Cheylesmore Manor House, Coventry Coventry is an historic city with a rich and diverse history, situated in the heart of the country. It is known for its medieval Coventry Cathedral which was left in ruins after WWII bombing and home to an unfortified Manor House, previously the only unfortified royal palace outside of London, Cheylesmore Manor is now used as a stunning ceremony venue. The remnants of a medieval royal palace, the gatehouse of Cheylesmore Manor, is at the heart of the city on New Union Street. The magnificent timber building is a key piece of Coventry’s rich and important heritage. The manor is believed to have been built for the Earl of Arundel in 1237. By 1320 it had passed to Queen Isabella, wife of Edward II, along with the lavish Cheylesmore Park that surrounded it. Her grandson Edward, the Black Prince, took possession of it after her. The building we know today is, in fact, only the gatehouse and parts of two cross wings to the original manor house. The Manor House houses three beautiful ceremony rooms: The Queen Isabella Room, The Black Prince Room and the Library Room. www.ceremoniesinsidecoventry.co.uk With bespoke ceremony co-ordinators on hand to guide you through every step of the way, helpful Register Office teams and even easy to manage personalised stationery packages, Coventry can’t wait to welcome you for your ceremony, from weddings to naming days, commitment celebrations and civil partnerships - we can host it all. Selecting the right photographer to document your special day can seem like a very daunting task, so we’ve asked Nicholas Rogers Photography for his expert advice. 79 93 One lucky reader can win £1,000 to spend on wedding jewellery! Wedding season is in full swing, and we’re already obsessed with the showstopping events across the Midlands that are already taking place! Couples continue pushing the boundaries to capture their love stories and personalities perfectly. They’re thinking outside the box on ways to create memorable days and ultimate celebrations with loved ones. Summer is a fabulous time to tie the knot for many reasons! Who doesn’t love the warmer weather and don’t get me started on the limitless colour palettes on offer? From neutral shades to pastel fantasies and bold pops of colour, you can’t go wrong! If you’ve just become engaged, we recommend starting to plan early to avoid disappointment. Many suppliers get booked up early during this popular season, some one to two years in advance. Embrace nature with abundant florals, as summer offers unlimited options compared to other seasons. We’re talking roses, gardenias, carnations, sunflowers, hydrangeas, dahlias, peonies, sweet peas and more! It’s important to note that some don’t handle heat well and could wilt quickly, so ensure blooms are kept cool with plenty of water and shade. We all know the Great British weather can’t be trusted! Even if you’re exchanging vows at the peak of summer outside, it’s always essential to have a wet-weather backup plan in case of any summer showers – it’s better to be safe than sorry! Most venues will offer a space indoors as an alternative if the heavens open. Still, those opting for completely al fresco celebrations should consider covering such as a marquee or tipi. These structures are also perfect for heatwaves, providing plenty of shade if the sun beats down. In the late afternoon, utilise outdoor spaces by creating comfy outdoor settings so guests can sit back and relax while catching up. For catering, keep things light, fresh and crisp, as the last thing guests will want is a hearty, heavy meal in the heat before dancing the night away. Some popular options include picnics, hog roasts, BBQs, delicate seafood, afternoon teas and more! Ensure seasonal food is being used to ensure top flavour and taste. Keep everyone cool with a retro ice cream van, an iced coffee truck or frozen cocktails for an added extra. It’s essential that guests are hydrated with cold water, juices or even fresh lemonade throughout the day. This issue is full of wedding inspiration from start to finish, covering all aspects of the planning process, from finding the perfect venue to dream-worthy gowns, the latest offers, beauty advice, venue styling and big-day bakes. It doesn’t stop there, as we also cover top honeymoon destinations worldwide for memorable trips together. So, pull up a chair, grab a cuppa and get reading! TALTON LODGE AND TALTON HOUSE 01789 459 244 | www.taltonlodge.com Talton Lodge and Talton House combine a 10-bedroom Queen Anne manor house, brimming with history but by no means old-fashioned, with a walled Victorian kitchen garden where there is a festival-style marquee and fun accommodation. Celebrations normally start at Talton House with ceremonies on the lawn overlooking the lily pond, followed by canapés and drinks on the surrounding lawns with mature flower beds, a tennis court and a croquet lawn, followed by parties in the giant hat marquees in the walled kitchen garden. In the house, there are numerous reception rooms, including a large hall, drawing room, movie room, bar, dining room, games room and a new kitchen. The Victorian-walled Kitchen Garden once fed those living across the road in the 18th-century manor of Talton House. Now it presents a micro-festival site in surprising contrast to the formal lawns and flowerbeds of Talton House. In the Kitchen Garden, there are two linked giant hat tipi marquees decked out with matting, fairylights, a pavilion with a fully stocked bar and local beers on tap. Guests can sleep in the house bedrooms or in accommodations such as the Tree-Boat House or Orchard Waggon in the walled garden, or just outside the walls is a converted barn with a reception room and a kitchen. Talton House Barn and Kitchen Garden are surrounded by mature trees, woods, wildflower meadows, an orchard and flowing water. There’s even a natural swimming pool at the top of the orchard where guests who cannot fit into the varied accommodations can camp or park a camper van for the night. Ceremonies take place on the lawn in a traditional marquee or between the 300-year-old acacia trees on the lawn. For celebrations of 60 or so, lovebirds can have services