Your Kent Wedding - May/June 2020 (Issue 90)
A MATCH MADE IN MEAD Kent winery, Mereworth Wines, has launched Marourde Spritz and Rosé Spritz, set to be the perfect match for the contemporary wedding. Dubbed “the world’s oldest new drink,” Marourde Spritz is medium-dry and bursts with citrus and honey flavours, complemented by woody undertones, with a bright, crisp finish. By popular demand, the newly perfected Marourde Rosé Spritz explodes with honied hedgerow black fruits, with the delicate infusions of elderflower and elderberry lingering on the palate. One of the most common associations with honey wine is its union with weddings, and as the first ever alcoholic beverage, it has a history dating back 9,000 years. The original drink of the wedding toast, it’s been supped to bring assurances of good luck and happiness to newlyweds for generations. Blessed with such a rich heritage, the team at Mereworth Wines have ignited their passion for fermentation and wine-making techniques, setting out to rejuvenate this old drink for a very modern occasion. Previously a business journalist, she has been creating luxury wedding cakes in buttercream since 2012. At the time the norm was rustic and plain creations, dressed with fresh flowers, which came as an alternative to the sugarpaste-covered fondant weddings cakes that dominated the market. Emma succeeded in driving the trend forward using piping, painting and sculpting techniques to elevate her bakes to luxury, decorative and flamboyant creations. She says, “Buttercream is hugely versatile and can be manipulated into lavish, realistic or abstract floral designs, which are full of character. My own recipe Italian meringue version of this particular frosting tastes nothing like the super-sweet version found in the supermarket. It’s delicate and can be flavoured successfully with extract.” Adapting to the current situation, Emma is currently offering video consultations.
