NEWS All the latest from around the region FLOWER CROWNS FOR UKRAINE Claire Cowling of Suffolk-based Thrive Floristry (www.thrivefloristry.com) created this stunning headdress as part of an appeal to help victims of the war in Ukraine. “I really wanted to show my support personally and, together with a group of fellow florists, we decided to be part of a charity campaign to raise funds through our floristry skills,” she explains. Fellow florists around the country have created flower crowns and vinoks, a traditional Ukrainian headdress, and posted photographs of them to raise money for the work being done to support those in need in the war-torn country. Claire’s vinok was inspired by the traditional values of reusing what Mother Nature provides and includes a mix of fresh and dried materials in the colours of the Ukrainian flag, “It was such a joy to make,” she adds. As a special thank-you, Claire is also providing instructions for all those that donate, so they can learn how to make their own flower crown. Woodland WONDER Wellington Wood in Norfolk provided the perfect romantic spot for Ruth and Sam’s al fresco wedding Images courtesy of Vicky Plum Photography Outdoor lovers Ruth and Sam met online and hit it off straight away. “After a couple of dates it was clear to both of us that we were on to something special,” reveals Ruth. Their romance hit new heights on date five, when Sam asked Ruth to be his girlfriend as they were climbing Mount Snowdon during a camping trip in Wales. Their relationship blossomed and when it came to the proposal, Sam chose another panoramic location and popped the question on a clifftop in Cornwall while they were on holiday in January 2020. Ruth knew it was going to happen at some point as they’d already chosen the ring. “However, the time and place were a complete surprise,” she adds. They set the date for October 2020, but after Covid wrecked their original plans, they decided to go ahead and get married in their local registry office with just their immediate family and postpone their humanist ceremony and reception until September 2021. Read on for Ruth’s account of their romantic, chilled celebration … REAL WEDDINGS 31
We had the most amazing personal ceremony, complete with tree planting, hand tying and readings. Our little dog Ruby was guest of honour, and even walked down the aisle with us. We moved the ceremony location to the woods the week before and hoped the weather would be kind to us, which it was. I wore a strapless, ivory lace dress with a necklace owned by my late great aunt, a bracelet I got for my 18th birthday and a flower crown made by my florist. Sam and his groomsmen wore matching grey check suits with burgundy ties and had personalised sunglasses, because Sam is never without his sunnies! “Walking into the woods and seeing all our friends and family there was one of the highlights of the day.” We visited Wellington Wood before we got engaged and instantly fell in love with it. 32
We trusted our florist Natalie completely and the flowers were absolutely gorgeous. She made beautiful seasonal woodland arrangements for the ceremony area, bouquets and hairpieces. We had four long tables and sat with all our friends and families and our pup Ruby had a special seat in between us! After the ceremony, we walked with our guests through the woods to the giant hat tipis and cut the four-tier ‘cheese’ cake. “After lockdown and not being able to see people for such a long time, we just wanted everyone to be able to relax and sit down together.” 33 REAL WEDDINGS
A colleague who does calligraphy wrote all the place names which we displayed on mini logs with a pressed leaf at each setting to match the woodland theme. We had a delicious hog roast and ice cream from a tricyle for dessert. “The following day, our guests came back to the venue for coffee and pastries, which gave us a lovely opportunity see everyone again and thank them all!” My friend Sharon Capon made our centrepiece cake and lots of lovely cupcakes. “The tables were named after different herbs and reflected how much we love the great outdoors.” 34

Kindred spirits Charlotte and James celebrated their wedding under the big, beautiful Suffolk sky Images courtesy of Thetford Photography 36
