47 MAKE A RUN FOR IT When celebrating at a stately home or country house venue a mantelpiece feature runner is a must! Summer has officially arrived in full bloom, which has got me ruminating on my favourite topic – wedding flowers. I must confess, I adore fresh flowers, none more so than our British spring and summer varieties, so I do hope you’ll indulge me for a short while as I wax lyrical! The perfect wedding blooms effortlessly fill an empty venue with romance, fragrance and colour, creating the ultimate ambience; and with the right florist on your side, they can speak volumes about the two of you and the vision for your big day. What’s more, they’re efficient! Pedestals, aisle meadow arrangements, ceremony arches and much more can all be moved into your reception space after the “I dos” and seamlessly transform into centrepieces and top table backdrop. You get the most from your budget, your theme carries through and you keep waste to a minimum. Your wedding day is all about the two of you, so why not have a think about how you can tailor your flowers to further tell your love story? The language of flowers combines tradition with sentimentality and conveys a meaning that maybe only the two of you will understand, but as you’re the two most important that’s all that matters. For example, gypsophila is a wedding staple but perhaps its meaning, everlasting love, has been lost over the years. Some of my other favourites are: cornflowers symbolising prosperity and friendship; hydrangeas meaning gratitude and understanding; peonies speaking of romance, prosperity, good luck and a happy life; and roses, in particular pink, which symbolise admiration. So, you see, you can write an entire love letter to your new spouse through your bouquet – how romantic. I do hope some of this has whet your appetite for more wedspiration; if so, don’t miss our al fresco weddings feature, where flowers have a part to play. Plus, this issue’s Hot Topic experts are discussing intimate weddings. So, as ever, enjoy and keeeep planning! Catch up on the latest from around the county NEWS STAY IN STYLE You’ve got to follow that dream wherever it may lead, and for Jo and her husband Toby it was to West Sussex. They had a vision, which would include weddings, hospitality and guest experiences. The Vale House & Stables, an imposing Victorian double-fronted property was snapped up as a blank canvas, and as luck would have it is located in the midst of West Sussex’s well-regarded wedding venues, vineries and other well-known landmarks. The former stables, set within a walled courtyard of The Vale House have been beautifully developed into five boutique lodges, sleeping up to 12 guests on a two-night minimum stay, offering wedding couples and their guests versatile accommodation while retaining the delightful vaulted ceilings and character of the former stable blocks. “I’m absolutely over the moon with what we’ve been able to bring to the lovely village of Findon,” Jo says. “We’re also bowled over with the support from local businesses, public houses, restaurants, florists, make-up artists, hairdressers and many more.” The Vale House Lodges enjoy a wonderful relationship with local venues Cissbury Barns, Findon Place, Long Furlong Barn and Field Place Manor. They’re also surrounded by numerous other quality venues including Highden Estate, Castle Goring and Southlands Barn. “It’s always been my dream to be involved in a couple’s wedding preparations and to deliver this Sussex-based business where we can make such a positive contribution is an absolute dream come true,” Jo finishes. Learn more at https://thevalehouse.co.uk Nearlywed SPRING INTO ACTION! The team at Bailiffscourt were delighted to find themselves in this year’s Muddy Stilettos finals for Best Hotel in Sussex. These awards are entirely based on guest feedback, so they immediately sprung into action to thank their guests for putting them forward. As well as being a wonderful wedding venue with much to offer its couples, which you can find out about by turning to our Spotlight on… Chichester to Worthing feature this issue, there’s plenty for you and your guests to do here during your stay. Perhaps you fancy a spot of afternoon tea? Perfect for celebrating with your bridesmaids ahead of W-day, or just because you deserve a treat, enjoy the sundrenched courtyard or curl up by the fire and indulge. Additionally, it might be time to pay a visit to one of the most beautiful spas in the south of England. The spa here takes its inspiration from nature, built in the style of a Sussex barn it offers tranquillity and indulgence. Take time to gaze at the sky from the heated outdoor infinity pool, or float in the stunning outdoor pool. Keep your eyes on future issues to learn how Bailiffscourt gets on in the awards, and find out more about the venue at www.hshotels.co.uk/bailiffscourt IT’S PAMPER TIME If you can’t justify an indulgent spa break in the run up to your big day, when can you? Spabreaks recently revealed East Sussex National Golf Resort and Spa as Sussex’s most booked spa following