Your Devon and Cornwall Wedding - July/August 2020 (Issue 26)
HALLSANNERY HOUSE, BIDEFORD This stunning Grade II listed manor house set high on a hilltop is surrounded by 60 acres of parkland and fields, offering incredible views across the Taw Torridge Estuary. With the sandy beaches of Westward Ho! and Instow just a 15-minute drive away, barefoot beach wedding photographs are a possibility. A fantastic photographic backdrop at the venue is the East Lawn where the rhododendrons are in bloom during early summer. Hallsannery is home to 11 stylish en suite bedrooms, reception rooms boasting period features, and a wow-factor hall, not to mention the dining room with its showcase chandelier. It specialises in exclusive wedding weekends. Ceremonies take place in a variety of places. The Portico, with its grand Georgian pillars, provides an opportunity to create the ultimate open-air ceremony, with no limits on the capacity. Inside, there’s the hall holding up to 80 guests for a ceremony, with its ornate cornice, and stunning lanterns. The light and airy Morning Room offers beautiful views over the front lawn and is ideal for more intimate gatherings of up to 30 loved ones. The Drawing Room offers the opportunity for a summer ceremony of up to 30 guests with doors leading on to the garden, and the Dining Room, with its parquet flooring, stunning chandeliers and opulent gold silk curtains, offers a larger space for up to 100 people. Pimms and canapés are served on the terrace to the front of the house (there’s no corkage charge at the venue), and a string quartet can play in the nearby summer house with guests enjoying croquet on the lawn. Inside, the Hall and adjacent reception rooms offer impressive surroundings for after-ceremony drinks, if the weather changes. The wedding breakfast is served in the Dining Room for up to 70 guests seated at round or long tables, whilst larger weddings will require a marquee. The evening entertainment also takes place here as space is seamlessly transformed into a dancefloor and bar area, ideal for those wanting to entertain in one area. Those hiring a marquee should consider a tipi to make the most of the far-reaching views over the river, town and towards Exmoor, whilst more traditional marquees enjoy the shelter of the East Lawn. YURTS FOR LIFE These luxury yurts guarantee a quality structure having been precision-built in Devon and are available to hire in small, medium and large sizes for both intimate nuptials and big gatherings. Finishing touches are also available to hire for three days, from log burners and lighting to tables, chairs and carpets. For the wedding night, a small yurt can be furnished with a wooden bed frame and soft mattress, a duvet, pillows and Egyptian cotton linen sheets. Blankets, rugs, bedside tables, seating and mirrors are also available. While the yurts are not licensed (the premises on which they will stand need to hold a licence), the small 18-ft structure can seat up to 37 guests for a ceremony while the 24-ft one can hold up to 66, and the larger 33-ft yurt can accommodate up to 124 for a large ceremony.
