57 23 Dance the night away in these stunning strappy styles! Having close friends and family gathered for their special day was everything for these lovebirds. The Greenhouses promises an unforgettable setting to create cherished memories with tailored upgrades and services to ensure extraordinary experiences. With spring approaching, we’re excited to embrace this beautiful season and see what couples have up their sleeves. The weather can be unpredictable, so it’s always essential to devise a wet-weather plan to relax, knowing you’ve covered all your bases in the run-up to your wedding − especially for those opting for al fresco celebrations. The seasonal availability of flowers offers an excellent choice for the time of year; think daffodils, tulips, hyacinth, crocus and lily of the valley. It’s an excellent opportunity to embrace a colourful and bold colour scheme using nature’s palette. Who doesn’t like an abundunce of flowers, from bouquets to gorgeous table arrangements and ceiling installations? Remember, you can move your florals throughout the day to ensure a picture-perfect backdrop for the vows, wedding breakfast and reception while staying on budget. Floral arches are my personal favourite! Expect Pantone’s Colour of The Year, Peach Fuzz, to grace the wedding industry. The compassionate and nurturing soft peach shade conveying heartfelt kindness will surely become a huge movement we’re so excited to see. Another popular trend making a statement is champagne towers that add a touch of fun to weddings while serving guests a glass of bubbly. If you’re at the start of your planning journey, you’ve come to the right place because we cover everything from fashion, beauty, cakes, venues and more. When searching for a property for your nuptials, I advise seeing if any of your shortlisted are hosting wedding shows, as spring is a popular time for these events. It allows you to look around the spaces, meet local suppliers, discuss your big day and ask plenty of questions. For those creeping closer to your special day, we have plenty of last-minute tips and tricks to ensure a stress-free wedding and the perfect finishing touches for that extra wow factor. So, no matter where you’re at with wedding planning, there’s something for everyone. That’s all from me; happy planning! THE BRUNEL MUSEUM event@thebrunelmuseum.com https://thebrunelmuseum.com The Brunel Museum allows couples to get married on the site of the first tunnel built underwater anywhere in the world! Exposed concrete, original brick walls, various artworks and cultural exhibitions lend distinctive character to the Grand Entrance Hall and The Engine Room. It’s the ideal venue for ceremonies with 90 seated guests or 120 standing, wedding breakfasts with 85 and receptions with 120. The underwater Tunnel Shaft has been reimagined as The Grand Entrance Hall and is entered via an elegant staircase. The Thames Tunnel once provided a pedestrian crossing of the River Thames nearly two miles downstream of London Bridge. Following the tunnel transformation to construct the East London Line and London Overground, the shaft has now been sealed with a concrete floor. The shaft is approximately 50ft in diameter and 50ft deep, with smoke-blackened brick walls from steam trains, providing a raw but atmospheric backdrop. The breathtaking grand space has beautiful acoustics that will transform celebrations into unforgettable celebrations. The Rooftop Garden sits on top of the Brunel Tunnel Grand Entrance Hall, it’s included for all-day events and is ideal for welcome drinks. Later in the evening, gather around the centralised firepit to keep cosy with s’mores toasting kits. The Midnight Apothecary is the team’s exclusive drinks partner. The beautiful bar serves seasonal cocktails using ingredients from the garden itself. THE RITZY CINEMA & CAFE 02073 262 649 www.picturehouses.com/cinema/the-ritzy The Ritzy Cinema & Cafe is situated directly opposite Lambeth Town Hall in the heart of Brixton. It’s well connected with Brixton Tube Station, a three-minute walk away, overground links to Victoria Station and numerous bus lines in all directions. The exterior holds a strong early 19th-century design, with grand arching, silhouettes and embossed detailing. The interior documents The Ritzy’s history, combining details reminiscent of the cinema’s opening alongside its more modern elements from when it fused with what was once a theatre before the war. The venue has settings catering to couples’ needs, from the grand 350-seater screen to an intimate setting that can host 52 guests. Screen 1 was once the cinema’s only screen and visually stays true to The Ritzy’s history when it opened more than 100 years ago; it can host up to 250 loved ones. Screen 2 (for 160 people) and Screen 3 (111) allow for a traditional aisle walk with parted seating. For something more intimate but just as special, the wonderful Screen 4 (109) and Screen 5 (51) can showcase couples’ love stories on the big screen, or slideshow of fondest memories together, to add an element of wonder to events. AROUND Love is all Claire and Dave’s autumnal wedding featured sage, peach and red tones Images courtesy of Isabelle Elliott Photography 26