insights from its 2023 consumer data. It totalled 31 per cent of all bookings made in Sussex that year. Coming in in second place is Chakra Spa at Crowne Plaza Felbridge, Gatwick, closely flowed by Alexander House Hotel Utopia Spa, and Ockenden Manor. With the fifth most bookings in and around Sussex being for Ashdown Park. Spabreaks.com founder Abi Selby says, “It’s always insightful to look back across the past year and see where and how customers are using the spa. At Spabreaks.com we know that everyone uses them in different ways, whether it’s for a rejuvenating weekend break or just a quick visit of an evening. We make sure our offerings suit everyone, and that the spa is a place accessible to all.” Book your next Sussex spa break at www.spabreaks.com 8
A DECADE OF FLOWERS, FOOD AND FABULOUS WEDDINGS Celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2024, Petal & Feast has grown organically over the decade to form a focus on wholesome, nourishing celebratory feasts; all-natural, wild floral arragements for weddings, and more; all from the all-female team's charming Secret Barn wedding venue nestled at the foot of the South Downs near Storrington in West Sussex. Surrounded by the glorious Sussex countryside, they can boast an everexpanding flower field where they grow their own British blooms, and workshops for Sussex residents to enjoy creative time making their own floral arrangements in a relaxed, picturesque setting. Founder Hannah Best tells us more: “Nearly all our flowers are grown on site by us. We love putting them together in big installations to bring the beauty of the outside into celebrations. Using seasonal flowers is so important to us; not just for environmental reasons, but because fragrant, beautiful locally grown blooms add further romance to a couple’s story. I love how you can almost date a bouquet to the week depending on the components – roses with the first of the dahlias is a particularly delicious moment. “Our feasts are also a very big part of what we do. We all love our food and aim to create celebratory dinners that are relaxed and delicious. Our menus have grown over the years, but plentiful, seasonal salads have always been a mainstay.” For 2024, the Petal & Feast team have expanded their flower field to grow some of their own vegetables, and even more flowers due to popular demand. Hannah adds, “Over the last few years, we’ve had a lot of demand from couples wanting to collect our freshly picked flower buckets so they can DIY their wedding flowers.” Discover more at https://petalandfeast.co.uk LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION Kane Harman, otherwise known as Kandid Kane Photography, based in East Sussex, specialises in beautiful documentary-style photography. While he covers the whole of the South East, he most regularly shoots weddings on his home turf of East Sussex and nearby Kent. Kane is very excited to enter the world of videography, having recognised a demand from couples for a short video to enjoy alongside their photos. “That’s why I’m learning the ropes and, while I’m still in the learning phase, am offering this service free with all full-day packages,” he tells us. “The videos so far have been a huge success and have been thoroughly enjoyed by my happy couples. I love making them and creating different versions with copyright-free audio that they can share, or a cherished song from the wedding day.” You can find out more at www.kandidkane.co.uk STARS OF THE SMALL SCREEN If you’ve watched BBC’s My Big Gay Wedding recently you may have recognised the venue chosen by Adam Johnson and Dan Mackay for their big day as Trading Boundaries, East Sussex. The Brighton-based couple celebrated their 10th anniversary of meeting at the time the BBC was looking for participants for its documentary commemorating 10 years of same-sex marriage being legalised. So, the two were the perfect choice for the show, hosted by comedian and TV presenter Tom Allen. When the couple discovered Trading Boundaries they instantly fell in love with it. “Beautifully quirky and not the generic venue, it was equipped with everything we’d need,” Adam explains. “Across the lawn stood a beautiful handmade fabric Indian marquee that somehow gave a wonderful nod to Brighton Pavilion. Then we met the in-house wedding coordinator, Jenny, who was just lovely and exactly what we needed.” On the wedding day, Saturday 7th October, host of the show Tom Allen was on hand to assist the couple, as well as acting as ring bearer alongside the couple’s pug, Egg. Meanwhile, celebrant Chloe Green led the service on the lawn, and Sophie Ellis-Bextor performed al fresco for Adam and Dan’s first dance. Afterwards, they made their way into the bespoke Indian marquees for the wedding breakfast with entertainment from Dolly Rocket. As dusk fell, the fairylights came on around the venue and the festivities moved into the main building for more dancing with Brighton DJ Boogaloo Stu spinning the tunes. Trading Boundaries is an enchanting setting in the heart of the Sussex countryside offering couples exclusive use of the recently refurbished 18th-century coaching inn and grounds. The venue offers a blend of elegant English style with unique twists of rustic India, perfect for escaping the everyday! Discover Trading Boundaries at www.tradingboundaries.com, or pop along to the venue’s next Open Day on Saturday 22nd June, from 10am-3pm. www.sideyclark.com Scan to view video Image and video courtesy of www.kandidkane.co.uk www.facebook.com/saccophotography www.sideyclark.com LOCAL NEWS 9

