I am thinking of booking a professional make-up artist for my wedding. Can you let me know what I need to consider and should expect from an initial consultation? Heather says: As a make-up artist, there are some questions that these professionals should be asking you before performing any make-up services. From the initial consultation, you may be asked a variety of questions like these below: Are you allergic to anything? Your chosen artist will need to know in advance of any booking about an allergy or other condition that may prevent or restrict a treatment because they might have to adjust their kit accordingly. Giving them notice will allow them the time to adapt to your needs. Do you have any concerns? Use this as your chance to ask the artist any questions that you might have and let them reassure you with their knowledge and expertise. This could be about a skin irritation, dry patches, dark circles or something else entirely. Make sure that you tell them so that they can reassure you and prepare suggestions for your concerns. How do you normally wear your make-up? Do you have any photographs of styles that you like? I always like to ask this question because it gives any artist a clear indication of what it is that you’re after and which direction you would like to go in with your ideal make-up look. This also gives us an idea of what is going to work for you. For example, if you say that you don’t wear much make-up normally, then I can predict that you’re not going to like something too heavy, like smoky eyes or a brightly coloured lipstick. Instead, you would likely prefer something more natural and refined that accentuates your facial features. This isn’t always the case because some people like to try out new things. I always like to ask my clients to share any pictures of make-up looks that they like before the trial because, again, it gives me an idea of what my client is going to like, and I can plan my kit accordingly. I love my brides to look like themselves on their special day – the most beautiful version of themselves. I make them look and feel confident and beautiful in their own skin.
