FLOWERS 45 Local florists answer your questions ONCE AND FLORAL Flowers and weddings have gone hand in hand since the Ancient Greeks, Romans and Egyptians carried posies of fragrant herbs and wore floral garlands at their nuptials to ward off bad luck as well as to symbolise new beginnings, fidelity and fertility. Today, it’s difficult to imagine a wedding without them. Since those early days, they’ve become a staple of wedding styling, bringing themes and palettes together and creating an atmosphere of joy and romance. If your own big-day blooms have now reached the top of your to-do list, dive in, as we’ve asked the county’s florists some of the most pressing questions at the forefront of our minds. So, don’t finalise your flowers until you’ve read this! TIPPED FOR THE TOP What are the hottest new trends in wedding flowers? Jill Alexander at Pontefract-based The Little Flower Hut (www.thelittleflowerhut.co.uk) says, “Ombre colour blocking is in! It’s bold, luxurious and creates an amazing impact adding the wow factor to any celebration. Embracing this trend with flowers brings a striking modern edge with vibrant, monochromatic hues artfully blended into showstopping floral installations and bouquet arrangements. What’s not to love?” Meanwhile, Liz Wood from The Watering Can Florist in Huddersfield (www.thewateringcanflorist.co.uk) is finding a more classic palette is still popular: “The hottest trend I’m getting asked for at the moment is still the subtle white and green florals with lots of foliage. Peach Fuzz is the Pantone colour of the year for 2024, but then out of the blue, I’ll get a bride who lists every colour in the spectrum!” CROWNING GLORY I like the idea of wearing flowers in my hair. Do you have any ideas? Nicola Frear from Lottie Roberts Flowers in York (https://lottierobertsflowers.com) says, “Less is most definitely more sometimes, so if you don’t want to go down the full flower crown path, opt for a delicate hair vine instead. These are lightweight, elegant, perfect if you’re wearing your hair down and can also be made well in advance of the big day if you choose dried flowers. Alternatively, you can have a few delicate springs of flowers in your hair, which your hair stylist can pin into your up do. Gypsophila or waxflower are perfect for this, and your florist will be happy to provide individually wired flowers if necessary.” Liz says, “Flowers for the hair would depend on your hair style, but if you have long, flowing locks, I’d suggest a full flower crown – oh so boho! If, on the other hand you prefer to wear your hair in a short bob, I’d recommend a flower comb with small dainty flowers.” https://georginaharrisonphotography.co.uk THE LITTLE FLOWER HUT