A shared loved of the countryside and laid-back lifestyle helped cement the bond between Charlotte and James. They’d known each other for years and had been in the same friendship group since going to Kesgrave High School together. They kept in touch through mutual friends and met up socially, but it wasn’t until after Charlotte graduated from university and moved back to Suffolk, that they started dating. POPPING THE QUESTION Romance blossomed, they bought and renovated a house together, got their black Labrador puppy Rocco and just as James was thinking of popping the question, Covid threw a spanner in the works. He was then unexpectedly faced with the challenge of planning the proposal during lockdown, without Charlotte catching on. The magical moment happened while out on a romantic, snowy walk with Rocco in January 2021. “It was a complete surprise,” reveals Charlotte. “While I was trying to get a cute photo of Rocco in the snow, James decided it was the perfect time and place to get down on one knee!” He was obviously right because she said ‘yes’! THE TIME AND PLACE “Due to the many lockdowns and stories of other people having to cancel their wedding plans, we thought long and hard about the when, where and how we’d get married. In the end, we decided that we wanted an intimate, family affair anyway, to reflect our easy-going, outdoor-loving lifestyle,” explains Charlotte. She grew up in the small Suffolk village of Levington, where her parents still live in her childhood home. With strong links to the community, getting married in the village church, with its breathtaking views of the River Orwell, was a no-brainer. “We were fortunate enough to have family friends who owned a smallholding just opposite, which provided the perfect setting for our outdoor reception,” she adds. They tied the knot on 28th August 2021 and opted for a relaxed, boho-style country theme with bright floral, dahliainspired orange, pink, yellow and red hues with pops of cobalt blue. REAL WEDDING 37

LOOKING THE PART When it came to choosing her dream dress, Charlotte knew immediately when she found the one. “It was the only dress I tried on and I fell in love with it straight away, which was a relief considering all the shops having to close during the pandemic,” she recalls. It had lace and pearl details, a small train, flowing sleeves and she completed the look with earrings and a necklace from Oliver Bonas and a gold and pearl bracelet passed down through the family. The bridesmaids, Charlotte’s sisters Jess and Anni, wore dusky pink dresses while James looked dashing in a navy tail suit with the two bestmen, his brother Elliot and best friend Jacob, and both dads in suits to match. As an extra personal touch, they provided a selection of homegrown floral handmade buttonholes or corsages for people to choose from as they arrived at the church. Their wedding rings were especially meaningful as they made them themselves at the Woodbridge Jewellery Workshop using gold from rings inherited from James’ great grandmother. Charlotte recalls, “We had such a wonderful time and learnt so much from both Rick and Maggie, who run it. We loved the romance of creating each other’s rings and enjoyed it so much that we booked in again and James made my engagement ring while I made cufflinks for him to wear on the big day.” SETTING THE SCENE “The theme for the wedding centred around my love of growing flowers, with dahlias being a firm favourite of mine. I grew most of the blooms at home, which we then arranged in large clusters for the table centrepieces and also used for the buttonholes, bouquets and to decorate the altar,” explains Charlotte. The windowsills and entrance of the church were decorated with baskets of living herbs including fennel, mint, rosemary, thyme and myrtle, a traditional favourite for weddings. Drawing inspiration from their Mediterranean holidays, the aisle was also lined with olive trees. “We felt this suited the atmosphere of St Peter’s Church with its rustic brick flooring, white-washed walls and wooden seating inside,” adds Charlotte. The trees were later given as gifts to members of the main wedding party. In keeping with family tradition, they lit a unity candle during the ceremony, as Charlotte’s parents had done at their wedding. “They lit their family candle, and we then took the flame from that to light ours,” TIME TO CELEBRATE The reception was held on a neighbour’s plot of land, just a short walk away from the church. A long, banquet-style table was set up in the centre surrounded by festoon lighting, paper lanterns, tall arches and the olive trees which had been transported from the church. Through their links with scouting, the couple were able to borrow marquees as a wet-weather backup, but luckily the rain held off so they could dine outside. Charlotte says, “To complement the relaxed, boho-style feel we opted for woodblock-printed tablecloths and napkins, which my mum and I made, wicker placemats and bottle baskets, coloured glass goblets and big jars of homegrown flowers. The festoon lighting and an array of coloured candles added to the ambience during the evening.” The food was a delicious mix of Mediterranean and Greek influences with sharing platters of local meats and cheeses, homemade bread, chutneys and an Eton Mess buffet for dessert with homemade meringues, chocolate brownie torte, fresh seasonal fruit and cream. In the evening they had a Greek barbecue of marinaded lamb and spatchcock chicken served with salads and flatbreads. Charlotte adds, “Our family friend REAL WEDDINGS 39
