CAKES 47 TREATS Local cake makers share their favourite contrasting bakes Wedding cakes are quickly becoming something more than just a sweet treat. They are works of art that can incorporate your personalities, themes and the time of year. With so many options to choose from, it can feel overwhelming, but don’t panic; there is something out there to suit everyone. To help, we’ve asked local talented cake makers to share two of their favourite contrasting designs... Sweet BAKED BY ALEXANDRA Alexandra from Baked By Alexandra (www.bakedbyalexandra.co.uk) shares two contrasting designs that highlight the time of year. This log cake was so much fun to create, as the design was far from what many would consider to be a traditional wedding cake. I love the juxtaposition of the vibrant palette of the leaves in comparison with the weathered and aged look of the logs. The addition of the initials in the heart just made this one for me. I pay huge attention to detail, so small touches like this make all of the difference. My second design, the cherry blossom bake, is the epitome of a crisp, modern wedding cake. The sharp edges, tall base tier, crackled shimmer, elongated bow and hand-created cherry blossoms give a real touch of luxury while still being beautifully simple. WELSH CAKE HUT Melanie from Welsh Cake Hut (www.welshcakehut.com) shares two of their cake towers and highlights the flavours you can choose to make them suit your day. Our Welsh cake wedding towers are becoming one of our most popular wedding items, as the bride and groom can make it bespoke to them. They can be made with any number of Welsh cakes, from 100 to 400, and a choice of over 15 flavours. The ‘Love’ tower on the left is quite relaxed, made up of three different flavours of Welsh cakes: traditional, white chocolate with vanilla, and chocolate orange. There are a variety of sizes and shapes, including round and heart-shaped cakes. The tower on the right is much more structured, with a mixture of filled raspberry jam round Welsh cakes and heart-shaped white chocolate with vanilla. This tower has a personalised cake topper, and both towers are decorated with sprigs of flowers, which gives the design a delicate touch.
