Your London Wedding - September/October 2020 (Issue 73)

A HITCH IN TIME Since opening in 1935, the Lansdowne Club has played an important part in shaping Mayfair’s social scene. Famous for its great atmosphere, delicious food and beautiful interiors, it’s also hosted many unforgettable weddings – but the last one held there was definitely one of the most unusual ones. Preparations were underway for a wedding in March, with room layouts, menus and timings all being fine-tuned for the day. But the news of coronavirus set alarm bells ringing. The guest list became smaller as people couldn’t attend from overseas, but the venue was determined to make the wedding as special as possible for the bride and groom. Final adjustments were being made when the prime minister made the announcement that from midnight the country would be in lockdown. The nearlyweds and the staff at the venue were devastated, but then a call came through from Westminster Registrars and the couple arranged to move their wedding to 8pm that night – just before the lockdown began. Two hours later, the pair tied the knot in the beautiful Adam Room at the Lansdowne Club, witnessed by just two members of staff, and beginning lockdown as a married couple. It goes to show that true love can’t be stopped – not even by a pandemic!
