Robert was studying there, and Kathryn, originally from Florida, was spending an overseas semester there. Two months later, she flew back to the U.S., but they both knew what they had was special, so the pair embarked on a long-distance romance for the next three-and-a-half years. They chatted every day and were able to visit each other twice a year. Kathryn, bless her, inadvertently ruined the proposal surprise as she walked in on Robert’s Skype call to her father, who was being asked for his daughter’s hand at the time. By the time Robert returned to her side, it was pointless holding the secret in any longer, so he dropped to one knee and popped the question there and then, in front of Law & Order: SVU!