Ashdown Forest, East Sussex, made famous by A.A.Milne as Hundred Acre Wood, is home to the glorious Ashdown Park Hotel and Country Club. The house itself is a spectacular Grade II listed, neoGothic mansion complete with period rooms and 186 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds. Whether you’re planning a grand affair or an intimate celebration, the venue offers the perfect space for your day. Your Sussex Wedding editor, Kelly Andrews, went along to find out more. GOING TO THE CHAPEL When the impressive and imposing Ashdown Park mansion house came into view at the end of the long driveway, I knew I was about to experience a very special stay indeed. Nowhere was this more evident than arriving on the mezzanine level of the soaring converted chapel, The Richard Towneley Suite – my breath was immediately taken away. This was thanks not only to the chapel’s innate beauty, but also to the wedding showcase event in full swing at the time. It was beautifully decorated for a wedding by some of Sussex’s finest – including Zara Flora, Chair Cover Chic and Highgate Florist – giving visitors a real taste of just how incredible the space could be for their wedding day. The chapel truly is a fairytale setting with its impressive 19th-century stained glass windows, designed by renowned Irish glass artist Harry Clarke, that cause a rainbow of light to dance around the room. It’s certainly an unforgettable spot for ceremonies, receptions and dining for 80 to 150 guests. On the ground floor is the John Hayward Room. Licensed to host the same number of loved ones. You can say “I do” here before moving upstairs for your wedding breakfast, making the chapel a self-contained wedding venue. GLORIOUS GARDENS My favourite spot, a dream for al fresco “I dos,” has to be the oh-so romantic Summer House, nestled alongside the lake on the manicured lawns. My top tip would be to tie the knot in the spring when the fabulously vibrant rhododendron is in full bloom acting as your backdrop. Here, you can seat 100 loved ones on the grass as you exchange your vows in the shade of the Summer House itself. You have the option to hold your ceremony here before heading over to The Richard Towneley Suite for the celebrations. There’s no shortage of stunning backdrops for your photographs among the glorious grounds. As you’ve already gathered, I’d recommend stealing a shot in front of that jaw-dropping rhododendron, but there’s also a beautiful Secret Garden you can sneak off to with your photographer for some memorable couple shots celebrating the best of the East Sussex countryside. AN INTIMATE AFFAIR Also dressed in their finest for the wedding showcase were the venue’s smaller spaces. Located off the East Wing corridor, the Lady Brassey is elegantly decorated in keeping with the history of the mansion. On the day I popped my head in it was fragrantly adorned in spring florals, the picture of a quintessential English wedding. It can host wedding breakfasts for 40 to 70 nearest and dearest, who can later move through to the Henry Smart room, with its own private terrace, for the evening do. If you’re planning an even more intimate day, then the Jacob Henniker room is the ideal choice for your vows. It’s conveniently located off the Hotel’s grand lobby and is suitable for 10 to 40 guests. Plus, the smallest of the venue’s spaces, Richard de Wych is available for wedding breakfasts for 10 to 16 nearest and dearest with views of the gorgeous grounds and lake. “There’s an impressive array of options here, whatever your plans and vision.” TIME FOR BED With 106 bedrooms and suites here, each named after a tree species found on the grounds, there’s plenty of options for you and your loved ones to stay overnight. As the newlyweds, you’ll have the enviable choice of several opulent honeymoon suites to retire to complete with indulgent touches including chilled Champagne, chocolates and flowers on arrival. My home for the night was Cherry, a vast and grand suite located in the East Wing with luxurious king size bed and an array of period features including wood panelling and leaded windows. Turner’s Fighting Temeraire even adorned the wall... although I assume not the original! Don’t miss out on a visit to The Country Club and Spa during your stay. Just a short stroll from the main house it offers the highest standards of pampering. I picked the perfect moment and was able to enjoy the tranquil 12.5 metre pool and Jacuzzi all to myself. It’s well worth checking out the extensive menu of treatments to relieve the stress or last-minute anxiety ahead of the big day too.
