Make all your decisions based on what the two of you want, don’t try to accommodate everyone, it’s not their day! Include all the little personalised quirks that you want, guests do appreciate them. Just enjoy each other in the moment and be as present as possible, the day goes by so quickly. I loved doing our couple portraits with Emma. Both John and I were so nervous about taking pictures as we are quite reserved when it comes to that. But we had the best time sneaking away and just goofing around together. It made for some lovely honest memories. My hair and make-up artist, Sonja, really helped me to get through the stress of the morning. She could tell I was getting overwhelmed so gave me lavender to smell and breathe in with – that really calmed me down and kept me focused. I also appreciated the breath mint as my mouth was so dry with nerves! At every wedding or party, all the boys pitch in to throw John (Baby) in the air to the dance we are all familiar with from Dirty Dancing – you’d think they’d be better at it! The kids all started chasing John around with giant glowsticks using them as swords and throwing balls at each other, it became a 10 on 1 battle with impressive lightsabre sounds from all involved. He loved the battle, the people who had to gather the ballpit balls did not. We had set aside a small table in honour of my mother who recently passed. In John’s speech, he invited everyone to take a quiet moment to have a ’toast with Roberta’. John’s cousin, Emma, baked our amazing cake. I asked for a textured white look and provided her with some leftover eucalyptus and thistles. I made a beer pong table, as John and I had played this many times together at parties in Australia – we had to have it at our ‘party’. 46
