WINE AND DINE Nestled in the High Weald AONB on the edge of Ashdown Forest, you’ll find Downsview Vineyard. Whether you’re looking for an intimate, blank canvas venue or some very fine local wine to toast your nuptials, we highly recommend checking it out. Our editor Kelly paid a visit at the end of the summer, attending one of the Vineyard’s Sunday tasting lunches. Read on as she tells us more... Seated across from the vines where I could soak up the last of the summer sun and take in the panoramic views of the South Downs, I met charming owner and passionate winemaker Toby who was to take us through his wonderful wines paired with an incredible five-course tasting menu catered by Fitzgerald Catering (https:// fitzgeraldcatering.co.uk). Having taken over the business five years ago with his wife, Toby makes no fewer than 10 varieties of wine. Established a decade ago, the vines now cover two acres, where the six grape varieties flourishing here allow Toby to create a stunning range of white, red, rose and sparkling. Initially producing 2,500 bottles a year, the vines now yield a whopping 13,000 bottles. Having enjoyed an aperitif of recently bottled, aromatic Bacchus with elderflower notes, England’s answer to Sauvignon Blanc, lunch began with The Gardener’s plate. A riot of colour in front of me, this starter packed a fresh punch with zingy flavours of pickled vegetables. As with the entire meal, it really gave the feel of dining on freshly foraged ingredients or produce direct from the farm. This was paired with Downsview’s Old Vine White 2022. Toby is on a mission to save vines of more than 35 years old, which are quite rare in this country with only around 100 acres surviving. These old Germanic varieties, these were mostly planted back in the 80s. The winemaker’s vision is to become the custodian of the majority of the country’s old vines, firmly believing they contain wine magic. The product is reminiscent of wines produced in the Italian Alps – a pure, light, very moreish white. The delicious Quackettes (duck croquettes) were served on a fruity fig jam and paired with the Pantiles Pink NV. With strawberry and cherry notes, this lovely light sparkling rose was designed to drink in your pyjamas Toby says! Created during the pandemic from pinot noir and pinot meunier grapes using Champagne methods, it boasts a delightful soft texture. Unbelievably fruity, pairing well with the fig jam, this too is scarily moreish! I can certainly see it making a welcome appearance during a summer postceremony drinks reception. A foodie highlight for me was the miso tuna tartare, paired with the Anderida 2018. As it needs to be aged for a minimum of six years, this was about ready to drink. Adopting a local Anglo-Saxon name, this wine for me gave smoky notes of gunpowder. The luxurious main course was venison served with a plum and cobnut salad, which was a real treat alongside a glass of Pinot Noir. Unlike most red wines, this is actually at its best when served chilled on a hot day being so light bodied. Admittedly not being the greatest red wine fan, this made it the perfect option for me. I was sad to reach the last course, wishing these breathtaking combinations would go on forever! Served in a super-cute little plant pot, topped with edible soil, the pear and blackberry dessert was as refreshingly light as the rest of the meal with just the right amount of sweetness to close things out. It was time for another glass of bubbly, this time the Heron’s Ghyll NV. A fruity sparkling wine, it was a dream pairing with the pear and blackberry. Toby describes it as an English prosecco with Champagne bubbles, which sounds accurate to me! On site, there’s also an English vermouth maker, In The Loop (www. intheloopdrinks.co.uk) and indeed, it would be remiss not to avail ourselves of her produce too! So, we finished with a delicious orange Negroni – what a treat. All in all this was an absolutely wonderful experience, that I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend. With such incredible wine produced on your doorstep it would be a shame not to celebrate your home county as you celebrate your love, as long as your venue permits. Especially since Downsview Vineyard offers bulk purchases for blank canvas venues. Sample the stunning wines and food for yourselves at one of the Pizza Nights, every Friday 6pm-9pm. On Saturdays, the Vineyard is open from 2pm-9pm serving wine and food from 2pm-8pm offering drinks, pizza, and platters of local meats and cheese. Wine is also available to purchase and take away. Keep your eyes on the website for details of 2025’s super clubs. You can even host your reception at the Vineyard and Toby and his team welcomed their first wedding in 2024. The winery offers an intimate space