Your Cheshire and Merseyside Wedding - September/October 2024 (Issue 77)

SEASONAL TIPS Your Cheshire & Merseyside Wedding editor Kelly Andrews says: I love the autumn. It’s my favourite season by far. It’s partly the immense relief of summer coming to an end and the fact that Christmas is just over the horizon! The perfect blend of the cooler climate with pleasantly warm days that often take us into September, it’s the ideal time of year to get married. Sure, your classic burnt orange with brown tones is a wonderful palette to opt for at this time of year; especially when you combine it with the oh-so on trend Pantone Colour of the year Peach Fuzz. But what about thinking outside the box a little? I love a dark, rich red or burgundy highlight combined with blush and sage green. Or go for this year’s trend of going all-out vibrant with bright zesty orange hot pink. Either way considering the colours of nature at this time of year is a great place to begin. Pair with oh-so romantic candlelight (venue permitting) with candles in your chosen colours for a magical ambience. There are a few practical pointers you’ll need to think about during this season too, particularly if you’re looking at the latter part towards November. Namely, the nights drawing in and the clocks going back in October mean you’ll have less natural daylight to play with. Consider opting for an earlier ceremony time, so you can embrace more of the great outdoors. Also, chat to your photographer so you know what to expect when it comes to heading out and about for your couple shots. The good news is that autumn typically means duller conditions, which contrary to what you might expect is actually preferable for photographers who have less of a challenge when it comes to the glaring sunshine and squints of their subjects. There’ll also be more opportunity for glorious dusk and sunset pics, so devise a plan to make the most of it. Presumably you’ll have chosen the autumn with your eyes wide open, aware of the unpredictability of the weather. Not that Britain’s weather is ever predictable, we can indeed experience all four seasons in one day! So, just embrace it and go with whatever the conditions give you. Pack an elegant umbrella prop in case of rain, and picture the amazing veil shots if there’s wind. If you want to chance an al fresco ceremony, do it! As long as you’re well-armed with an indoor plan B all will be well. With said weather challenges comes the additional consideration of what to wear. If it’s likely to be a bit chilly when you head outside this is a great excuse to bag one of those fun and funky painted and personalised bridal denim or leather jackets. I’d be tempted to tie the knot in the autumn, just so I can wear one! Similarly, bear in mind that your guests are likely to turn up in coats, so ensure your venue can offer a cloakroom so they aren’t slung over your chair backs ruining the look of your reception hall. AUTUMN LEAVES Celebrant Sarah Boalch from Ceremonies With Personality (www.ceremonieswithpersonality.com) says: Autumn is such a magical time to get married, the colours from changing leaves create the most beautiful backdrop for photographs for one! Incorporating those autumnal vibes into your ceremony could include dressing your ceremony space with themed florals, but why not include a handfasting braid to match? A handfasting is an ancient Celtic tradition, which sees the couple’s hands bound to symbolise how their lives are now bound by the promises they have made to each other. Celebrants each have their own way of performing handfastings. For me, I love to bind the couple in braids that, when released, form an infinity knot – symbolic and a beautiful keepsake! I hand-weave all the braids so incorporating autumnal colours would be no problem. Another idea to include your guests would be to place an artificial leaf and pen on each chair, during the ceremony they’ll write how they feel in that moment with you before throwing them like confetti as you walk back down the aisle at the end. The leaves are then collected up for you to create a keepsake from whether that be a family tree type canvas or to simply keep them in a special box – unique, colourful and fun! Plus, your aisle confetti photos would be amazing! The vibrant colours, the warmth and cosiness of the season will almost certainly set the scene for a beautiful wedding. Here are a few things to consider when planning your autumnal nuptials. The sun sets earlier and daylight is lower so candlelight will be your best friend and will provide the most romantic vibe and setting. Consider using Autumnal scented candles such as cedar wood or spiced apple for an earthy aroma that guests will remember. Be brave and incorporate all things autumnal, such as pumpkins and toasting marshmallows and use rich tones and colours within your decor. Golds are fantastic this time of year. Consider also, providing blankets outside for guests. Whatever you decide on for your autumnal wedding there’s no doubt the natural beauty of this magical season will provide you with the perfect romantic backdrop to say “I do.” 62
