MEET CLAIRE HUNT FROM CLAIRE’S CLASSY CAKE SHOP 07856 594 970 | www.clairesclassycakeshop.co.uk Q – Tell us about your background – how did you become a cake maker? I used to make birthday cakes for my children and I went on to make them for family and friends. I wasn’t happy with the job I was doing, so I decided to set up a business and I have never looked back. Q – What should couples expect when booking your services? Couples should expect a top-quality cake from me, excellent customer service that provides advice, all the information they need and the peace of mind that they can get in touch at any time to discuss their cake and if any changes need to be made, this can be done. Q – What’s your favourite wedding cake that you’ve made and why? My favourite cake is the pink and white one pictured. I love the height, the colours and the different elements of each tier. This was a challenge at the time and I love a good challenge. Q – How long before the wedding should couples book? I have had a couple book two months in advance, but to 100 per cent guarantee availability, I’d say one year before the wedding. Q – What’s your favourite part of the job? My favourite part of the job is creating the cake couples have dreamed of. I love the reaction I get from them when they see their cake; it’s such an amazing feeling. Q – Do you have any top tips for couples looking for a cake maker? When looking for a cake maker, make sure you do your research, look at the work that they’ve done, check reviews and make sure you feel 100 per cent comfortable with the company that you have chosen. MEET GRAEME VENUS FROM STICKY SPONGE 01912 677 600 | www.stickysponge.co.uk Q – Tell us about your background – how did you become a cake maker? My wife had been making cakes for some time and had created several for our family. She was making a cake for my dad and suggested I have a go at some decorations for the top. I started to make small sugar models of a lawnmower and tiny gnomes to make it like a garden for him. We made a few more cakes for friends and family and everything grew from there. We have been awarded the DMA International Edible Sculptor of the Year, along with many other awards. Q – What should couples expect when booking your services? We can make just about any cake with any theme. I usually have an initial consultation to take down all factors of what the couple would like, then pull everything together into a design that flows and reflects the couple, their day and their theme. We also offer samples at the consultation, so the couple gets to taste the cake and plan flavours. Q – What’s your favourite wedding cake that you’ve made and why? It’s always nice to get unusual cakes that I can input creativity into. I have a couple of favourites. My Hobbitinspired wedding cake (pictured) was made for a couple up at Alnwick Treehouse. The cake fitted the venue and theme beautifully. Another of my favourites was a Mario Kart-inspired wedding cake (pictured). It had so many elements and details involved that the couple had requested. I loved the way I could theme the cake, going from the dark depths of Bowser’s Castle up to the sky and Rainbow Road. Q – How long before the wedding should couples book? I would say book as soon as possible. I am a one-man team, so if dates are already booked, I usually can’t make anything else on that day. As a result, the popular dates usually go first. Last year, I did have a few lastminute availabilities due to the effects of the pandemic and the cost of living, so it’s always best to check. Q – What’s your favourite part of the job? Seeing the look on people’s faces when they get their delivery. It gives a great sense of achievement and it’s good to know all the hard work is appreciated. Q – Do you have any top tips for couples looking for a cake maker? Find a cake maker who has the skills to make what you would like. I hear so many horror stories of people feeling disappointed with getting an inferior cake not finished to a high standard. 44