upstairs in the speakeasy bar or downstairs able to accommodate 50 loved ones. What’s more, there’s glamping available on site in the shape of four bell tents, with plenty of other accommodation options nearby. © Daniel Thomas Wedding Photography THE GEORGE IN RYE 01797 222 114 | www.thegeorgeinrye.com The George in Rye is located in the heart of the beautiful and romantic town of Rye. Among its meandering cobbled streets and pretty half timbered houses, in the heart of the town’s citadel is where you’ll find this gorgeous venue. Effortlessly warm and welcoming, the hotel is part-medieval with later Georgian additions. Lovingly restored in 2022, it offers an eclectic mix of quintessential English and contemporary elegance. St Mary’s, the parish church of Rye, dates back to the 12th century. Located at the highest point of the town, it’s just around the corner from The George presenting a memorable ceremony option for you. Alternatively, The Georgian Town Hall, with its distinctive facade is just up the hill from The George and within easy walking distance. The town crier, in his ceremonial robes will greet your guests on arrival before escorting you to the main building’s chamber for your ceremony. Afterwards, once he’s delivered the wedding cry announcing your marriage, he’ll lead you and your party down the hill to The George. Should you prefer to tie the knot at the venue itself, the magnificent Georgian Ballroom is available to you and 110 guests with its hand painted Chinoiserie panelled walls, minstrel’s gallery and large bar area. In the evening, it’s transformed for dancing and entertainment. The Long Room is both elegant and intimate and offers space for an unforgettable ceremony with up to 50 loved ones. It has soft lighting and a small balcony that opens out onto the front of the hotel. Later it can host 30 for a wedding breakfast. For al fresco vows The Courtyard is for you. Their work brought Lauren and Alex together. Lauren found herself attracted to Alex’s fun-loving energy, thoughtfulness and impressive work ethic. Meanwhile, Alex immediately found himself smitten with Lauren’s silliness, kindness and drive. Their shared love for music and tennis laid the foundation for their friendship, leading them to concerts, tournaments, and ultimately to a love that blossomed beyond the workplace. Four years to the day after their first picnic date, Alex surprised Lauren with his proposal. “I pretended to be playing golf with a mate and asked one of Lauren’s friends to organise a brunch with her that morning,” Alex shares. “While she was gone, my friend (also my eventual groomsman) and I swiftly transformed our newly refurbished kitchen into a romantic haven with petals, candles and music.” Lauren very nearly scuppered the surprise, as noticing the house was a lot tidier than normal when she returned, she insisted her friend join her in the kitchen. However, thanks to some quick reactions from her eventual bridesmaid, Sarah, she managed to get Lauren to go into the kitchen on her own, where she found Alex waiting for her. “Initially, she thought it was an anniversary surprise. It wasn’t until I got down on one knee with my grandmother’s ring that she realised what was going on!” Alex remembers. The couple instantly fell in love with Southend Barns thanks to its blend of rustic charm and modern elegance. The spacious barn with its flow between rooms provided ample space for their 140 guests, while the stunning décor ensured a picture-perfect backdrop whatever the weather. “Beyond the aesthetics, the incredibly kind and thoughtful staff, coupled with the exceptional food and drinks sealed the deal,” Alex explains. Join us as the groom shares more memories of the big day – 17th August 2024... SETTING THE SCENE Having decided on a rustic glam vibe with a blue, white, green and pale pink palette, the two handmade pottery plates as their wedding favours, which not only fit the theme like a dream but added an element of their story. “We took a pottery course early on in our relationship and absolutely loved it,” Alex explains. The plates were dark blue and bore four different floral designs with a blue arch around the outside. Each one was packed into a small rustic bag tied with brown string. The table plan was designed by the maid-of-honour, Sophie. It was a map of Tooting where the couple live with the tables named after their favourite places. These included their favourite pub and restaurant, their house, Sophie’s house, Tooting Common and Tooting Market. Name tags were attached to the guests’ menus by blue ribbon. Lauren carried a cascading bouquet featuring white, pale blue and green blooms, a mixture of delphiniums and coral garden spray roses finished with eucalyptus. Alex’s buttonhole meanwhile