All the latest from both regions THE OLD BELL HOTEL IN WILTSHIRE VOTED BEST IN THE UK The Old Bell in Malmesbury has been named the Best Hotel/Inn in the Muddy Stilettos National Awards 2023. With more than 77,000 businesses considered throughout the awards, this is an incredible accolade for the hotel and furthers its mission of firmly placing Wiltshire on the map as one of the UK’s greatest destinations for staycations and dining. The Muddy Stilettos Awards are renowned for celebrating the ‘best of the best’, with readers all over the country voting for their favourite businesses within 28 counties, with only those winners making it through to the prestigious national finals. Having won their regional final, The Old Bell Hotel was then chosen by an expert editorial team as the national winner of the Best Hotel/ Inn category, solidifying the hotel as one of the UK’s most idyllic and sought-after getaway spots - a quintessential Cotswolds bolthole. Set in the picturesque borough of Malmesbury in Wiltshire, The Old Bell Hotel first opened its doors more than 800 years ago, in 1220. These days however, expect to be delighted by its spectacularly unique and stylish interiors following its top-to-toe refurbishment in 2021 by its owners Kim Hanks and her husband, renowned antiques dealer and collector, Whit Hanks. The hotel boasts 34 exquisite bedrooms, each individually designed and furnished with colourful wallcoverings as well as two stunning bar concepts – the 1220 bar and the fabulous, terraced aviary-like Tyger Bar. The on-site fine dining restaurant, Abbey Row, is headed up by their ever-talented and multi-award-winning executive chef, Leigh Evans. With hyper-seasonal and local ingredients being his biggest inspiration, Leigh has the privilege of working directly with The Old Bell Hotel’s gardeners who grow much of the kitchen’s produce from their stunning kitchen garden at Abbey House Manor. Kim Hanks, owner of the The Old Bell Hotel, commented: “We are over the moon with this recent honour. The hospitality from our staff really matches what a jewel of a hotel we have in the Cotswolds.” To find out more and to book, call 01666 822 344 or visit www.oldbellhotel.co.uk NEWS Nearlywed CHELTENHAM’S IMPERIAL HAUS WIN MUDDY STILETTOS AWARD Congratulations go to Imperial Haus boutique cocktail bar in Cheltenham which recently won best National Bar at The Muddy Stilettos Awards 2023. A newly launched wedding and events venue in the heart of historic Salisbury. The Wardrobe is a secret hideaway located to the rear of the Rifleman’s Museum. It is situated in the tranquil setting of the cathedral close and the wonderful garden leads down to the banks of the river Avon. With the rolling countryside beyond, it is difficult to imagine a better location within the Salisbury city limits for any outdoor event, be it a wedding reception, celebration or garden party. The walled garden is totally enclosed and private covering over half an acre. It also has numerous specimen trees including one of the finest copper beach trees in Wiltshire. The walled garden can be privately hired for your wedding, party or event. A marquee will be positioned in the beautiful garden (your choice of style) and we can accommodate up to 150 guests. For smaller numbers a reduced sized marquee is available. The on-site caterer is the award-winning Vanilla Catering & Events. Vanilla’s key ethics are attention to customer service and the use of top quality local ingredients. These result in bright, modern food styles presented with attention to detail in an unfussy yet friendly manner. A bespoke menu is created for each client and a complimentary wedding planner is provided to run your special day. An interesting fact: did you know why we are we called The Wardrobe? The original building on the site was constructed in 1254. It was rebuilt in the 15th century and was used to store the robes of the Bishop of Salisbury; hence it was known as the “Bishop’s Wardrobe” or “The Wardrobe”! With its expansive lawn and firepits nestled amongst the wildflowers, it’s perfect for balmy long summer evenings. The exterior of West Barn Lodge and The Dutch Barn reflect the surrounding lavender and wildflowers in the grounds, providing an attractive backdrop for big-day photographs. It makes guests feel at home with its grand yet welcoming atmosphere. A sympathetic restoration of a 19th-century threshing barn with original features still intact, West Barn Lodge is a light and airy space full of character with a giant fireplace, luxury bedrooms and stone walls. The Dutch Barn has been restored similarly but with stunning refurbished additions from the farm such as trough sinks and hardwood panelling. The addition of handmade and high-end reclaimed outdoor furniture makes the venue wonderfully unique. Ceremonies take place in a variety of areas including outside on The South