S erendipity certainly played its part in Basak and Tomas’ history. “We met 10 years ago, volunteering for a refugee charity while at university. Over the years, we kept bumping into each other and, five years ago, we bumped into each other for good,” Basak reveals. However, the proposal wasn’t left to fate. “We came to the decision together over a lengthy discussion, which is how we decide to do most things,” Tomas laughs. Islington was the natural choice for their nuptials; it’s where Basak grew up but the search for a reception venue proved more problematic. “Initially, we booked another venue close to the town hall but we discovered it had a very strict decibel limit. We were planning on having lots of fun with plenty of loud music and even louder family members (hi mama!),” Tomas explains. Luckily it didn’t take the couple long to find an alternative. “Hackney Showroom told us we could make as much noise as we liked and could have the place until 2am,” Basak adds. And while we’re on the subject of loud music, the couple agreed it was 55  REAL WEDDINGS
