NOW SHOWING Local charity Liverpool Lighthouse, which was established in 1998, has brought community cinema back to Anfield with the opening of the restored Gaumont Palace Cinema, 91 years after its birth. The cinema, also the charity’s base, aims to promote wellbeing for the local community, which has the highest levels of deprivation nationally at a time when people are already struggling with the cost of living crisis, bringing people together in positive shared experience and providing creative, cultural opportunities to promote connection and improved mental health and wellbeing. The historical gem dates back to 1931 when it was opened and managed as an Art Deco cinema, a modern icon of its time. Liverpool Lighthouse’s restoration project, supported by Awards for All, LFC, Liverpool Mayoral Fund and Crowd Funding, involved installing a 10-metre Cine Pro electrical screen and cinema-quality AV system. The vintage feel was returned by bringing the remaining Art Deco features back to life including the historical box office and installing popcorn makers, candyfloss trollies and lighting up the venue outside with a retro ‘now showing’ sign. A recognition of the continued work it’s doing to reduce the environmental impact of its business. The florist was also awarded the Environmental and Climate award in 2021. To have won for a second year recognises the work the team are doing from year to year, examining each area of the business to make continued improvements. Owner Gemma Wakerley says, “We’ve been on a journey since 2015 to work in the most sustainable way possible, taking into account environmental and socio-economic factors. I’m pleased to see that such awards are now commonplace in the business community. This can only serve to increase what we’re all doing to help preserve the world we live in. At Booker Flowers and Gifts being eco-friendly, community-minded and buying responsibly is part of what we do, and to be recognised for this fills us with pride.” Since winning the award in 2021 Gemma and her team have continued to introduce measures to reduce their carbon footprint and environmental impact, such as going paperless and starting to compost green waste. When asked about what businesses can do to be greener Gemma told us, “Going green is about making small, easy changes and building from there. I’m delighted that now green issues are on the agenda for government as it’s a lot easier to access help and support. Over the last year I’ve worked with a Liverpool John Moores University student to help develop a system that has allowed the shop to go paperless while improving productivity and customer service. The student is now able to take this system to market, so it will help other florists as well. We have more plans to carry on this sustainable path, so watch this space!” For more information on ensuring your wedding flowers are sustainable check out www.bookerflowersandgifts.co.uk © Liverpool Lighthouse 10
