89 WIN! A luxury getaway worth £1,000 40 HOUSE PARTY Commissioning a stationer who can create custom illustrations of your venue is a great way to personalise your on-the-day signage and invitations. Here, Verity and Jonny celebrated their beloved Dunedin Country House. Is anyone else still buzzing from the Olympics and Paralympics? I don’t know about you, but my social life was completely on hold while it was on! I can’t believe we have to wait another four years before it rolls around again. As someone whose idea of exercise is getting off the sofa and grabbing a snack, I always admire everyone who takes part. When the time came to write to you for this issue, the Olympic moto got me thinking: faster, higher, stronger – together. It’s that final word that always causes my heart to soar. It’s that one word that truly speaks to what the Olympics is all about. It’s bringing the world together in friendship and camaraderie, and does the same within the teams of each individual competing country. But alongside the elation and pride of celebrating Team GB’s gold medals came the heartbreak and tragedy of the violence taking place throughout our region. It was that word again though that helped me to find some comfort. Together we can all heal. Thinking about how I should broach this issue of Your Yorkshire Wedding, the notion of togetherness came to me again. It defines a marriage, doesn’t it? You are, after all, in it together and that’s why you say “I do” and make those vows. You form a forever partnership to navigate life together. I believe that’s the way forward for all of us. Love is a great healer. Kelly x ISSN 1746-9384 Your Yorkshire Wedding is solely owned, published and designed by Ellis Media and Events Ltd. WHERE THE PARTY’S AT One of Yorkshire’s most remarkable stately homes has completed a state-of-the-art renovation to create an exclusive event and party space unlike anything else in the region. Birdsall House, home to the Willoughby family for more than 300 years, opened to the public for the first time in April 2018 for weddings and events. The Old Kitchens represent a total transformation of the building’s large abandoned Victorian kitchen complex of rooms. Found in the basement of the house, they stopped being used after WWII. The project has taken more than two years to complete. Now available to hire for events and parties as a standalone space, it also provides a wonderful area for wedding receptions. Meanwhile, the rest of Birdsall House and its gardens are still available to use for wedding ceremonies and breakfasts. The Old Kitchens are available to hire now, and viewings are welcomed by private appointment. To find out more, visit https://birdsallestates.co.uk HOWSHAM HALL IS READY TO PARTY! What’s more, the venue offers you the opportunity to extend your special day into a full weekend of celebrations. Whether you’re planning an intimate wedding or a larger affair, a sumptuous feast of a wedding breakfast or a relaxed summer buffet, Howsham Hall is the ideal location to create your dream wedding. COUNTRY GARDEN In an English Jordan and Mark’s wedding theme was inspired by their love of the great outdoors Images courtesy of Gabrielle Bower Photography 28
Jordan and Mark met via friends while studying at university and would often see each other at parties. In fact, it was one birthday party in particular where they really hit it off, but it was just when Jordan was about to move to London for work. However, they didn’t give up and met up in London for a few dates, as well as embarking on a long distance relationship with Mark remaining in Leeds. Happily, everything worked beautifully for the couple and seven months later, Jordan moved back up to Yorkshire. Mark popped the question in their kitchen one day with the words: “I wanted to begin our next big adventure in the place we started our first one.” The two had purchased a big renovation project a year before, intended to be their forever home, so it’s sentimental to them. “I wasn’t expecting a proposal, but obviously I said ‘yes’,” Jordan says. “He’d already put Champagne in the fridge, ready to celebrate.” Setting out on their venue search, the couple had only visited one venue before meeting the staff at Escrick Park. “They took us to look at Skipwith Hall and we immediately fell in love with the gardens there,” Jordan explains. “So, when we found out we could get married in the gardens, we were sold!” The two are both fans of the great outdoors and Jordan adores wildflowers, so they quickly knew it was the venue for them. “We were able to make it really personal to us and knowing they only had a few weddings there each year meant it felt extra special. An extra bonus was that the day we had our first date was available, so we were married five years later to the day,” Jordan continues. That all-important date was 24th June. Join us now as we find out more... LOOKING THE PART In honour of their venue and great love for the outdoors Jordan and Mark opted for a country garden theme with a palette of spring colours including sage, orange, coral and blue. The brief for the flowers was wildflowers. After meeting with their florist and discussing the palette, they came up with a natural look featuring caramel, coral and orange roses, bunny tails, coral and green dahlias, and blue pansies. They were also keen to incorporate Mark’s Australian