Candid, documentary or storyteller all mean that the photographer’s going to capture your day as it happens. Think real moments and emotions, without trying to influence photographs by asking people to do this or that. The only posed or staged moments of the day are likely to be group photos, plus some portraits of the bride and groom. This is mostly standard practice, so you can expect this from most of the photographers you meet. Some of the terms you might come across regarding style are cinematic, dark and moody; light and airy; or true to colour. Cinematic, dark and moody are similar, in that they are meant to be dramatic – think pictures characterised by rich, deep colours and dark shadows. Light and airy is the very opposite, and tends to be bright, light photos with soft, pastel colours. True to colour, meanwhile, is somewhere in the middle, and uses more of an accurate representation of the colours in an image as they appear in real life. Recently I’ve seen a big change in what couples want for their wedding cake, regularly receiving requests for rich chocolate fudge cake, lemon sponge and Cherry Bakewell flavours. Couples that approach me love getting a taster box of what I offer, customising the flavour and filling combinations in a way that suits them to make their cake that bit more personal. Clients often don’t know where to begin with ordering a cake – or the questions to ask – so I always point out that the sky is the limit, and not to feel tied to traditional flavours and designs. The minimalistic appearance is still popular, with lots of preference for a ‘semi naked’ or plain white icing, accompanied with flowers from local florists.
