For me, spring is a wonderful time of year. I love seeing nature come alive again, and being able to go outside without it being dark is something I’ve truly missed. Although I adore Christmas (who doesn’t?) I’m not a fan of the winter months and am so glad we can finally say hello to spring! With a new season comes lots of wonderful real weddings, and I can’t wait to hear from those of you who are set to tie the knot in the next few months. As many of you know, my wedding is in July 2022, so we’re finally in the home stretch and counting down the days. We opted for a summer wedding, partly due to my disdain for the cold weather, but also because when we got engaged in 2020 we were in the middle of one of the many lockdowns and were unsure if we’d be able to get married anytime soon. We booked our venue for 18 months later, and here we are about to walk down the aisle and say ‘I do’. For those of you who are newly engaged, believe me when I tell you that your day will arrive in the blink of an eye! My number one piece of advice is to take your time and enjoy the planning process. In this issue, photographers show some of their favourite images, local experts answer your hot topic questions and we reveal the latest news from around the North West. Remember, if you’ve recently celebrated your day or have been involved with a shoot, you can submit it at www.yournorthwest.wedding/get-involved-real-wedding Melissa x Melissa Bark r, Senior Editor Step into spring WIN a honeymoon in St Lucia! All the latest from around the North West A PIECE OF HISTORY Rydal Mount can now be booked by couples wanting to tie the knot in the house or garden where William Wordsworth spent most of his life. Wedding guests will have access to the dining room and the drawing room where Wordsworth is thought to have penned his world-famous poem, Daffodils. There is also space on the two lawns in the beautiful gardens for marquees. The house, between Ambleside and Grasmere, is on a hillside with views over Windermere and Rydal Water and the surrounding fells. A focus on romantic literature, it was Wordsworth’s family home from 1813 until his death in 1850 at the age of 80. Couples will have the option to have a tree planted in Wordsworth’s garden or even a permanent seat in their name. And to mark their first anniversary, couples will be able to book a private dining experience at the house. Wedding manager Annabel Candler said: “Having a wedding in a historic place such as this adds the couple’s beautiful story to the romance of the past. This is a very special venue indeed. Rydal Mount continues to be owned by the Wordsworth family and retains the feel of a lived-in family home.” For details about Rydal Mount, visit www.rydalmount.co.uk PLANNED TO PERFECTION Planner and venue manager Weddings by Annabel has been selected as a finalist for the Guides for Brides Customer Service Award. Annabel said: “After a testing couple of years where I became more of a wedding coach and counsellor than a planner, this is a wonderful achievement even if I don’t get further. My business is growing and developing into something that I’m truly proud of. The nasty pandemic helped me delve down the venue management path, and now I have three glorious places to look after in Cumbria. My private clients are more like friends, and I have taken on help for 2022. Exciting times ahead!” Annabel has also established a non-wedding part of her business, Creativise Events, which caters for street events, private parties and such. “I have been involved with many a wonderful event over the years but having weddings in my title confused a lot of people,” says Annabel. “Creativise will focus on making events engaging, interactive and entertaining.” Visit www.weddingsbyannabel.co.uk and www.creativiseevents.co.uk for more. NEW AND IMPROVED The Alchemist is returning to its roots with an extensive refurbishment of its flagship Manchester venue, The Alchemist Spinningfields. Set to re-open in March, the refined refurbishment will be a significant evolution in design for The Alchemist. The cosmic-inspired renovation of the all-day dining and cocktail space will include the addition of two new private areas that will be perfect for late-night cocktails or hen and stag dos. Simon Potts, the CEO, said: “The Alchemist footprint has spread across the UK over the last few years, as we’ve taken our hospitality brand down to London and up to Scotland, but we’ve always remained a Manchester company at heart. The Spinningfields venue is an institution and much loved by our teams and guests alike; we look forward to bringing our new design direction to