These lovebirds met on the dancefloor at Fabric nightclub in the summer of 2018. Claire was with some girlfriends who weren’t enjoying the music, unlike her, which is when Dave caught her eye. She comments, “He smiled at me, and we got chatting. We’re both ravers, and we’ve been to many of the same events without meeting before. It was one of those serendipitous moments you never thought would happen to you. Dave gave me some of his best chats: as a teenager, he was a Team GB gymnast, and his bathroom had underfloor heating! He asked me to go for a drink with him later that week. I said ‘yes’ and we’ve been inseparable ever since. “Dave proposed on my birthday weekend at The Tawny, a stunning dog-friendly hotel in Staffordshire. In recent years, Dave’s taken me away for my birthday weekend to somewhere as a surprise, usually to a B&B. When we arrived and I saw the hotel, I thought it was a bit much for a 31st birthday. It turns out, he had a surprise up his sleeve and proposed in our lovely, secluded shepherd’s hut when we got back from dinner.” SETTING THE SCENE When it came to wedding planning, the couple’s goal was to have a Londonbased wedding, as that’s where they’ve spent their entire relationship together and the city means the most to them. Most importantly, they wanted to have a big party for all their loved ones to enjoy. When looking for the perfect setting. the couple only went to see one wedding venue − Clapton Country Club. Thanks to the unique style, they decided then and there that it was the perfect location for their big day. Formerly a Victorian tram depot, which didn’t require much styling, the pair loved the exposed brick walls and the giant disco ball in the reception hall, which was a perfect touch considering they met on the dancefloor. What better way to arrive at a city wedding than a black London cab? Rightly so, and one took the bride and her best girls to the venue! When it came to the florals, the couple was guided by Hackney-based florist Charlotte at My Posy Neighbour. The supplier chose some beautiful British seasonal flowers with lots of autumnal colours. Charlotte created a gorgeous flower arrangement for the ceiling orb in the reception room that looked beautiful. The lovebirds have a local spot for cakes, Mama Mae’s on Roman Road, where Dave got Claire’s 30th birthday cake; everyone had commented that it was terrific so, it was only fitting they stuck to what they knew best! They opted for a three-tier semi-naked cake decorated with eucalyptus, foliage and fresh berries. LOOKING THE PART Claire went to three different bridal stores but fell in love with Australian designer Prea James’ beautiful silk satin gowns at Fall Bride in Dalston. She chose a top and skirt style called Tyler, which she accessorised with a cathedral-length two-tier tulle veil by another Australian designer, Harriette Gordon. The bride says, “The veil was quite extravagant, but my dress design was pretty simple, so I felt they worked well together. Also, when else will you get to wear a cathedral-length veil again? I wore a necklace my aunt bought me for a birthday, which I only wear on special occasions. In the black cab on the way over, my mum asked me if I had something blue or borrowed, which I didn’t. So, she lent me my late grandmother’s blue sapphire engagement ring for the day. It was so lovely to have a part of my nana there with me. “One of the main concerns I had when trying on dresses was whether I’d be comfortable, and I was apprehensive about wearing heels all day. I rarely wear heels since I fell down the steps in Liquid Colchester, in stilettos, back when I was about 18 and couldn’t walk properly for a week! I researched heeled trainers, but none were as high as the heels I’d bought for the big day. I didn’t want to be tripping over my gown on the dancefloor in trainers, but I also knew if I wore my heels all day, it would limit how long I was on the dancefloor. While scrolling through the designer’s Instagram, I came across photographs of a bride who had also chosen the same gown as me but had a shortened version of it for the evening. I messaged her, and it turned out she’d bought a skirt from a high street store in Australia that, to the naked eye, looked like the same material as the designer’s and had it altered. So, I did the same and changed into a skirt paired with some chunky but comfortable trainers for the evening. The plan worked, and I 27 REAL WEDDINGS

