BLOG SPOTLIGHT Here at Your Sussex Wedding, we love to stay up to date with local suppliers’ blogs, they are the ones with their fingers on the pulse of weddings after all! So, when celebrant Gayle Davis-Tyrrell from local lovely Sunflower Celebrations told us about her new post, we knew it was one to share. Over to Gayle... As we enter 2025, the wedding landscape continues to evolve. Micro-weddings, with guest lists of 50 or fewer, are becoming increasingly popular. This shift reflects a growing desire for more authentic and unique celebrations, prioritising personal connections. There are some key trends shaping 2025 weddings. •Destination micro-weddings: Couples are seeking unique and unforgettable ceremonies, exchanging vows in meaningful locations such as wild woodlands, family farms, rustic barns or even their own back garden! •The rise of the celebrant: Professional celebrants are in high demand for their ability to craft personalised ceremonies that reflect each couple’s unique love story. Expect more non-religious ceremonies featuring heartfelt readings, meaningful rituals, and vows written by the couple themselves. •Focus on quality time: Micro-weddings allow for deeper connections between the couple and their guests. There’s a growing emphasis on meaningful interactions and quality time spent together. There are many advantages to micro-weddings such as... •Reduced stress: Smaller guest lists significantly reduce planning stress, allowing couples to fully enjoy their special day. •Increased budget flexibility: Smaller weddings free up budget for some of life’s other exciting events. •Enhanced personalisation: Intimate settings allow for more personalised touches, reflecting the couple’s unique personalities and love story. •Stronger connections: With fewer guests, couples can spend more quality time with everyone and of course each other. Alice and George’s big day was not only styled in a stunning shade of green, it was also figuratively green, thanks to the environmentally conscious credentials of their venue Images courtesy of Annamarie Stepney Photography Gorgeously GREEN 24
My first memory of George is him drunkenly giving me a fireman’s lift during freshers week at university,” Alice says. The two lived in the same halls accommodation and were part of the same friendship group. It wasn’t until they moved into a shared house of 10 people for their second year that they grew closer. The two shared the same taste in music, which led to George offering Alice his spare concert ticket to see The Killers. Despite trying to convince their families that they were just friends, George asked her out a few weeks later. George popped the question on their first night on holiday in Spain. He found a private spot complete with stunning views that he knew from previous family holidays growing up. “I was caught completely off guard, as we’d been so busy that I was hoping for an uneventful bit of rest and relaxation!” Alice remembers. Needless to say though, once she’d said “yes” she was both excitable and emotional for the rest of the week. “I wouldn’t have changed it for the world,” she says. The couple began their venue search locally and Southend Barns immediately became a top contender. “When we were welcomed to the venue the first thing we noticed was the wonderful attitude of the wedding coordinators who showed us around,” Alice remembers. “They were genuinely interested in our story, and you could tell that they really cared about making our day special.” A stunning, sophisticated barn venue, the duo also found themselves attracted by the fact that it didn’t require too much additional decor. The chefs were open to the idea of a fully vegan, bespoke menu, which was important to the couple. “They even seemed excited by the challenge,” Alice recalls. “They were also exceptionally considerate of the environment. Big celebrations can often be very wasteful, which is something we wanted to avoid.” So, with the date set for 5th October 2024, Alice now shares her memories of this super-special day... SETTING THE SCENE When Alice and George set to work planning their wedding, they devised a dark green palette with sunflowers and selected the venue’s Amber Sunset table settings package. Centrepieces were burnt orange vases handmade by Alice at Matt C Smith Ceramics, a pottery studio in Charlton Barn where she and George had been attending classes for two years. Sunflowers, carnations and leaves were crocheted by Alice and her mum, Sandy. It was a huge undertaking involving many hours of work but looking back, Alice says it was worth it, although maybe not recommended for anyone with a busy schedule! The bridal bouquet, the three bridesmaids’, 12 centrepieces and 15 buttonholes were also crocheted by Alice with help from her mum. She included carnations daisies and a variety of different leaves. Alice’s maid-of-honour is a graphic designer and created all of the couple’s stationery and signage. Using a dark green monotone theme, she included sunflowers and baby’s breath floral linework around the borders. There were more lovely, crocheted sunflowers in the corner of the table plan on a background provided by Southend Barns – their vintage table planner. The gold border place names were purchased from Amazon and Alice handwrote the guests’ names. They opted for table numbers rather than names – with 12, coming up with anything creative would have been a real challenge! George works for Rolls Royce and as a perk for employees, they offered a free car for their wedding day. So, the couple selected the elegant Rolls Royce Ghost in Arctic White. FOOD FOR THOUGHT Southend Barns’ caterers, Roots, offer an array of set menus, but since the couple wanted a fully vegan meal, the team created something bespoke. This opened with a selection of five canapés for guests to enjoy during the drinks reception. The wedding breakfast started with poppadoms served with chutney. This was followed by a festival sharing style main course of curries and other Indian inspired “ 25 REAL WEDDING

dishes. “This was a great way to get guests interacting with each other as they passed dishes around,” Alice says. The meal ended with sticky toffee pudding with ice cream. The pair opted for a late-night food choice of vegetable paella as a nod to their Spanish engagement. Many of their guests expressed that they couldn’t believe everything they’d eaten was vegan. “No one went hungry,” Alice says. LOOKING THE PART Alice looked stunning in her Madi Lane gown, Avery, featuring ivory lace over a layer of glitter tulle and blush satin lining. “It felt bridal enough yet still playful and romantic,” she says. “I wanted a dress I could comfortably move around and dance in.” She accessorised with a cathedral-length veil and green gemstone jewellery. George wore a bespoke suit from Gresham Blake in Brighton. The emerald green herringbone jacket was lined in a paisley fabric. His floral tie was selected to match the sunflower and carnation theme of the bouquets, and he finished the look with a crocheted carnation buttonhole. The groomsmen were dressed in grey, slim fit, textured two-piece suits, which they wore with black shoes, green ties and pocket squares to complement the dark green palette. They too wore crocheted carnation buttonholes. The bridesmaids wore emerald green full-length chiffon dresses with floral embroidery detail around the waist. TIME TO CELEBRATE Live band Roots kept the dancefloor full during the evening. The couple found them through an agency Southend Barns recommended and we’re told they were incredible. “The dancefloor was packed during both their sets, and they finished the night with Mr Brightside by The Killers, a perfect ode to our first date,” Alice remembers. “If you have the budget, a live band is really worth it in our opinion.” MEMORABLE MOMENTS “We felt so immensely happy and incredibly lucky,” Alice shares. “To be surrounded by everyone you love and care about it so special. The venue coordinated the whole day so we could just relax and let it happen.” The ceremony will forever have a place in Alice’s heart: “The moment you first see each other at the end of the aisle is surreal and beautiful,” she shares. The speeches too were a highlight: “They were all very funny, most notably George’s mum, Denise, sang a personalised a version of Living Next Door to Alice by Smokie with the refrain changed to ‘Alice, Alice, George has married Alice!’ The rest was not so clean... everyone was in stitches!” the bride tells us. Alice’s top tip for all you soon-to-be weds out there is to focus on the big things first. “You don’t want to miss out on the perfect supplier as they get booked up,” she says. “Also, get a wedding coordinator so you can just enjoy yourselves on the day.” THE GETAWAY The newlyweds set off on honeymoon to Tanzania and Kenya for a multi-stop safari and beach holiday. It was planned by Jane Woollaston from Holidays Please. “We’re so lucky with the animals we saw, and the overall experience was unlike any holiday we’ve been on before,” Alice says. “A once in a lifetime experience.” REAL WEDDING 27
