CAKES 67  THE APPEAL… “With the rise of the sharp edge cakes, geometric designs are a natural fit to create a bold modern statement,” says Susan Halil of Cakes of Good Taste. “I love the look of a square-tiered design with alternate grey glitter tiers. It creates a very futuristic look and is perfect for couples not wanting too many floral displays in their venue,” adds Cake Angel’s Nikki Anayiotou. THE LOOK… “To keep the look elegant, these designs tend to work best as a strong statement on only part of the cake, with the rest of the cake fairly plain to set it off. Unless you’re going for an ultra modern look, flowers can be used to soften those sharp lines a little and add a touch of romance,” advises Susan. “You can also combine looks by using different shapes. Adding a hexagonal tier into a round design mixes classic with vintage style perfectly,” says Nikki. Just make sure that the position and size of the table can accommodate whatever display you choose,” says Susan. Using blooms can also help to create your theme, as Nikki explains. “It’ll bring the outdoors in, bringing your look back to nature.” THE LOOK… “Whether you go for a showstopper wreath or something more delicate, this is a beautiful way to tie the cake design in with the rest of the décor. Sugar flowers can be used, but fresh varieties are difficult to beat,” says Susan. “Blooms are also great for adding a romantic finish to an elegant yet simple design,” adds Nikki.