Terrace with seating for up to 80 guests. The terrace provides a sheltered and private space overlooking the stunning Cranbourne Chase complete with twinkling festoon lights and a courtyard fountain. Another al fresco spot is The Courtyard where couples can exchange their vows against a backdrop of the Fovant downs with space for up to 160 guests. Located in the centre of The Lodge, it offers expansive views and plenty of space and has proved to be the most popular ceremony location. The Lawn is the largest outdoor space for up to 160 people with unspoilt views of the surrounding landscape that make a stunning backdrop for any ceremony. For an indoor alternative, The Grand Hall seats up to 80 loved ones and features a 25ft vaulted ceiling providing a stunning setting for an indoor ceremony with a mezzanine for any additional guests or musical accompaniments. The Dutch Barn is the largest indoor location and is spacious enough to comfortably seat up to 160 guests with room for live musicians. Receptions take place in this newly renovated space that’s home to a unique event area with plenty of possibilities. It comes with an illuminated bar, an HD projector, a PA system, a giant glitterball, underfloor heating, toilets, and a catering kitchen. Ceremony licence? DE VERE TORTWORTH COURT, WOTTON UNDER EDGE, GLOUCESTERSHIRE As seen on screen! De Vere Tortworth Court recently featured in the hit series Ultimate Wedding Planner broadcast on BBC Two. The show saw Fred Sirieix, Sara Davies and Raj Somaiya judge eight aspiring wedding planners battling it out to see who’s got what it takes to be crowned the Ultimate Wedding Planner. In episode four, the wedding planners were tasked with planning a multi-themed wedding, one of their toughest challenges yet. The engaged couple wanted an autumnal fantasy wedding, and the team set to work utilising De Vere Tortworth Court’s Victorian Orangery as the perfect backdrop for the ceremony. On arrival, the wedding guests made their way to the Victorian Orangery, which was dressed with vibrant decorations and dried flowers, successfully meeting the brief. Whilst the guests were anticipating the bride’s arrival, a harpist played, which also welcomed the bride as she walked down the aisle. The ceremony was seamless and the icing on the cake was an owl acting as the couple’s ring bearer. Following the ceremony, guests made their way on to the terrace and enjoyed magical-themed cocktails overlooking the manicured gardens. Thanks to its ornamental glass ceiling and windows in the grand conservatory, originally built in 1874, it’s flooded with natural light and filled with lush greenery. The Orangery has an outside patio which lends itself perfectly to drinks receptions and group photos. The venue is a wedding photographer’s dream with 30 acres of parkland surrounding it and an extensive arboretum providing an ideal backdrop for those picture-perfect moments throughout the day. THE WOODS AT OAKLEY, SALISBURY, WILTSHIRE This outdoor venue is set in 12 acres of magical woodland, nestled in the heart of Wiltshire. This private corner of the countryside boasts an enchanting canopy of oak, ash and hazel trees under which couples can exchange their vows. The woods are exclusively theirs to celebrate in how they wish and the team are passionate about conservation and sustainability. All weddings held here help fund the vital canopy project which aims to carefully remove ash trees that have been affected by ash dieback and replant native British trees. Every couple is given an oak, beech or hazel tree as a wedding present from the team to commemorate their marriage and are welcomed back to visit it in the future. Why not enjoy a romantic anniversary picnic in the woods under it! Couples that choose to marry here are playing a vital role in supporting the future of the UK’s precious woodland and the wildlife it sustains. The venue even has its own pure spring water which flows into its woods, from the ancient Stonehenge aquifer. Ceremonies take place in The Hazel Bower, a charming handmade oak arbour for up to 120 guests. Loved ones sit under a stunning cathedral roof of ancient trees which protects them from the elements, plus there’s a stretch canvas which fits snuggly between the trees in the event of rain. A short stroll from The Hazel Bower is The Bluebell Glade where receptions take place for up to 120 people. Wedding parties can dine (and dance) under the stars and woodland canopy, or hire a marquee or a tipi. Hidden throughout the woods are secret spaces for couples to discover with their photographer, from romantic tree swings to meditation benches, cosy fire pits, magical fairy doors and mysterious wishing trees. Animals are welcome to be part of the celebrations, whether it be a ‘flower puppy’ or a horse carrying a member of the bridal party. There’s also a family of rescue animals who live