris bought for me. Chris and the groomsmen wore suits from John Francis in Bolton. After the wedding, we didn’t have a honeymoon as such. We went on a lovely family holiday to Egypt and made some amazing memories, with camel rides, a boat trip and quad biking in the desert. I had four bridesmaids, who all wore sage green floor-length dresses that we purchased from Next. My flowergirl wore a pink dress from Next and had a flower wand. My dad’s speech was amazing. I was worried he was going to go on for too long, but it was perfect. In the evening, we had a magic mirror photo booth and the resident DJ performed, who was absolutely fantastic. 27 REAL WEDDINGS

At one WITH NATURE Rosie and Michael opted for a English garden theme for their big day at Low Hall the Lakes Images courtesy of Joe Mather Photography 30
Rosie and Michael met, like most modern couples, online. “We were attracted to each other’s sense of adventure and love of the outdoors,” says Rosie. “Michael almost missed out though, as he cancelled our first date at short notice because he’d found a lost dog while out on the fells and, in the process of reuniting the dog with his owner, managed to get sunstroke. It was only because my mum persuaded me to give him another chance that I agreed to reschedule!” Michael proposed on Hopegill Head. “It’s one of our favourite skylines and the view from the top looks down on the venue where we wanted to get married,” shares the bride. “He’d planned it for a beautiful November day, but the bad weather suddenly set in, and by the time we’d had breakfast, it was a full blizzard. We set off in the snow and had a slow, cold and windy climb to the top, where he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. It was a complete whiteout; we couldn’t see the view and the dog’s whiskers were frozen, but it was magical nonetheless.” SETTING THE SCENE “We loved Low Hall the Lakes from the beginning and knew it was the perfect venue for our day, and although we flirted with the idea of other venues, we knew it was the one for us,” explains Rosie. “Ben and Francesca made us feel completely at ease; we could have our ceremony looking up at where we got engaged and we loved the overall vibe. It felt perfectly us. “I love flowers and grow lots of my own, so they were always going to be really important for setting the vibe of the wedding,” adds Rosie. “For the ceremony, we wanted to create more of a natural, enhanced floral scene, so I designed a floral ground arch where Michael and I would stand to give the effect it was growing out of the ground, with similar arrangements at the end of each row of seating. We were thrilled with how it turned out. We got DIY buckets of gorgeous Cumbrian-grown flowers from Harriet at the Cumberland Flower Farm and mixed them with flowers we grew in our garden too. My mum made the bouquets on the morning of the wedding and Katie, one of my bridesmaids, made the buttonholes. We had a whole crew of amazing friends and family help us decorate the venue on the Friday and we couldn’t have done it without them.” The happy couple designed their table plan and had it printed at Mike Taylor Printing Services. “Mike was amazing and did all our printing for us,” reveals the bride. “We loved how all our stationery matched and felt modern, bold and cool. We stuck the decals to plywood, which gave it a slightly industrial vibe.” Rosie and Michael used terracotta planters as their centrepieces. “We filled them to the brim with flowers and they were perfect because they made a real impact, but they were still low so you could see who was sitting opposite you,” remembers Rosie. “We added loads of candles and colourful napkins and I was so pleased with how the tables looked.” Kelly at Wren Cake Design made the couple’s cake. “We kept the design simple and in keeping with the colours used elsewhere in the wedding,” says the bride. “The cake layers were sticky toffee pudding, limoncello, blueberry and champagne, and rhubarb and elderflower. We also had an amazing vegan cake, which was whisky, pecan, and salted caramel. 31 REAL WEDDINGS

“Iain at Bespoke Catering Cumbria created a delicious sharing feast for us based on our favourite recipes,” adds Rosie. “We had a load of Middle Eastern-inspired veggie and vegan treats for everyone to dig into. It was perfect for a summer evening. For dessert, Greg from Hardy Peddling served ice cream, which looked amazing set up outside of the barn. For evening munchies, Dhanell from Love Pizza cooked up the most delicious pizzas for everyone.” DRESSED TO IMPRESS “My mum made my two-piece outfit,” shares Rosie. “We did lots of shopping and loved lots of dresses, but none of them were the one, so my mum volunteered to make me something! I did a quick sketch in my diary and sent it to her and she made magic happen, creating my perfect outfit. It was so beautiful and she did such an incredible job. I accessorised with the gold and pearl earrings my mum wore when she married my dad 34 years ago, my granny’s diamond watch and a simple long veil with a hairclip. I bought some shoes when we first started planning, but the week before the wedding, I decided I didn’t like them with my outfit, so I ordered 100 pairs and found some that I loved in the end! In the evening, I changed into a sequin mini dress, which I customised with feathers and green velvet heels. It was the perfect dancing dress. For Michael’s look, he chose a green linen suit with a pink linen bow tie.” Rosie’s bridesmaids chose their own dresses. “I asked them to pick what they felt happiest in,” explains the bride. “Their only brief was to feel good and be colourful. They all looked beautiful.” TIME TO CELEBRATE “During the day, Alexander Hulme played the guitar and sang, while our guests sipped on customised beers from Crooked River Brewing Co Ltd and played crazy golf from The All Hire Company,” recalls Rosie. “Alexander also sang through dinner, which was such a nice addition to the atmosphere. After dinner, while we had cake, ice cream, teas, coffees and more drinks, Guy joined and played the sax while our guests milled about and chatted. In the evening, we were joined by The Jive Doctors, who played the best tunes with lots of energy and made sure the dancefloor was jumping all night long.” MEMORABLE MOMENTS “We felt the most amazing energy in the air all day,” remembers the bride. “It was wonderful being surrounded by so much love and happiness and we couldn’t stop smiling; our faces hurt for days afterwards. It couldn’t have felt like a more special day. Although a particular highlight of the day was watching from the window as the guests arrived and the sun came out, it all came together exactly how I’d imagined it! I also loved our speeches, which we did outside too. Even though it rained a bit on me during my speech, it was the best setting to do it in. Michael’s favourite bits included me walking down the aisle, the confetti and the speeches. We both absolutely loved the golden hour, where Joe, our photographer, took us into a field for pictures, and we had 10 minutes to talk to each other, laugh our heads off and take in the magic of the day. “All of our suppliers went above and beyond to make our day special, but Ben and Fran at Low Hall the Lakes were incredible in both the planning of the day and on the day; they really helped create such a chilled vibe,” continues Rosie. “Joe was also amazing; he caught every moment perfectly and made us both feel so comfortable. Also, we have to say thank you to JC Massonnet for curating our wine list and Matt Lindsay for rushing to pick up Michael’s parents for the ceremony when their taxi didn’t turn up!” REAL WEDDINGS 33
