MICHELIN STAR DINING IN MERSEA ISLAND Stark broke the mould of traditional Michelin restaurants – there’s loud music, dark walls, no white table clothes or frills and famously, Chef Ben works alone in the kitchen of the intimate venue, meticulously crafting the frequently changing, seasonal six-course tasting menus. It started life as a tiny sandwich shop on an inconspicuous street in Broadstairs, which Ben and Sophie transformed into a destination dining spot. Their motto is ‘good food, laid bare’ and the new restaurant offers the same pared back decor and skilled flavour combinations using seasonal ingredients, as Ben says: “If it’s not in season, it has no flavour and no right to be on the plate.” Expect £90 set menus featuring two meat dishes, like the duck liver parfait, confit leg, ginger bread, hazelnut and apricot; two fish courses, like mackerel, cucumber dashi, lardo and borage, and two desserts, like the clean and fresh goat’s curd, pistachio sorbet, lemon puree and grape. Guests can accompany this with an optional wine flight for £55 from natural wine aficionados, Les Caves de Pyrène. They are bold and uncompromising in their offering, not catering for allergies or dietary requirements, due to the nature of the set menu, Chef Ben personally preparing all dishes, and to reduce food waste - every diner is served the same menu each evening. The formally landscaped wedding garden has been cleverly planted to show interest all year. Beyond the garden is the woodland area for woodland weddings fronted by the recently renovated pond and fountain providing an elegant arrival. The Main Barn known as the Grain Store incorporates a large, open fireplace and mezzanine gallery to make full use of the 35-foot-high ceilings. The Grain Store is centrally located between the bar and dance barn helping your evening flow. George and Daniel met each other right before lockdown, as George explains, “It wasn’t the best time to fall in love but we managed to get through it together by speaking every day, from WhatsApp messages to FaceTime. It meant that we really got to know each other and on a really deep level that - without Covid - may not have happened.” George and Daniel bonded over a love of BBC Radio 2, Disney and playing lots of Animal Crossing together on the Switch! The pair finally got to see each other more ‘in real life’ towards the end of the summer 2020, and finally managed to put the world to rights by moving in with each other in 2021! Daniel proposed to George at Epcot in Walt Disney World in May 2022 – Daniel’s favourite place. It took place first thing in the morning in the Rose Garden located in the UK Pavilion of Epcot. Dan explains, “I felt it was a perfect location that blended a bit of home and a bit of Disney magic. George said yes and we celebrated with the best engagement holiday, being spoilt by all the amazing cast members at Disney World.” When it came to planning the big day, it was only natural that Disney played a big part in the plans and aesthetic for the wedding. Daniel and George Hedley-Friar became Mr and Mr on 4th April 2024 at Leez Priory. Here, the happy newlyweds tell us more about their day... SETTING THE SCENE Daniel and George had their eyes on a classic venue. Daniel tells us more... “We’d always liked the idea of getting married in a castle. We explored the idea of some really chic gardens and boutique hotel wedding venues. However, as soon as we saw Leez Priory we knew it was the one. Right upon our first visit, the team were so welcoming and the entire location felt like home so we knew straight away it was the one for us.” As both grooms work in marketing, the wedding branding had to be on point. George reveals, “It was one of the most important details to us. We had a full brand book and guidelines on fonts and image choices to ensure that the entire day felt beautifully designed. Perhaps our favourite detail was out ‘G&D’ monogram logo that was featured on all stationery and was even printed onto a flag that hung from the roof of Leez Priory.” The favours were seed packets themed around the Epcot Flower and Garden festival which was on at the the time of the engagement. The table décor matched the overall black and white aesthetic of the day with the theme for the Wedding Breakfast as ‘BBC Radio 2’. The table plan board was tied into the idea of the ‘Radio 2 Breakfast Show’ with all the presenter names and guest locations detailed. The table names were all themed around BBC Radio 2 presenters including Claudia Winkleman, Zoe Ball, Rylan Clark, Sara Cox and so on. This theme was actually picked up upon by Radio 2 themselves and Daniel and George had ‘pre-ceremony’ vows live on air with Scott Mills! And more recently, they were invited live in the studio with Rylan and Scott to talk all about their day - eventually being dubbed ‘THE Radio 2 Wedding’! The centrepieces were designed by Copper Cacti and were themed around succulents and greenery. Daniel is an avid gardener and lovery of succulents and plants and was keen to 30
choose something both beautiful and sustainable – that so many guests still have to this day in their homes! Catering for the day was provided by Leez Priory and was eenjoyed by all. The grooms opted for a classic roast for the main meal, but the highlight was the dark chocolate and cherry fondant for dessert. The grooms also designed four bespoke cocktails for the day themed around different icons of Walt Disney World, including a ‘Scotch Mist’ which was the favourite drink of Walt Disney himself! DRESSED TO IMPRESS The grooms wore custom made suits by Anthony’s in Billericay which is where Daniel – in a full circle moment – once had his prom suit. They both opted for a classic tuxedo style with white jackets, black trousers and butterfly style bowties. These were accessorised with custom cufflinks and pocket watches which were a gift from the grooms to each other and from their families. The best men both wore complementing black tuxedos to match the grooms and fit the monochrome aesthetic. TIME TO CELEBRATE During the wedding breakfast, the grooms were surprised with a series of video messages from their favourite Radio 2 presenters wishing them well on their wedding day which had been arranged by George’s friend, Holly. This included messages and well wishes from Rylan, Jo Whiley and Reverend Kate Bottley. The day was topped off with the classic Disney ‘kiss goodnight’ with a fully choreographed fireworks display by Dynamic Fireworks. These were synchronised to the iconic Walt Disney World firework soundtrack, Happily Ever After. Many of the guests commented it was the most impressive firework display they’d ever seen at a wedding – the grooms wore their custom ‘groom Mickey Mouse ears’ that they bought the day after their engagement knowing they’d be a big part of their special day. The dancefloor was made ever more hyped up by foam glow sticks that Daniel had discovered on his stag do and knew had to be a part of the day. For their first dance they entered to ABBA’s Gimme Gimme Gimme and finished the night on The Winner Takes It All to bring it back to ABBA – before a surprise exit, leaving to the ‘sad version’ of the EastEnders end music which was a hilarious moment for all. MEMORABLE MOMENTS Of course, being called by Scott Mills to appear live on his Radio 2 show before the ceremony was a particular unexpected moment that they’ll never forget! Dan adds, “Neither of us had planned for or knew this was going to happen but it was such a dream come true! There were many special moments. However, we particularly loved the ceremony which we hadn’t expected to love as much as we did – a friend Annika sang When You Wish Upon a Star during the signing and this was a particular moment where the enormity of the day really hit home. As the newlyweds get ready to jet away on honeymoon (California and Hawaii this September for a visit to Disneyland, naturally, and Honolulu) we wish them a magical future together. Following this, Emily had organised a surprise birthday party for Mark but little did she know that Mark knew about the surprise and added a surprise of his own! What Emily thought was just going to be a birthday party turned into an engagement party when they returned from the proposal. All the family were there for the double celebration!
