We caught up with celebrity celebrant Cynthia Green for all of the backstage gossip from her various TV appearances, which include Love Is Blind, and to find out why a celebrant-led ceremony might be for you Cynthia Green, 60, was born in Bolton and her illustrious 27-yearlong career as a celebrant and registrar, is peppered with firsts. She conducted the first same sex civil partnership ceremony in 2005 and made history by leading the UK’s first opposite sex civil partnership at midnight in 2014. She has also conducted the first and only ever Scientology wedding. To date, Cynthia has married more than 20,000 couples. She joined Bolton registration service in 1997 while completing the last year of her degree in sociology and psychology. At the time, she was working in a cake factory at night and had small children, but was determined to achieve her goals of a degree and a fulfilling career. She moved to London in 2000 and joined Lambeth register office where she stayed until 2003 when she moved across to join the Islington and London City Register Office where she’s remained for the past two decades. Now a household name, you’ll likely recognise Cynthia from her television work including most recently Love is Blind UK, which aired in August 2024. It’s proven such a hit that it will be returning for another series. Prior to this, Cynthia was the registrar and wedding consultant on Married at First Sight UK for CPL Productions and Channel 4, also a major hit. This social experiment saw singletons matched by science and ultimately marrying a stranger – Cynthia was responsible for conducting the marriage ceremonies. She went on to become an expert on the show and has been involved in five seasons to date. Cynthia was also lead presenter on The Wedding House for Betty Productions and Channel 4 in 2010. This eight-part series saw 24 themed weddings conducted during it’s time on air. One of the couples she married as part of this show was Mario Marconi and Lisa Appleton of Big Brother fame. Cynthia has two children and three grandchildren. She lives in London with her fiancé, Milo, who she enjoyed a whirlwind romance with after they met 18 months ago at a party – he proposed after they’d been together 10 months and they’re planning to tie the knot in Japan in December 2025. CWM’s deputy managing editor Kelly Andrews, caught up with Cynthia recently for a chat... What do you love most about your job? That’s simple! The ceremonies. Nothing is better than bringing a couple together. It’s corny to say, but you can feel the love. However, the births and deaths are also a big part of my job, and I do manage that side and get great satisfaction from helping families deal with the trauma of death. Having lost my mum and dad and I fully know what that is like. For those of our readers who aren’t aware, what’s the difference between a celebrant and a registrar? As a registrar, I can conduct legal ceremonies such as weddings and civil partnerships. As a celebrant, I can conduct renewal of vows, naming ceremonies and commitment ceremonies. However, these ceremonies aren’t legal. In your opinion, why should couples choose a celebrant-led ceremony rather than a church service or a registrar? Or do both have their place? I think they all have their place, but a celebrant led ceremony can be more involved. They tend to be a bit more fun, although still very serious and the couples tailor them to their personalities more. I also get to have a little fun, which is always good. Celebrant-led ceremonies can also be virtually anywhere as long as it’s safe. What would be your top tips for couples who are looking for a highly personalised wedding ceremony?