the city. The refurbishment also marks a new phase of growth for the business as we put the recent challenges behind us and look forward to the renewed evolution and expansion of the brand.” Check out www.thealchemist.uk.com for more information. We’ve teamed up with Tiffany LS Photography to offer one lucky reader a pre-wedding photo shoot worth an amazing £100. We spoke to Tiffany to find out more about her company: “I’m a natural light photographer. My style is candid, capturing moments as naturally as possible, showing raw emotion and highlighting the beauty in the surrounding environment. I love documenting special, once-in-a-lifetime moments. And what could be more beautiful than an engagement or wedding? I have a relaxed, flexible approach to shooting weddings. I hope to put clients at ease, making the experience as enjoyable as possible. I don’t enjoy being in front of the camera myself, and so empathise completely with couples that are a little shy or feel slightly awkward having their photo taken! “I’m extremely grateful to my wonderfully supportive client base. They have enabled my business to grow beyond what I had hoped for in such a short space of time. I have built a solid reputation, with many of my clients coming to me through word of mouth. I have been nominated for several awards, and thank all my wonderful couples that have voted for me. I am fortunate enough to have had my work chosen to be on the cover of two issues of Your North West Wedding and the front of the Lancashire Post. To see my work published means so much. CLASSIC elegance Heather and Dave tied the knot at The Gibbon Bridge Hotel with a blush and navy theme Images courtesy of Marina Walker Photo Heather and Dave met through a mutual friend. “We liked similar things and hit it off right away,” says Heather. “Dave proposed one December. He had put a selection of rings on hold at a jeweller and took me to see them the day after. It was a complete surprise.” Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day... We chose to tie the knot at The Gibbon Bridge Hotel, which was perfect. We got married 22 years after our first date. For our favours, we gave our guests lottery cards and Cancer Research pins. Champagne Cakes in Preston provided our cake. Dave and I chose a navy and pink theme with lots of candles and floral arrangements everywhere. Our beautiful flowers were from Buds and Bloom. I chose an Anna Sorrano gown and accessorised it with a Bolero jacket and jewellery from Peacock & May. 30
Dave wore a stylish suit from Cosgroves. To keep our guests entertained, we had a pianist perform during the meal. We felt so happy and truly blessed. Everything was special, and we couldn’t fault a thing. The bridesmaids and flowergirls opted for navy dresses. A funny moment was how slow the flowergirls walked down the aisle. Everyone really enjoyed the day. We had a small wedding with close family and special friends. REAL WEDDINGS 31

IT ALL IN Drink Sara and Luke celebrated their wedding with a wine theme at Broadoaks Country House Images courtesy of AJ Photography 34
Sara and Luke met in 2012 on Twitter. “Following our online friendship, we started writing letters to each other, and one day, we decided to meet up,” says Sara. “We didn’t live near each other, so we never thought anything of our relationship other than a friendship. However, once we met, we were inseparable, and Luke asked me to be his girlfriend. From 2012 until 2018, we had a longdistance relationship whilst we completed our studies. We would travel by train to see each other, spending our weekends and school holidays together. Once we started our careers, we moved in with my parents while we saved for our house, which we bought in 2019. Over the years, we have grown together as a couple and become a team. A lot has changed in the past 10 years, but our friendship and love for each other has been consistent and grown stronger.” Luke proposed in April 2020. “It was a spontaneous moment,” shares the bride. “He said that he had been thinking about it for a while, and one day he just went for it. He proposed during the first national lockdown at home. We were in bed, and he just randomly asked me. I was shocked, and it was a complete surprise! We had a Zoom party that evening with our family, and we shared the news with them and celebrated virtually. Because of COVID-19, we were reluctant to start wedding plans, however, in May 2021, we started the search and booked our wedding for later in the year.” SETTING THE SCENE “The Lake District has always been Luke’s favourite place to visit,” explains Sara. “We wanted a venue where we could