spent almost all night on the dancefloor. “We did most of the getting ready at Tribu Salon near where we live in east London. Glen, who owns the salon, has been my trusted hairdresser for the past four years and opened up early so the bridal party could get ready there. When I arrived, our fabulous make-up artist was finishing my mum as my mother-in-law, Jeanine, had her hair pinned up. We nipped back to my flat to finish my make-up, have a cheeky glass of fizz and get dressed. It was such a whirlwind with everyone arriving, but I remember feeling great when I had my gown and veil on, with full hair and makeup. We had a few minutes before leaving for the venue and took some photos outside with our greyhound, Dolly, who was very confused by everything but loved all the extra attention she got.” Dave wore a charcoal grey two-piece suit with a dusty sage, silvery floral tie and a sage pocket square. He likes simplicity regarding suits, and he looked very sharp! His groomsmen all wore the same to match. Claire let the bridesmaids decide what dresses to wear because she wanted them to feel great on the day too. They opted for pillar-box red gowns, which they both looked stunning in. The bride found a navy-blue suit with a blue and red floral tie for her bridesman and a silk pocket to match the bridesmaids’ dresses. Dave’s niece was the world’s most adorable flowergirl in a cream and sage green dress with a sash bow. The couple’s greyhound, Dolly, joined the pair for a few photos after the ceremony and wore a white floral collar. TIME TO CELEBRATE The post-wedding breakfast music was really important to the couple. So, they had a live band called Festival Heart who they’d seen perform at a friends’ wedding. Claire comments, “At that wedding, we really thought they were the best wedding band we had seen. When we fixed our date and it was an easy decision and we booked them as soon as they said they’re available! Why spend ages searching for something different when you already know a great band already? As it turns out, they were incredible again and had the whole floor moving. They played Fleetwood Mac Everywhere for the first dance. They had a dual male/female singer, both with amazing voices, which gives them quite a unique energy. As any good wedding band should, their set list covered all the bases to keep everyone happy, while making sure all the songs were bangers.” Later in the evening Jimmy Hickmott of Festival Wedding DJs play for around two hours. Since the couple are ravers at heart, they had the supplier play a set of ‘90s and ‘00s classics to keep everyone on the floor. They got to pick a long list of our favourite songs, and everyone was dancing until midnight to Ibiza classics. Claire says, “My mum requesting and dancing to Praise You by Fat Boy Slim was a brilliant memory I will take from the day. Jimmy closed with Belfast by Orbital, which was the song I came down the aisle to and it was nice to go full circle.” MEMORABLE MOMENTS The couple both had that nervous excitement on the days leading up to the wedding. Dave is generally very relaxed and not overly emotional, but when he first saw Claire appear at the end of the aisle, he suddenly felt this big wave of emotion he hadn’t expected. The bride says, “The most surprising thing for both of us was that the ceremony was our favourite part of the day. Previously, we thought it was a formality we had to get through before enjoying the party. But we had an incredible registrar − shout out to Andy Seaman from Hackney Council − who immediately put us at ease and set the tone for the day. Andy gave me the best advice: to walk down the aisle slowly and take it all in because it’s a moment you won’t get again. I was pretty apprehensive about walking down the aisle. I was worried about being the centre of attention and the possibility of tripping in front of all my nearest and dearest. But as it turned out, it was the most wonderful moment as I saw everyone I love, and Dave looking at me at the end of the aisle beaming. My lovely dad stopped me from walking too quickly and was holding onto me so I would never fall. “We had some memorable speeches. My dad and the best men REAL WEDDINGS 29
