My much-loved parents are celebrating 50 years of genuinely happy marriage this June which, in this day and age, is a remarkable achievement. Not only have they provided a happy home life for my brother and me to grow up in – and there’s not a day goes by that I’m not grateful for the carefree childhood that we had – they still provide a loving family unit for us now that we’re adults. When I watch how they love, respect and support one another, take care of each other and talk and laugh a lot, I realise that these are the key ingredients to a long and successful marriage. As a family, we’ll be celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary this June and I can’t wait. Another big celebration taking place in June is The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and plenty of our local suppliers will be taking part, including Gloucestershire-based cheesemongers Paxton & Whitfield who have launched their Jubilee Celebration Cheese Cakes. Whatever you’re planning for the extended bank holiday weekend, enjoy this historic milestone. In this issue, we have real-life couples at the start of their marital journey, who I wish all the very best plus styled shoots and venue dressing inspiration, expert advice, offers, news and more. Until the next issue, Claire x Claire Ridley, Editor Happy anniversary Cheers! The latest news from around both counties DE VERE COTSWOLD WATER PARK UNVEILS GRAND TRANSFORMATION De Vere Cotswold Water Park, part of the De Vere collection of historic mansion house estates and distinctive contemporary hotels and event destinations, has unveiled a £700,000 refurbishment to its Kingfisher and Drake event suites. Both have been refreshed to include modern amenities and the latest technologies to bring them in line with the company’s innovative Smart Space meetings concept. The new design in both suites includes exposed Cotswold stone walls and feature panelling to complement the surrounding natural landscape, bringing it in line with De Vere’s distinctly British aesthetic. The Kingfisher Suite, one of the property’s largest spaces, can host up to 370 people or it can be split into three sections to accommodate smaller groups. The suite offers 300 metres of flexible floor space that can easily be tailored to suit any event. The area also has its own entrance, ensuring privacy and exclusivity for guests. The suite offers direct access to an outdoor decking area and an indoor adjoining bar. The Kingfisher Suite provides free superfast Wi-Fi up to 100Mb, a PA system and a projector and screen. The Drake Suite offers flexible seating options ideal for private dinners or smaller celebrations for up to 126 guests. There’s a built-in projector and screen and a private breakout area that acts as a welcoming spot for arrival drinks or a portable bar. Venue director Peter Sangster said, “We are very excited to reveal the results of the refurbishment to the Kingfisher and Drake suites. The work has breathed new life into the suites while celebrating the beautiful natural environment surrounding the property and ensuring they offer the latest luxuries with 21st-century design and state-of-the-art facilities.” To book, visit www.devere.co.uk/cotswold-water-park-hotel NEWS DAYLESFORD LAUNCHES FIRST UK-MADE ORGANIC GIN AND VODKA Sustainable farming and retailing experts, Daylesford Organic based in Gloucestershire, has launched a collection of new drinks including the first organic tonic water to be manufactured in the UK and a new organic gin and vodka, featuring a label with a vibrant, bespoke design by artist Hugo Guinness. Say I Do In Somerset It’s official! Outdoor ceremonies are now a permanent fixture. Is your dream to say your vows barefoot on the lawn with sun shining overhead, breeze in your hair, birds singing in the trees? We can’t guarantee the weather, but the open sky is now all yours. Originally brought in as a temporary covid measure, the law changed in April to allow couples to say I Do outside at any existing licensed venue. Somerset Registration Service has been working with wedding venues across Somerset & North Somerset to give couples a greater choice of spots to say their vows. There are still a few essential boxes to tick for safety and accessibility, but otherwise all venues with gardens or outside space may be able to offer that open air option you’re looking for. While the old rules already allowed outdoor vows with the wedding party standing under a permanent structure like a gazebo or bandstand, this really does free things up. Venues have added stone circles, private woodlands, walled gardens and lakeside lawns to their ceremony offers – even marquees now get the go ahead. Spots where only nonlegal blessings could take place are now a choice for the real deal. Our registrar teams are super excited about a season of joining happy couples in some truly gorgeous new locations. Our Outdoor Top Tips Inside or out, only licensed venues can hold legal ceremonies, so still no vows on the beach or on top of Glastonbury Tor. Ceremonies can be held anywhere in the gardens and grounds. It’s worth not straying too far away though – bathroom breaks, catering top ups, and getting yourself from the prep room to the aisle are major considerations. Let your venue help you find the perfect spot – trust them, they know what will work for everyone on the day. Make sure the site is accessible for your guests – heels, mobility issues and grassy hills aren’t a great combination! Let your guests know the plan – they might want to opt for a change of sensible shoes and an extra cosy layer or a broader brimmed hat and some sun screen. Have a bad weather backup plan. This is England, after all. Don’t feel bad if you need to head inside. We’ll make sure the ceremony is so full of love you’ll forget you had to switch plans! SALISBURY AND SOUTH WILTSHIRE Spotlight on... HATCH HOUSE, TISBURY Hatch House is a family home located in a private setting accessed via a set of armorial gates and a tree-lined avenue. The house was transformed in the early 20th century by the architect Detmar Blow and the stone exterior blends into the setting while the theatrical façade commands views of the picturesque gardens and nods to the vibrant, eclectic interior that maintains the warmth and feel of a family home. Ceremonies can be held in a choice of three areas. The dining room decorated in vibrant yellow with views of the garden on two sides is a small intimate space seating up to 45 guests. Alternatively, the porch situated at the back of the house that overlooks the gardens is another ceremony option and the pavilion that takes centre stage in the heart of the two-tiered, 17th-century walled Dutch garden is an al fresco space. The pavilion enjoys wisteria in bloom during late spring and the garden aisle leads from the house through the ornate garden gate to the pavilion. Receptions take place in the gardens enjoying panoramic views stretching across to the Vale of Wardour. Well-tended borders provide plenty of colour throughout the spring and summer months and the central lawn of the walled garden provides ample space for a marquee. There are smaller garden rooms that can also be utilised, either for extra space or for more intimate celebrations and one of them is large enough for a smaller marquee. Ceremony licence? It ’s party time! Couples planning an autumn wedding can take inspiration from Emily and Ben’s big day at Elmore Court that enjoyed an elegant white and green theme Images courtesy of Daniella Marinos Photography Emily Morse and Ben Meloscia married on 30th October 2021 at Elmore Court in Gloucestershire. http://hitchflicks.co.uk 22
Emily and Ben met on a night out 10 years ago. “We were instantly attracted to each other and went on a date the following week,” Emily tells us. “We became engaged in December 2019 during a romantic winter proposal in Switzerland. We stayed in Geneva and had arranged to go on a bus tour for a day to Chamonix-Mont-Blanc in France to explore the snow up in the mountains but almost didn’t make it because there was a high risk of an avalanche that day. It was magical and a wonderful surprise when Ben asked me to marry him against the scenic snowy backdrop.” SETTING THE SCENE The couple chose to get married at Elmore Court in Gloucestershire. “From the moment we visited, we both knew it was the venue for us,” Emily says. “It offered an exclusive-use, private location and the house is so grand and beautiful. We loved the ceremony room with the option to have the fires lit. The Gillyflower event space, that’s purpose-built for celebrations, really wowed our guests.” The couple chose magnificent flower displays filled with white varieties mixed with plenty of foliage. “We wanted the rooms to feel like there had been a flower explosion!” Emily tells us. “I booked a surpriseVW Campervan to collect the groomsmen from their location and drive them to Elmore Court.” - Emily REAL WEDDINGS 23