included a white rose, coral spray rose, blue eryngium, white astible and foliage. Beautiful blooms provided many a feature in the form of an arch for the gazebo ceremony area including large blue and white hydrangeas with some light pink touches. The centrepiece on the ceremony table was used again for the guest book table at the reception. This was long and low and featured a blend of the same flowers used throughout. The five beams in the barn were also adorned with flowers and the table centrepieces were minimalist, delicate bud vases sitting atop light blue table runners. Also on the tables were matching napkins, blue water glasses and gold cutlery for extra warmth. Clear, textured charger plates framed the setting. Dotted throughout were the flower-filled lanterns, which had been used earlier on to line the aisle, and milk churns filled with flowers to make a feature of the bar area. “Lauren’s grandfather was a cab driver, so we wanted to give him a nod since he’s no longer with us,” Alex shares. They hired a white taxi to pick the bride and her parents up from where she was getting ready and drop them at the venue. 29 REAL WEDDING

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD The day’s dining started with canapés served during the drinks reception along with local Tinwood sparkling wine. These included the newlyweds’ favourite pork belly nuggets; Thai fishcakes; courgette and onion bhaji; pea, mint and feta ristotto balls; and baby brushetta. The wedding breakfast began with a starter of either Burata with Nutbourne tomatoes, or Roots’ allotment vegetable salad. This was followed by the couple’s choice of sharing mains, which were just what they wanted to make the dinner feel sociable. They opted for lamb kleftiko and a Moroccan veggie tagine with salads and potato sides. For dessert guests could choose between luxury profiteroles or sticky toffee pudding. The evening food was served later that night – delicious pizzas. LOOKING THE PART Lauren had her heart set on a Hollywood, red-carpet look, and chose a Gemy Maalouf gown with low back and high, round neck. The top half was embellished with silver detailing and gems, and boasted an ivory satin train. She accessorised the look with a silver and faux-ivory bracelet, a pearl hair piece, and Charlotte Mills glitter bridal shoes. The hair comb holding her veil in place was adorned in pearls and diamantés. In the evening, desperate to get out of the dress, beautiful as it was, she changed into white tuxedo trousers from Me + Em, silver wedge trainers from Russell and Bromley and a silver sparkly top. “I wore a navy three-piece Hugo Boss suit, perfectly tailored and complemented by classic black Hugo Boss shoes. To stand out from my groomsmen, I chose a light blue Pal Zileri knitted tie, matching the colour of the ties I gifted to Lauren and my dad. I finished the look with white gold cufflinks, a gift from my parents from Lebanon, and a sleek black and silver Baume & Mercier watch,” Alex says. The groomsmen wore navy three-piece suits with champagne knitted ties to match the bridesmaids’ dresses. The bridesmaids’ champagne dresses were all different styles to suit each one. CELEBRATE IN STYLE Throughout the day, guests of all ages enjoyed classic games such as Limbo and Connect4, bringing a playful vibe to the reception. The main event was the DJ and live saxophonist combo, who performed both during the reception and evening do. “That was a real hit with our guests and brought the party atmosphere we were hoping for, with most guests asking for a playlist of our music afterwards!” Alex tells us. To help their friends with toddlers party the night away care free, the couple set up a creche and hired two nannies in the bridal suite. “This was one of the biggest wins for us in planning the wedding and was well received among the young parents,” Alex shares. The biggest hit with their loved ones though was the personalised guest book. The couple wrote playful blurbs in it for each of their 140 guests, sparking conversation and laughter throughout the day. Of course, no celebration would be complete without a cocktail hour featuring the couple’s favourite spicy mezcalitas, a nod to a memorable trip to Mexico. “These were incredibly popular with our guests and really shifted the mood from wedding dinner to evening party,” Alex says. MEMORABLE MOMENTS “The ceremony outside was absolutely stunning and so much more than we could have imagined,” Alex shares. “This was helped by our incredible registrar bringing a lovely energy to the occasion. Seeing each other for the first time too was really special. “Our first dance was so much fun! Lauren did an outfit change and we felt like celebrities walking back into the barn with lights on REAL WEDDING 31