at the venue and will happily pose for photos – Kevin the donkey in particular loves attention! There are various packages available that include exclusive use of the site, benches, umbrellas, a woodland bar, lighting and more. The team offer items available to buy and borrow to make the grounds look beautiful and they have all been sourced to have minimal impact on the environment. Ceremony licence? It’s a renovated World War II building set on the edge of the woodland that’s equipped with all mod cons – the bridal party can also enjoy getting ready here on the morning of the wedding. Guests can glamp in the canopies under the stars and many couples choose to make a long weekend of the celebrations, with breakfast hampers available on request. Beautifully located among miles of Cotswolds countryside, De Vere Cotswold Water Park creates a wedding-day backdrop like no other. Situated right on the edge of one of the 152 lakes that make up the Cotswold Water Park itself, the scenery is undoubtedly the unrivalled star of the show here. When I arrived in my room and put my bags down, flinging the balcony doors open wide and stepping out to take in the view was number one on the to-do list; even with the threatening storm clouds growing ever closer. The design of this oh-so modern hotel has clearly been intended to work seamlessly with its natural surroundings. Wood, Cotswolds stone and glass combine to create a light, airy and contemporary vibe, as well as a stylish, neutral canvas to fit in with any wedding theme. WHERE TO WED You can tie the knot here in any one of an array of stylish spaces. The Mallard Suite’s floor-to-ceiling windows offer sensational views of the lake, making this the ultimate romantic spot. Natural light floods in and you can later join your loved ones on the balcony for summer drinks or a barbecue. What’s more, uplighters and built-in heaters allow the celebrations to go on long into the evening. The Kingfisher Suite is a light and airy space too, also offering magnificent views. It’s super-popular for weddings and with direct access to the outdoor decking area, which welcomes you for barbecues and al fresco drinks, it’s easy to see why. The suite itself is so flexible, that you can split it into three sections to zone your day appropriately. It has its own private entrance and bar area, so you can feel happily cocooned as you celebrate your big day. The Starling Suite, with its dramatic full-length windows offers sensational views from the first floor of the hotel. A welcoming space for more intimate occasions, it offers access to the nearby mezzanine providing the perfect spot for welcome drinks. The Drake Suite too is best suited to intimate weddings. It easily transforms from ceremony to celebrations with a dancefloor. The Teal Room again allows you to enjoy beautiful lakeside views from its private balcony. Ideal for the “I dos,” it can be combined with one of the larger rooms for the wedding breakfast and evening do. TIME TO RELAX Following my sneak peak into the venue’s wonderful wedding spaces, I was off to Spa6 for a spot of R&R – it’s tough work you know! There are a wide range of treatments on offer here should you wish to partake, but a spell in the pool and surrounding facilities were just the ticket for me. For its size this spa contains an impressive amount of experiences. From the tranquil pool, with its various hydrotherapy options, to the sauna, steam room, thermal loungers and experience shower, there’s plenty here to rejuvenate the senses, and make you wish you didn’t have to leave. You can even book some amazing therapies such as a Rasul Ritual or Dry Flotation. DINNER DATE If we can judge the wedding breakfast you can look forward to here by the menu in The Brasserie, let me tell you, you’re in for a treat! I enjoyed a delicious starter of smoked duck breast with rocket, parmesan, and an orange and blackberry vinaigrette. Vibrant on the plate it offered the perfect blend of flavours for the palate from the rich saltiness of the meat to the sweet-tasting fruit and bitter leaves. I followed this with the incredible seared fillet of sea bass with risotto verde, and orange and fennel puree. The fish was cooked to perfection and every mouthful was sheer joy! Being cheese obsessed, I finished my meal with the continental cheese selection, beautifully served with artisan biscuits, quince jelly, celery and apricot chutney. I am most definitely sending my compliments to the chef! BEDTIME You and your loved ones are sure to enjoy a sound night’s sleep here, with many rooms taking full advantage of the breathtaking view, and some recently re-furnished in the New England style. We found our corner room, with panoramic views across two of its sides, to be a haven of tranquillity – it was easy to shut out the hustle and bustle of the hotel and enjoy a wonderful night’s sleep in comfort.
