PRE-WEDDING WELLNESS IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE PLANNING Claire Mills is a physio and pilates expert and the founder of Core LDN based in East Sheen. Here, she explains how much pilates you need to do to see the difference. She says, “Research suggests there are benefits to doing pilates just once a week, however, I would recommend doing it two or three times weekly. You will notice and feel the strength and flexibility changes quicker. From a physiotherapy point of view, to strengthen muscles, make changes to muscle length, and improve joint flexibility, you need to be training that way three times weekly. What type of pilates is good for beginners (especially those starting in the lead-up to their wedding) and why? Claire says, “Mat pilates is a great place to start for beginners as it allows you to learn the foundations of pilates in particular; the breath pattern, how to correctly work your deep abdominals and learn the correct postures for the exercises. You can’t hide on the mat, it will easily highlight imbalances,” says Claire. Claire continues, “If you’re not keen on the mat and would prefer to do Reformer Pilates then I’d recommend that beginners start with a private one-to-one session, or a beginner-specific class to learn the above foundations and how to implement these on the reformer which adds in spring resistance and movement. In my opinion, you can end up cheating on the reformer if you have not learnt the fundamentals and your global muscle system can become dominant of the postural muscle system that we’re aiming to target with pilates.” What are the benefits of beginner pilates exercises? “Starting with lower-level exercises and then progressing through the levels ensures that you are correctly activating and using your deep abdominals and postural muscle system, building strength and control from within. By doing this, you will undoubtedly feel and notice changes quicker in terms of strength and toning,” says Claire.
