Your North East Wedding - January/February 2024 (Issue 60)

MEET SARAH-JANE SMITH FROM INFINITY CAKES 07873 854 314 | www.infinitycakes.co.uk Q – Tell us about your background – how did you become a cake maker? I originally trained as a chef and I naturally gravitated towards the sweeter side. My nephew was born not long after and that’s when I started making cakes, initially for him and then for friends and family. I left the catering trade but still enjoyed making cakes and everyone always said I should do it professionally. After I got married, I decided to take the plunge and set up my own business making cakes. Since then, I’ve evolved and grown as a cake maker and decorator. Q – What should couples expect when booking your services? I hope to provide a bespoke and fully customisable service to help couples create the wedding cake that they want. This includes one-on-one consultations not just during the working day but at weekends and in the evenings too. Q – What’s your favourite wedding cake that you’ve made and why? This is a really difficult question, as there are a few that I have loved making, but I’ve chosen a ‘hidden panel’ design with a Marvel theme (pictured), as not only did I get the chance to make a more traditional wedding cake on one side, but you see the clients love of Marvel on the other side. I had so much fun making the little Groot figure for the top. Q – How long before the wedding should couples book? I would always advise you to book as soon as you can with your chosen supplier, as the date you want could always be booked, potentially years in advance. So once you have your venue confirmed, start looking and booking as soon as possible. I allow couples to change the design up to four weeks before the date of the wedding, just in case they change their minds! Q – What’s your favourite part of the job? I love making the additional decorations for the cake, like flowers, models and figures. I think for a lot of cakes, it’s these additional details that give them the extra umph or wow factor. Q – Do you have any top tips for couples looking for a cake maker? Look for a local cake maker (local to you or your venue if you are not getting married close to where you live). Make sure to try the cake; you want to enjoy eating it after! Ensure your cake maker understands what you want designwise and gets a copy of the design. Check reviews and previous cakes they have made and I would always expect the cake maker to deliver and set up the cake at your chosen venue. 45 CAKES
