My husband and I were recently invited to a romantic two-night getaway at Grove of Narberth in picturesque Pembrokeshire, Wales. Part of the family-owned hospitality business Seren, Grove of Narberth boasts 25 individually designed rooms and suites that seamlessly blend Welsh heritage and modern amenities. Known for its enchanting woodlands, landscaped gardens and delicious food, we couldn’t wait to find out for ourselves what makes this charming retreat such a popular honeymoon destination. REST AND RELAXATION A stone’s throw from the quaint village of Narberth, it’s impossible not to feel relaxed when stepping onto the hotel’s grounds. With 360-degree views of the Welsh valleys, a charming pond and manicured grounds, it’s a picturesque space with photograph opportunities at every turn. The hotel’s main building felt like you were stepping foot into a stately home, albeit with every modern touch tastefully incorporated into its design. The building is a real architectural treat for the eyes. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by a thoughtful member of staff who efficiently checked us in and led us to our cottage, adjacent to the main building – even supplying an umbrella to protect us from the unpredictable Welsh weather! Our romantic cottage, Lovage, was split into a bedroom and a living room, with a parallel bathroom and entrance hallway separating the two main rooms. The cottage had a private courtyard, perfect for a secluded morning drink surrounded by the beautiful flora. The area was lovely and quiet and quickly made you forget there were other guests staying nearby. The living room had multiple comfortable sofas, a wood-burning fire, high ceilings, stunning woodwork and a complimentary mini-bar stocked with multiple local Welsh treats that were delicious. My favourite part of any stay is the bath, and our cottage didn’t disappoint with a spacious free-standing tub that my husband had to drag me away from every time we left the cottage! The room also featured a rainfall shower, his and her sinks and eco-friendly products. A beautifully thought-out room and the perfect space to unwind after a long day exploring the local sites. The final room of the cottage, the bedroom, boasted a king-sized fourpost bed, complete with a luxurious memory foam mattress. The room also featured a large television, complete with Sky TV channels, with something for everyone to enjoy. DELECTABLE DELIGHTS Prior to our visit, I’d heard great things about Grove of Narberth’s food. We had the pleasure of eating at Fernery, which is a fine dining experience unlike anything we’ve tried before. Well deserving of its 4AA Rosettes, the restaurant offered a five-course tasting menu with options for guests who are vegan, vegetarian or have intolerances. Fernery champions local produce, informatively including a map on every table showing where the various dishes had been sourced from – a wellthought-out touch. Beginning with a selection of canapés, the well-informed wait staff talked us through all of the items, providing an in-depth breakdown of every course. Our waitress also suggested a delicious non-alcoholic drink for us to pair with the menu. For the wine lovers out there, the restaurant offers a wine tasting option that can be paired with each course. Our first course, titled The Wye Valley, set the standard for what was to come. A freshly baked sourdough roll and an exquisite cauliflower-based spread were a real treat for the senses. Adoring sea food, the following two courses were perfect. The lobster was delivered in a miniature burger bun that was so adorable and delicately constructed that I almost didn’t want to eat it. This was followed by the sea bass, served with parmesan and bouillabaisse – a delicious course that we’ll both be thinking about for many months to come. The Meat Matters course featured a fresh, tender serving of steak with a side of perfectly prepared and selected vegetables. Lastly, the Garden Rhubarb was a dreamy finish to a truly memorable meal, with multiple layers and tastes that lingered in the mouth for hours to follow. PURE LUXURY Waking up in the morning after an amazing night’s sleep, we couldn’t wait to try breakfast at the hotel’s second restaurant, Artisan Brasserie. This light-filled space is beautifully decorated and continues the luxurious décor from the rest of the house. Our attentive waiter showed us to our table and offered suggestions from the expansive menu. We enjoyed the traditional breakfast and eggs Benedict, which were expertly presented and tasted sublime. Paired with local tea, coffee and juices, it was the perfect start to the day before heading out to explore more of what the area has to offer. We loved our stay at Grove of Narberth and can’t wait to visit again very soon!
