Your Devon and Cornwall Wedding - Jul/Aug 2019 (Issue 20)
Let’s dance Meet the expert: Bernie Cavanagh is the owner of Wedding Dance Devon (part of the Teign Valley Dance Academy). She teaches lessons in a spacious dance studio and couples can have as many or as few as they want, with many of her clients opting for three lessons each lasting 1.5 hours. Bernie will teach in the privacy of a couple’s home if requested but prefers to use the dance studio. We’re getting married in Devon and want to learn a choreographed first dance. We are both a bit shy so don’t want to take lessons with others. What can you suggest? Bernie says: The first dance is one of the most special times during the wedding reception. It gathers guests around the dancefloor to celebrate the love between two people creating a highly emotional moment and memories that you and your loved ones will cherish forever. If you’re a bit nervous about dancing in front of your family and friends, or worried that your moves might need a bit of practice, then having a few lessons beforehand will give you the confidence and ability to perform in a relaxed, happy and assured manner. I help to create a personal first dance suited to each individual couple with their requirements being my top priority. The end result always amazes loved ones on the day. The dance routine is put together to the couple’s choice of music that might be a favourite song, whether fast or slow, or even a medley of tunes. You shouldn’t be worried if you’re not confident dancers because everything will be taught in a simple, clear manner at the appropriate pace during relaxed and enjoyable lessons. Privacy is ensured in a spacious dance studio, with the option of the lessons taking place in the comfort of your own home if preferred. Couples can take as many (or as few) lessons as they feel that they need in order to learn their first dance. This could be a romantic ballroom style such as the waltz, or fun types such as the jive, lindy hop, swing, salsa or funk. The dance could even be a combination of two or more different styles and can be a natural looking routine, or a choreographed masterpiece – the choice is yours!
