FLOWERS 79  CATHERINE ELWORTHY, ELWORTHY FLOWERS Buttonholes are getting less traditional, so rather than a single large flower, more couples are choosing collections of small alternatives mixed with berries, seed heads, feathers and even Lego pieces! As an alternative to jewellery, flowers create a soft romantic look. Wear them along the top of a veil, threaded through a plait or in a cluster on one side. If you want to make a statement for your evening reception, swap the look by wearing a blousy flower crown. Bridesmaids and mothers can add to their outfits by wearing corsages on jackets, wrists, handbags or dress straps. SHANE MAPLE, MAPLES FLOWERS Wearing blooms is very popular, either wired or glued to hair clips. Gypsophila and foliage crowns are perfect for a boho bride. Your bridesmaids could carry a bouquet during the day and then wear a wrist corsage in the evening so the blooms are still part of the look but they don’t have to hold them all evening, and your flowergirls will feel like princesses with floral wands. For the buttonholes we always use more than the one flower and we make the groom’s slightly different so he stands out. KIMBERLEY HOLLINSHEAD, THE FLOWER BOUTIQUE Hair flowers are a beautiful addition for a bride. Lots of brides are opting for no veil, but instead something stunning as a more modern alternative. For a boho-chic look, think giant, oversized flowers such as avalanche roses, peonies and dahlias and for classic elegance, think dainty spray roses, wax flower and gypsophila. HELEN SAVVA, BURGEON FLORAL DESIGN Complete your look with a stunning flower clip to include freesias and stephanotis. Stephanotis is a short-lived cut flower and should be arranged as close to the time needed as possible. Traditionally a buttonhole was worn on the left, the same side as a pocket-handkerchief. The groom and best man usually wear them but more often the fathers-of-the-bride and groom and ushers do and it’s also a nice touch to have one for the grandfathers and brothers. Wrist corsages look very stylish created from orchids and roses and finished with ribbon.
