After baking her first cake in 1992 for her mum’s birthday she decided to enrol in cake decorating classes at a local evening school. Iced Images opened its doors in 1996, as a hobby business in partnership with two of Karen’s classmates, and 16 years on she was able to go it alone as a full-time venture. Now, providing amazing customer service she specialises in wedding cakes and adores getting to know her couples while collaborating with them. TREND PREDICTIONS Karen says: “Many couples are still asking for naked and semi-naked cakes thanks to their simplicity and rustic feel. Meanwhile, buttercream bakes are also extremely popular, especially when decorated with fresh or dried flowers. Watercolour and marbling designs feature in many a couple’s vision for their sweet centrepiece and I’m receiving a lot of requests for sunflowers.“ KAREN’S TOP TIP “Think seriously about the size of your cake, don’t be pushed into having one that’s far bigger than you’ll need. It isn’t necessary to have a slice of cake for every one of your guests as some won’t have any. You’ll have looked after and fed your loved ones throughout the day, and especially if there’s an evening buffet, some will already be comfortably full or simply don’t have a sweet tooth. Find a cake maker you love, set a realistic budget and stick to it. They’ll be happy to work with you to achieve your goals.” NICOLA PETERS, SUCH FUN CAKES www.suchfuncakes.co.uk Baking has been a passion for Bexley-based Nicola for as long as she can remember. Encouraged by her family and friends she set about gaining various qualifications and eight years on, the rest is history. Creating delicious and delightful flavour combinations has taken years of practice and it fills her with profound joy when clients “ooh and ahh” over the taste of her bakes. TREND PREDICTIONS Nicola says: “The point of being creative with the design of your wedding is to set your own trends – individuality is what sets you apart. My passion is flowers. I love their imperfections and in nature you rarely find two identical. That’s why I view them as a metaphor for marriage: we learn to accept each other’s imperfections and live side by side. You do have to know what you’re doing when decorating a cake with fresh blooms though as some can be poisonous. So, I love to craft flowers from edible paste and my work has earned me a reputation for exactness. It’s hard to believe they’re not real!“ NICOLA’S TOP TIP “Don’t forget to arrange a cake tasting and take advice on the number of tiers required, although at the end of the day it’s up to you how large your cake is. The design should complement your venue, flowers and style. My advice would be to follow your heart, be an individual and have courage in your convictions.” www.tonb ridgephotoshop.co.uk https ghweddingphotography.co.uk 64