heritage, so they included a few springs of eucalyptus. The five table names were also chosen to reflect the theme: freesia, blue iris, gladiolus, chrysanthemum, and peony, along with their meanings in a botanical guide style. Meanwhile, place names were wooden hearts carved with each guests’ names doubling as a memento for them. They were also gifted wildflower seed pouches made from recycled materials and personalised with the newlyweds’ initials. The long, rustic banqueting tables were decorated with sage green chiffon runners with centrepieces featuring floating candles and sprigs of foliage dotted around. “We didn’t want the tables too crowded as we were having sharing platters,” Jordan tells us. The venue was also highlighted by a partial floral arch adorned in the same flower varieties as the bridal bouquet. The reception took place in two huge stretch tents, and the entrance was decorated with two olive trees. Also to be found were hay bale seats, vintage lamps, and bottles containing fairylights. Jordan made signs to guide guests through the venue, while Mark’s mum dried flower petals for their confetti. FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD The delicious wedding breakfast was provided by El Kantina. “They were so amazing,” the bride says. “We had lots of comments about how great the food was.” The couple used recyclable bamboo plates and cutlery with reusable linen napkins wanting their big day to be as sustainable as possible. “Laura from El Kantina is so lovely and made sure everything was just how we wanted it,” the bride continues. “As we were busy with photographs she even made sure that some canapés were saved for us.” Louisianna’s Bars created bespoke cocktails for the newlyweds, which were a big hit. “They’re a really great group who know how to have a good time,” Jordan tells us. LOOKING THE PART “I’d never daydreamed about my wedding dress from a young age,” the bride REAL WEDDINGS 29

shares. “So, I went to one bridal boutique just down the street from our house. I’m not the type of person who cares about designers or big names and I didn’t want the dress hunting to be a long drawn-out process.” So, Jordan found herself attracted to simpler styles. She picked out four or five gowns to try on, but although she liked them all, she didn’t feel any of them were the one. Later, while browsing the internet for inspiration she saw Madeline Gardner’s Rasia for Morilee, went back to try it on and loved it. Jordan paired the gown with a pearl hair vine, and one of her bridesmaids gave her a delicate gold bangle for her something borrowed, which she’d worn for her own wedding. It belonged to their best friend who they’d sadly lost just after university. “It was a really special moment and such a lovely thing to have with me on the day,” Jordan remembers. Mark wore a sage green suit with brown brogues, silver paisley tie and pocket square, and brass cufflinks that his bride had gifted to him as a wedding present; they were engraved with the lyrics of their first dance song. His buttonhole featured a large caramel rose with bunny tails. The groomsmen were dressed to match and paired their suits with a green/grey metallic-look tie and pocket square. They each wore a single white rose wrapped in hessian rope in their lapels. The bridesmaids looked beautiful in sage green chiffon. They chose their own dresses as Jordan was keen that they should be comfortable. They varied in styles with one halter neck, another a one-shoulder number and the third featured illusion sleeves. “I wanted the suits and dresses to showcase the flowers and natural beauty of the gardens,” Jordan explains. MEMORABLE MOMENTS “Neither of us slept very well the night before as we were so nervous,” the bride remembers. “I was also worried as I wasn’t involved with the setup on the day so had to trust Mark to do a good job with the help of our sister-in-law, which he did!” She continues, “We were both very emotional, but Mark cried throughout the day. I teared up once, which is the opposite of how we usually are in life! We couldn’t eat our meals due to nerves and excitement. We were both devastated at that as the food was incredible. It was the best day of our lives and we couldn’t have asked for more.” The best man’s speech received rave reviews, even though it had only been written the night before! Although parts of it were somewhat embarrassing for Mark, he’s happily still friends with best man, Ben. “All of our suppliers were incredible and worked so hard,” Jordan remembers. “Empty Quarter Events is a family-run business and no request was too much for them. They made sure everything looked perfect before they left.” THE GREAT GETAWAY The couple splashed out on a two-week honeymoon to Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast. Happily, they managed to take the great weather from their wedding day with them, and enjoyed a heatwave that even the locals were struggling to handle! “It was a dream trip and we managed to visit all the historical sites including Pompeii, Herculaneum and Napoli,” Jordan shares. As well as eating and drinking the finest food and wine from some Michelin starred restaurants, they also experienced a horseback ride to a winery, and hired a boat for the day. “I still dream of owning a speedboat, even though I live in Leeds and get slightly seasick,” Jordan laughs. 31 REAL WEDDINGS
