78 COLOUR POPS Our local make-up artist share their advice on finding the right colours and tones for your complexion, from your foundation and eye make-up to lipstick IT’ S ALL ABOUT THE BASE Throughout the year our complexion may change and so may our requirements. When buying a new foundation there are many factors to consider, shade is just one of them. Some other things to consider are; the finish of the product, do you prefer a velvety matte, illuminated or a more natural finish? Formula is also important, do you prefer a liquid, powder or cream? Coverage is also something to consider, this is the amount of pigment and how much of your skin shows through – think of it like the amount of Denier in tights! It’s best to match this to your needs, for a flawless complexion opt for a sheer coverage, if your skin needs more help opt for full coverage. I love a buildable coverage so I can adjust to my complexion needs. The skincare benefits of the product is also important, modern foundation can actually help your skin but it’s important to match your needs, oil control, anti ageing, hydrating etc. Getting the shade right is of course essential, foundation products should ideally look like your skin only better, their purpose is to even out complexion and not to change your colour. If it’s too light you will look pale and unwell, too dark and you’ll struggle to blend at the jawline and hairline and look orange! To find the right shade trial a few in natural daylight. Apply direct to your skin from the nose down across the cheek to the jawline; if it appears seamless and matches in with your skin it’s the right depth of shade. Did you know your complexion has different tones which should also be considered? Some are warm having a more of an olive base, some more cool with pink undertones and some are neutral. I find most ladies with pink tones actually like to colour correct this by using a neutral base. In summary, decide on your requirements; finish, coverage, skincare needs and formula preference. Don’t forget to update regularly, your colour changes summer to winter and there’s always something new to try. It’s important to remember that you want to be able to look back at your photos over the years to come and be happy with your choice: I advise staying in the comfort zone of natural bridal make-up. Colours and tones for the different skin tones. ❤ Fair skin  If your natural skin tone is light then you would suit a soft pink, tawny and beige. Be sure to stay away from frosty finishes and reddish orange colours as they can make you look washed out. ❤ Colours for a medium skin tone If you’re too dark to be fair or light but your skin does not fall into the olive category you’re considered to have a medium skin tone. Cool undertones call for a rosy colour, while warm ones demand apricots or peach. For your eyes, bronze or honey is beautiful, medium lip ones can carry off virtually any colour. ❤ Colours for tan skin  If your skin has that sunny glow, don’t overload your face with make-up, just work with the amazing glow you already have. For people with tanned skin a bit of bronzer can even out and warm the look – natural and gold colours are very flattering. Finishing with a bright lipstick can enhance that natural glow and sun kissed skin. Keep clear of oranges! ❤ Colours for deep and dark skin tones  Women with darker skin tones tend to have uneven skin tones that is light towards centre of the face yet dark towards hairline. You can combat this by using two different colours that matches your skin tone and another that is a little darker. Again keep with some nice soft browns and subtle gold tones for the eyes.  Working with your make-up artist they will be able to advise you best and work with you to achieve your desired look. I always ask my brides to show me a photo of their make-up or come with make-up on so I can see how much or little they are used to wearing day to day. Laura Timms | www.lauratimms.co.uk LIP SERVICE We all know that the right lipstick can transform your look instantly, finding the right shade however, can feel like a minefield! The truth is that all shades are wearable for everyone, it’s the ‘tone’ of your skin and in turn that of your lipstick that determines whether the shade is the right fit for you.  Knowing the tone of your complexion really is essential information, getting this wrong will significantly affect how flattering the shade is. So you need to identify your skin tone. As a quick guide, warm undertones tend to look good wearing gold, whereas cool undertones are more suited to silver. Those lucky enough to be blessed with a neutral undertone look great either way.  From here it’s quite simple, if you are warm-toned look for warm lipstick shades with golden, orange, or terracotta undertones. If you are cool toned, look for cool lipstick shades with blue or pink undertones.  For an everyday look you can also apply this rule: Stay one or two shades up, or down, from your natural lip colour – this trick will always ensure tailor-made perfection.
