Your Sussex Wedding - August/September 2023 (Issue 104)

fan of spontaneous moments and capturing genuine emotions on the other hand, candid photography is your go-to. These sneaky ninjas of photography will stealthily capture the laughter, tears and dancefloor fun without you even noticing. Finally, are you up for pushing the boundaries of creativity? If so, look out for photographers who can turn your wedding into an avant-garde masterpiece. Expect mind-bending compositions, experimental lighting, and awe-inspiring magical imagery.” Kelsie Scully of Brighton-based Kelsie Scully Photography says, “Weddings are inherently documentary in style, where the photographer captures the day as it happens, but some then mix in a hybrid of other styles as and when appropriate, which is what I do. I transition between different styles depending on the wants and needs of my couples.” JUST THE TWO OF US “Engagement shoots are a great way to get to know your photographer before the big day,” Gem tells us. “This experience enables you to feel more relaxed and comfortable in front of the lens. Practice makes perfect!” So true, and believe us, feeling chilled in front of your photographer makes the world of difference to the final images. Kelsie says, “Lots of people hate the idea of having their picture taken, but the massive difference I notice between the weddings of couples who’ve had an engagement shoot with me and those who haven’t is that they’re instantly comfortable around me. This is also true of their guests who’ve seen all these lovely photographs of the couple and that instant trust is invaluable for capturing great images on the day. If you’re on the fence about having an engagement shoot, there are a million reasons to go for it. I can’t recommend them enough.” IN THE PICTURE While any photographer worth their salt will be more than adept at capturing your big day to perfection, they’re not mind readers. So, providing them with a short list of must-have subjects is advisable. Toni says, “If you have specific shots or poses you want captured, be sure to supply your photographer with a shot list. I always suggest keeping the group shots to a maximum of eight as guests scatter like cats and it’s quite a task trying to round everyone up and not ideal if there are time restraints.” Making a list beforehand and discussing with your photographer in advance will also ensure you don’t forget any of your all-important nearest and dearest. “It’s important you both know exactly what images will be captured by the end of the day. If there’s a special great aunt you’d love to have a pic with, don’t forget to add her to the list,” Gem says. Remember, it’s not just about people it’s about moments. Nick says, “A shot list is like a wedding photographer’s secret treasure map. It helps us capture all the essential moments and the best way to ensure we’re not left scratching our head. Think of the key moments you absolutely want immortalised – exchanging vows, cutting the cake, Uncle Bob’s legendary dance moves... List them to ensure nothing’s missed in the wedding whirlwind. Don’t forget to leave room for spontaneity and candid captures though. Also, share the unique details that make your day special with your photographer. Perhaps you have a handmade wedding arch or your grandmother’s heirloom locket. They’ll love capturing these personal touches. “Remember, the key to a successful wedding photography experience is a healthy balance of direction and creative freedom. Provide your photographer with the necessary guidance through a shot list, but also trust their expertise to capture the authentic emotions and unforgettable moments that will make your wedding album come to life.” PLANNED TO PERFECTION In preparation for the big day, you’ll need to discuss with your photographer detailed timings of how your day will unfold, so that your whole W-day team of suppliers can work together to make everything run like clockwork. After all, no one wants to be late for the “I dos” or wedding breakfast! “Getting the timings spot on is crucial to ensure everything runs smoothly and all the necessary shots are captured,” Toni explains. “It helps to plan the www.kelsiescullyphotography.com www.gemharrisweddings.co.uk www.cuttlebone.co.uk www.cuttlebone.co.uk 54