in the hall. Receptions start in the Talton House rooms and the lawns in front of the house, accessed via the garden room bar, from where drinks and canapés are served. Wedding breakfasts will take place in the giant hat tipis in the walled garden with up to 100 guests. Couples often choose to come to the Spring Feast or Christmas Feasts, where the venue opens as a pop-up restaurant so everyone can try a Talton feast and enjoy cocktails and music. www.abigailsteedphotography.com www.abigailsteedphotography.com WINSTANLEY HOUSE 01163 665 642 | https://winstanleyhouse.co.uk Nestled amongst lush parkland and comprising the most delightful combination of Georgian and contemporary architecture, Winstanley House creates beautiful backdrops for events. Rutland was a place I had been eager to explore, so I eagerly accepted the chance to visit this well-known estate with views of Rutland Water. I was excited to finally see it in person alongside my partner, and I can confidently say that it lived up to our expectations! SETTING THE SCENE Despite being the smallest county in England, Rutland offers a wealth of history and charm that appeals to all. After a peaceful morning exploring the local market towns, we arrived at Rutland Hall Hotel & Spa, surrounded by its picturesque rolling countryside and captivating views, especially of the tranquil waters. Spanning across 70 acres, this property holds a fascinating history that dates back to the 19th-century when it was originally built as a hunting lodge. Over time, the site fell into disrepair under different owners. However, in 2020, the Patel family intervened and breathed new life into the space. In 2021, the site was renamed from Barnsdale Hall Hotel to Rutland Hall Hotel & Spa. Today, the property stands proudly, radiating charm and character while fostering a strong sense of community. Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by the friendly and attentive staff. After dropping off our bags, we enjoyed a romantic stroll hand-inhand around the grounds. There are numerous activities available, such as crazy golf, pitch and putt, a bowls green and treatment rooms to enhance stays. Additionally, the property features a 22m indoor swimming pool and a gym for fitness enthusiasts. REST YOUR HEAD The Hotel offers a variety of accommodation options to cater to different budgets, ranging from rooms to suites as well as self-catering lodges. We had the privilege of staying in a superior double room, which provided a guaranteed view of Rutland Water that could be enjoyed from the comfort of the bed or the balcony. The modern room was impeccably maintained and featured a soothing blue color scheme that complemented the waterfront setting, promoting a sense of complete relaxation. It boasted a cosy sofa, a seating area, elegant wooden paneling, captivating artwork, a desk, a flatscreen TV and floor-to-ceiling windows that enhanced the picturesque water views. The layout of the room was thoughtfully designed to provide ample space without feeling empty or overwhelming, creating a cozy ambiance. The generously sized bed was luxuriously soft, ensuring a seamless and restful sleep, leaving us refreshed the next morning. The bathroom was equipped with a spacious bathtub and an overhead shower, offering the best of both worlds. TO DINE FOR After a day of exploring, our hunger grew immensely. We were eagerly anticipating a delectable three-course meal, especially after hearing rave reviews about the on-site restaurant Blossoms. Situated at the heart of the lakeside Hotel, it offers the perfect ambiance for creating cherished memories over a delightful meal. We settled comfortably in a booth and faced the difficult task of choosing from the diverse menu options. The new seasonal menu, thoughtfully crafted by the passionate executive head chef Sumit Chakrabarty, aimed to celebrate flavors without unnecessary complexity. For my starter, I indulged in truffled wild mushroom arancini accompanied by a homemade tomato compôte, melted buffalo mozzarella, pesto, and parmesan wafer. It was an absolute delight! This was followed by a perfectly cooked pan-fried wild stone bass served with baked celeriac, grilled artichokes, and ratatouille. To conclude the meal, what could be better than a blackberry cheesecake accompanied by a blackberry parfait and marinated blackberries? Each dish was beautifully presented, showcasing the chefs’ skill in utilising fresh, local, and seasonal ingredients, which was evident in every mouthwatering bite. The next morning, we were treated to an exceptional buffet breakfast where the food was impeccable. The spread included a variety of hot dishes such as fried and scrambled eggs, sausages, bacon, baked beans, hash browns, mushrooms, and tomatoes. Naturally, I couldn’t resist trying a bit of everything, followed by some freshly baked pastries and refreshing fruit juice. I then indulged in an assortment of fruits before savoring some fluffy pancakes drizzled with maple syrup. Needless to say, I was completely satisfied after such a delightful breakfast. EXCHANGING VOWS The picturesque setting provides a stunning backdrop for weddings, offering numerous opportunities for beautiful photos! The Lakeview Terrace boasts a magnificent ceremony backdrop, showcasing panoramic views of the grounds and Rutland Water. Couples can also opt for indoor ceremonies in the Lakeview Lounge, which features a modern, bright, and airy ambiance. The neutral décor and abundance of natural light allow for customisation. For larger wedding parties, the new Pavilion Suite is an ideal choice, accommodating up to 500 guests for events such as Asian weddings. The spacious venue provides ample room for a Mandap or ceremony backdrop tailored to match any theme. Alternatively, the Lakeview Suite boasts high ceilings and luxurious furnishings, creating a sophisticated and elegant atmosphere for receptions. THE FINAL VERDICT Our experience at Rutland Hall was truly delightful, thanks to the exceptional team, cosy rooms, delicious food and breathtaking views. It’s the perfect spot for pre-wedding festivities, romantic getaways, and relaxing mini-moons. We’re already looking forward to our next visit!
