HOT TOPIC Local experts offer stellar advice on wedding dilemmas SETTING THE SCENE We’ve just become engaged and are looking for the perfect wedding setting. How do I know if a venue is right for our day? We know that planning your big day may seem daunting, and all the fine details matter. At The Zetter, we understand the importance of choosing a wedding venue; below, we have some key points to assist you in making that big decision. When you visit the venue, don’t be shy—ask all the questions that pop into your head! Tune into how the space makes you feel, and take note of the staff. Did they make you feel welcome and confident in their abilities? Look at testimonials and photos from past weddings to get a feel for the vibe. If you dream of an outdoor wedding, ask about their backup plan for unexpected weather. Also, find out about their preferred suppliers, whether you’re required to use them, and if they suit your style. Lastly, think about how the venue will look in your chosen season and ensure it fits comfortably within your budget, including any extras or hidden costs that may arise! Remember, a wedding venue is an incredibly personal decision; what suits one couple may not suit another, so go with what you feel is right to encapsulate your special occasion. Cecily Reeves-Jones | The Zetter | www.thezetter.com WINTER WINDS We’re planning a winter wedding next year; what advice can you share to help with the planning process? Instead of battling with the English weather over summer, it’s time we all stop overlooking winter weddings. Whether you love Christmas or consider yourself a Grinch, there’s something quite special about getting married at a festive time of year. It shouldn’t be overlooked if you’re into the cosy, rich and warm vibes. Knowing that you won’t be outside opens many more doors for venues. From cosy vintage pubs to grand private homes with multiple fireplaces or even styled event venues, there are so many more reliable options at this time of year. Everyone is in a good mood and enjoying the festivities, which makes it the perfect time to get married. Plus, you’ll probably find that certain suppliers offer a reduced rate. Many venues offer very different prices for a Saturday in December to a Saturday in August. However, one thing to be careful of is limited supplier availability over the dates closest to Christmas. Florists, for example, find it much harder to get stock due to markets being closed. Another point to watch out for is sunset times for your photos. If you want any pics outside, ensure you factor in the time to get outside while it’s still light! Styling this time of year is super simple as so much works. You can lean into Christmas and have a red and green colour palette with touches of gold and luxurious fabrics such as velvet ribbons. Or if that feels like too much, there’s nothing better than a sophisticated and classy black-tie event. Keeping the colours neutral, like champagnes, soft blush and a contrasting black, will never go out of fashion. One piece of advice, if you want to get married at Christmas, is to get your invites out early. It’s a common time of year for people to make plans with their families, work Christmas dos, and of course the annual trips to Winter Wonderland. Get the date in people’s diaries early to ensure you have everyone you love with you on the day. One of my favourite weddings we’ve ever planned was on a cold crisp December day. We served mulled wine and hot chocolate, kept the décor clean and crisp, and everyone danced until the wee hours - it was perfect!
