85 EXPERT ADVICE Q&A Beauty Our two experts share their make-up tips for a Christmas wedding Leah says: The most important step before applying any make-up is preparing your skin. During winter, it tends to be dryer, so it’s very important to keep it hydrated. Don’t overload it with products, simply add an item to your daily regime that’s more hydrating. You might think that waterproof products are only for use in the summer but they are just as important in the colder months. A harsh wind can make your eyes watery so using waterproof mascara is recommended. It’s important that your eyes and lips complement one another. A strong red or mauve lipstick can look stunning. It works well with a white bridal dress and a potential snowy backdrop. If you don’t usually wear bold colours then experiment with your chosen shade a week or two ahead of the wedding. A stronger lipstick will need some maintenance throughout the day. Add a subtle shimmer or a very light dusting of glitter to your eyelids. If you aren’t brave enough to try a bold lip then stick to a neutral shade and select a soft rose or gold eye shadow. Try a variety of lip colours to find the one that suits you. Why not opt for a subtle shade for the ceremony and a bolder one for the evening reception? Nadezhda says: There are a few things to consider when booking your hair and make-up artist for a wedding at this festive time. While having a professional with you on the morning of your wedding is essential, bad weather conditions can often make it difficult for them to travel to the venue (or sometimes impossible), so check the weather forecast regularly and consider accommodating them the night before. Maybe they could stay over at the venue? It’s essential that you have your make-up bag with you in the event that they are unable to make it. Traditional Christmas colours are gold, silver, red and berry shades. When it comes to make-up, winter allows you to apply more dramatic shades than during the summer months. However, a good balance is essential so for example, shiny eyes contrasted with matte skin and berry red lips will look great at this time of the year. A winter wedding allows you to create a more complicated hairdo. Why not add ribbons or even micro fairylights braided into your locks?
