Spring has officially arrived, and before long we’ll be enjoying summer in full bloom. So, what better topic could we have chosen to look into this issue than wedding flowers? I must confess, I adore fresh flowers and love nothing more than putting together our annual feature on the subject – I do hope you’ll indulge me for a short while! The perfect wedding blooms effortlessly fill an empty venue with romance, fragrance and colour, creating the ultimate ambience; and with the right florist on your side, they can speak volumes about the two of you and the vision for your big day. What’s more, they’re efficient! Pedestals, aisle meadow arrangements, ceremony arches and much more can all be moved into your reception space after the “I dos” and seamlessly transform into centrepieces and top table backdrop. You get the most from your budget, your theme carries through and you keep waste to a minimum. Your wedding day is all about the two of you, so why not have a think about how you can tailor your flowers to further tell your love story. The language of flowers combines tradition with sentimentality and conveys a meaning that perhaps only the two of you will understand, but as you’re the two most important that’s all that matters. For example, gypsophila is a wedding staple but perhaps its meaning, everlasting love, has been lost over the years. Some of my other favourites are: cornflowers symbolising prosperity and friendship; hydrangeas meaning gratitude and understanding; peonies speaking of romance, prosperity, good luck and a happy life; and roses, in particular pink, which symbolise admiration. So, you see, you can write an entire love letter to your new spouse through your bouquet – how romantic. I do hope some of this has whet your appetite for more; if so, don’t miss our flower feature from page 45 where the region’s experts have answered some of the floral questions at the forefront of our minds. NEWS Catch up on the latest from around the county EDITOR LOVES Based in Hudderfield, The Watering Can Florist, is dedicated to sourcing Britishgrown blooms when it comes to her stunning wedding florals and has recently enlisted the help of several new British growers for a wonderful Mother’s Day workshop hosted at local Lu’s Place Cafe: Smith and Munson, Highcroft Nurseries, and Highlands Farm Cut Flowers, with foliage from Irish Green Guys. The workshop was a huge hit with the lovely mums, daughters and grandmas present, who created Mother’s Day vase arrangements with these beautiful domestic blooms. It didn’t end there though as owner Liz was on a roll, sourcing more glorious English flowers from somewhere even closer to home for the Easter weekend – The Yorkshire Flower Patch in Hebden Bridge where her British-grown journey began back in 2020. Built in 1878 as the Royal Station Hotel, inspiration for the new name draws deeply from York’s railway history. The Hotel’s namesake, William Milner, was the York Station foreman during World War II. After graduating from Edinburgh University with a degree in costume design, Meg has since been designing garments for people attending events such as fairytale weddings, balls and photo shoots: “My speciality is sustainable design, as I’m hugely passionate about the environment. I grew up in the countryside and live in a rural area, so I’ve always felt an affinity with nature and the environment. So, I decided that if I was going to create garments, I wanted to make sure it was by using materials that already exist, rather than just adding more. I work almost entirely with second-hand clothing and materials, a lot of which I find in charity and vintage shops. On top of that, I love up-cycling and repurposing things, which allows me to think outside the box and make something unique every time. It’s a very creative and intuitive way of working.” Meg has designed a number of bridal dresses for her clients, with her bespoke designs starting from £1,500. She continues, “My favourite design was the first official wedding dress I made for a bride. She’d been following my work for several years and was having a fairythemed wedding in Scotland, which I thought was so special! I made her gown using all kinds of things from lace tablecloths to fabric scraps and beads taken from broken jewellery. It was a lot of fun to create and she looked amazing in it!” Discussing her views on the fashion industry, Meg explains, “There’s definitely been a positive shift. A lot more slow fashion brands and designers are starting to surface, which I think is great. Many people are being more considerate now when it comes to clothing.