celebrate with our closest family and friends. We came across Broadoaks Country House and saw that we could hire the space exclusively. We travelled up to Cumbria to visit and booked it immediately after the viewing. It was the only place we saw, and we instantly fell in love with it. It has a private and intimate atmosphere, and they were able to accommodate the whole wedding party overnight, which was important to us.” Sara and Luke made their favours which doubled up as place names. “I filled small mason jars with chocolates and stuck personalised vinyl stickers on them,” recalls the bride. “We handtied ribbon to each one to tie in with our colour scheme.” “We wanted a more casual seating arrangement and weren’t keen on a top table, so we decided to have a U-shaped table, which meant we could see everyone and chat throughout the wedding breakfast,” adds Sara. “For the centrepieces, we had a mixture of candles and lanterns. I added lantern toppers which I made from greenery and red berries.” Moss and Bloom provided the couple’s flowers. “I wanted something which I could keep and was sustainable,” reveals the bride. “They used a mixture of dried and faux blooms, and to create a rustic look, we incorporated cabernet colours.” The happy couple chose a semi-naked cake with gold leaf printing and flowers from Love At First Bite by Amber. DRESSED TO IMPRESS “I wore a Stella York gown called 7169 from Burr Bridal,” says Sara. REAL WEDDINGS 35
“I didn’t have a clue what I would wear, and I didn’t think I’d go for an actual wedding dress, but when I tried it on, it felt perfect. I’d convinced Luke I was wearing a red dress, and one of the first things he said to me at the aisle was ‘that’s a funny red dress’, which made us both smile.” Luke opted for a tweed waistcoat and blazer from Slater Menswear, a knitted wine-coloured bow tie and Dr Martens. The bridesmaids chose maxi dresses with a heavy lace bodice and high neckline from JJ’s House. TIME TO CELEBRATE “We had a jukebox in the evening from Timewarp Jukeboxes,” shares the bride. “It was a real centrepiece, and our guests loved selecting their favourite songs. We also hired tipi tents from The Enchanted Tent Company that were set up for the children so they could relax in their own space.” MEMORABLE MOMENTS “On the day of the wedding, I was super excited and the happiest I’ve ever felt in my entire life,” explains Sara. “I’d had a lot of nerves in the run-up to the wedding, and by the time it arrived, I felt so ready. Luke was incredibly nervous in the morning, and his best man recalls that he didn’t talk for the whole car journey. We relished the service, exchanging our vows and making lifelong promises to each other. After the ceremony, everything felt so surreal. We couldn’t believe that we were once teenagers dating, and now we’re a married couple ready for the rest of our lives together.” Sara’s father nearly didn’t make the wedding ceremony. “He was caught in traffic from road works,” recalls the bride. “Storm Arwen had caused lots of issues for us over that weekend. The whole morning, I was completely unaware that he almost didn’t make it. I went down for my pre-ceremony interview with the registrar, and my dad walked through the door with five minutes to spare. It wasn’t until he arrived that I realised he was so late!” “One of the funniest things from our wedding day was hearing what our five-year-old nephew said to our photographer,” adds Sara. “While taking photos of our guests, our cheeky nephew said: ‘uncle Luke’s camera is bigger than yours!’ Luke had taken up wildlife photography the year before and invested in some large lenses for that particular type of photography.” The lovebirds had support from their suppliers. “Our wedding coordinator, Mel from Broadoaks Country House, was truly amazing,” reveals the bride. “The night before the wedding, she had a last-minute meeting with me to run through the day to ease my nerves. Our photographer, Adam from AJ Photography, was fantastic from start to finish. He was great at settling our nerves, and he transported the rings from the bridal suite to the best man, ready for the ceremony. We felt comfortable and relaxed around him, and everyone made lovely comments about his professionalism.” HONEYMOON “After the wedding, we’d booked to stay in Edenborough for a few nights as a minimoon,” says Sara. “We had one lovely night there and then realised we missed being in the Lake District, so we cancelled our plans and returned to Cumbria. We wanted a more chilled experience rather than a busy city. We had a lovely few days, walking, eating out in country pubs and relaxing.” 36
