Bear in mind any special requirements. Empire-line dresses are great for expectant bridesmaids. You can order a couple of sizes bigger, or in a longer length, to accommodate a growing bump. Some designers even offer maternity versions of their gowns, so do check with your boutique if pregnancy is a factor. ❤ Shop for bridesmaids’ gowns after selecting your own Make sure you have a firm idea of your wedding’s theme. There’s nothing worse than a mismatched style that clashes with the bride on her wedding day. ❤ Select a colour from your day’s palette Does it complement the other elements you’ve chosen to convey your theme, such as flowers, centrepieces and groomswear? ❤ Be conscious of the season Are the dresses suitable for a winter wedding, or do you need cover ups such as stoles or boleros? On the other hand, if the big day is set to be a scorcher, could you accessorise them with beautiful parasols? ❤ Consider the finances Make sure you’ve all agreed who is paying for the dresses before you start shopping, and understand that if your maids are buying their own, some may not be able to match the budget you’d envisioned. Be mindful also, that it’s unlikely they’ll want to wear or pay for something they’d don’t like. You’ll need to approach the situation with a lot of tact. ❤ Schedule alterations appointments Ensure that everyone can move freely in their gowns for bending to help you with your dress, or for heading onto the dancefloor. Plus, a well-fitted dress looks fantastic. Allow plenty of time as good seamstresses get booked up quickly, especially during the peak summer period. DON’T ❤ Encourage your bridesmaids to wear excessively high heels Especially if they’re not used to them. Instead select a smaller heel that’ll be comfortable enough to wear all day. If they were to wear high heels and take them off later, long dresses will drag on the floor and get trampled on the dancefloor. ❤ Experience that sinking feeling Invest in some heel protectors, especially if you’re set to be wed al fresco, as they’ll stop everyone gradually sinking into the grass as you say “I do.” We recommend Clean Heels. ❤ Leave yourself with a last-minute panic Some bridesmaids’ gowns can take as long as bridalwear to be made, with designers needing a 24-week lead time if they’re made to order. So, be sure to start looking for bridal party attire as soon as you’ve purchased your own.
