There’s also Apple Cottage and Number One, both with very different styles. These spaces are suitable for wheelchair users and accessible to less mobile guests. The team also provides a Direct Access Guide with lots of information to help make stays as comfortable, easy and enjoyable as possible. The apartments have underfloor heating powered by a ground source heat pump, providing hot water for the complex. Wood fibre and Hempcore insulation have been used in the buildings, which has resulted in an energy efficiency rating of B. The buildings always had a certain degree of natural ventilation as they were used to house horses and livestock. The apartments use as much natural light as possible and add to this by using low-energy LED lighting where possible. They have implemented a Green Policy and a Responsible Visitor Charter in every cottage. This includes information on what is recyclable and how to reduce waste, water and energy consumption. They feel responsible for helping the environment and are committed as a business to being sustainable and eco-friendly – the Gold Award from the Green Tourism Business Scheme proves just that. 19 LOCAL VENUES

26 ONCE UPON A TIME Abigail and David had a fairytale wedding at Ashridge House Images courtesy of Jessy Papasavva Photography

REAL WEDDINGS 27 These lovebirds first crossed paths at school when they were 12 years old, playing on the playground. David’s mother decided to enrol him in a different school than his two older brothers. The moment David spoke to Abigail, he playfully made a flirty comment and flashed a charming smile that she couldn’t shake from her mind since that very day. They were just school friends for two years, while Abigail's friends had to endure her constant chatter about how much she fancied David. Back in May 2011, when they were both 14 years old, David asked Abigail to be his girlfriend under the trees outside of school. He then had to dash in front of everyone to catch the bus because she made him late! After school, they flirted over MSN and chatted for hours on the phone about random things, their future travels and building a life together. Two years later, when they were 16, David was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. This led to seven years of pain, numerous surgeries and countless hospital visits. They became accustomed to the 3 am A&E ambulance rides, sneaking in cuddles on the small hospital beds and finding humour in every situation they faced. Abigail comments, “Thirteen years on, our outlook remains unchanged. We consider ourselves extremely fortunate to have what we do and experienced it since we first fell in love. Our hearts have never been broken, and we’ve never had to live apart. I can’t imagine what more we could ask for.” David popped the question after seven years together, catching Abigail by surprise! The date wasn’t planned; it was simply the earliest opportunity he had after getting the ring. The stress of hiding it in the house was getting too much. After five months of collaborating with a jeweller, he crafted a one-of-a-kind ring that was truly special. The proposal took place in the stunning gardens by a waterfall at Hever Castle, the birthplace of Anne Boleyn, knowing Abigail's passion for Tudor history. SETTING THE SCENE Abigail has envisioned her wedding since she was eight years old. She diligently saved her birthday and Christmas money to make her dream a reality. She comments, “My main objective was to utilise my crafting abilities to the fullest extent possible and achieve high-quality outcomes while getting the best value for my money. I left no stone unturned in my research efforts, such as thoroughly researching every photographer in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and London as well as visiting 14 boutiques to ensure I made the best decisions possible!” The pair had their eye on Ashridge House for a couple of years. They were determined to find a venue with a special touch and when they laid eyes on the staircase for the ceremony, they couldn’t stop thinking about the property. Nothing else seemed as stunning and memorable as exchanging vows on that gorgeous staircase. The couple was determined to ensure every aspect of the wedding reflected their personalities, so they personalised the day as much as possible. They set up a TV playing a rotating black and white video montage of all the footage they had taken together over the 13 years together, which ended up being 40 minutes long! The pair decided to go for a classy look with the table plan, featuring names on a beautiful antique mirror. There was a small tribute to David’s love for Liverpool with the phrase ‘You’ll never walk alone’, and titled the table plan ‘At every table, I’ll save you a seat’ as a nod to Abigail's love for Taylor Swift. They decided to name the tables ‘1 year together’, ‘2 years together’ and so on, each with a picture from that specific year. This way, each table showcased a different stage of their relationship, creating a personalised journey for guests to enjoy. The centrepieces were designed to match the classic white theme with delicate blue accents, giving a nod to the Cinderella style.

28 They placed beautiful flowers in bud vases and small gold Cinderella carriages with a light blue cushion and wax roses underneath the stunning flowers. To add a touch of nature, the pair adorned the venue's staircase with faux foliage for the ceremony and LED Flickering candles. For the drinks reception, the pair created a ‘mini museum’ showcasing tokens collected over the years since they were 14, including tickets, currency from holidays, notes from mini golf scorecards and more displayed in gold glass cases. Additionally, there were foam light-up tubes for the evening, a grand light-up sign, LED white flooring and a games room equipped with air hockey, a photo booth, a pinball machine and giant Connect 4. Ashridge House catered for the event, offering a delicious threecourse meal featuring amazing bao buns and vegan curry for the evening buffet. The pair assembled a brownie and doughnut tower with vegan options, using brownies from the Hertford Cake Co and Krispy Kreme doughnuts! LOOKING THE PART The gown Abigail wore on her wedding day was called Athena, which was fitting considering her deep love for Greek mythology and Athena being her favourite Greek goddess. She comments, "I stumbled upon the name when I purchased it, and little did I know how perfect it would be! I bought it from Inna Voronova Bridal in St Albans, an incredible wedding dress boutique. After visiting 14 other shops without finding the perfect princess dress I had in mind, Inna assured me that I could customise the dress to my heart’s content as she handles all alterations in the store - I was truly amazed by her expertise! “I had dreamed of wearing a grand princess ballgown dress ever since I was a little girl, and I was determined to make that dream a reality. I was certain that if I settled for something simpler, I would regret it. To achieve the perfect look, I opted for a voluminous underskirt with hoops that made the dress puff out beautifully, yet it remained surprisingly lightweight without needing extra fabric. Inna even added removable sleeves so I could dance freely during the evening celebration.” “I wore topaz and diamond earrings and a necklace purchased specially for the wedding, making them my special for years to come. Later, I switched into a feathered short dress with sequin for the evening, a fabulous find on Vinted originally from ASOS.” The couple picked out perfume for each other before the big day to be reminded of each other and now wear it for special dates together. David chose Tiffany Rose for this bride, while Abigail chose Bleu De Chanel. The bride had her hair done by a fabulous hairdresser, whom she cannot thank enough for dealing with her insanely thick hair and getting it into an updo! Abigail did her make-up after looking at hours and hours of tutorials and practising over the year. “I was so happy that it all came together; it’s the most beautiful I’ve ever seen myself, and I can’t believe it was pulled off for the day”, she comments. “I honestly felt like a million dollars! My hairstylist truly exceeded my expectations. Whenever I needed something, she was right there to help. Whether it was passing me scissors, finding my veil, or reminding me about my engagement ring, she was always one step ahead. She was the person I didn’t even realise I needed on my wedding day – I will always be thankful for her.” The groom sported a tailcoat and a light blue tie to coordinate with the colour scheme. The couple was browsing Pinterest for a fantastic outfit and drew inspiration from David Beckham at the royal wedding! The grey waistcoat, black suit and shiny shoes completed the look. To coordinate, the bridesmaids were dressed in three shades of blue, all in satin. The bride’s two sisters wore the lightest shade, while the other girls chose dresses that flattered their heights and figures. Abigail wanted hints of blue throughout the wedding without it being too overpowering,
