Talented cake makers share their favourite bakes. As someone who has only worn make-up once for my own wedding a few years ago, my knowledge is definitely lacking, and, much to my friends amusement, I can’t tell you the difference between highlighter, foundation and concealer! Luckily, South Wales is full of some wonderful beauty experts who know all the tips and tricks to ensure you look your best on your big day. If you’re a bit clueless, like me, don’t panic. When looking for a make-up artist, make sure you read their reviews and that you like the look of their work. Most importantly, be honest with them. Whether you wear full glam on a regular basis, only add a touch of foundation, or, like myself, have no clue where to start, they are there to help you. A good supplier will reassure you and give suggestions to help you look like the best version of yourself. I highly recommend having a trial with your make-up artist before the wedding. Your trial will give you time to talk to your supplier, test out looks and ensure you’re happy with how you look before the wedding day. To help give you some ideas, we’ve rounded up fashion and beauty experts in the area and asked for their tips and trend predictions to ensure you look amazing. Happy planning! HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! Penhein Glamping, set in acres of Monmouthshire farmland, has reopened just in time to celebrate its 10th anniversary. This year sees the introduction of even more ways to spend time with nature while staying in one of its eight high-domed luxury Persian ‘Alachigh’ tents, including the launch of an adventure club aimed at younger children. There are over 250 acres for guests to explore and on-site activities include stargazing, meadow yoga, dawn chorus safaris, nature-inspired treasure hunts, bushcraft skills days and botanical gin foraging. For more information, visit www.penhein.co.uk AWARD-WINNING FLOWERS Wild and Fabulous Flowers, specialists in weddings, events and bespoke bouquets, has won a design competition. The goal was to create a springinspired tablescape, so owner Rhian and her team pulled out all of the stops and created a tablescape of dreams. Rhian tells us: “We used small footed bowls, ikebana-style arrangements, a floral chandelier and colourful candles. There were entries from all over the world, from Norway to South America. It was so exciting when we discovered that we had won! Our prize will be a four-page editorial in the next edition of Flora Magazine. We loved creating our design so much that we now offer tablescaping for weddings. This means that we can do all of your florals plus provide candles, candlesticks, vases and even scented candles. We have everything available to hire, including larger items such as urns, plinths and lanterns, meaning we can style your wedding for you, and we are fabulous at it!” As well as floral workshops, Wild and Fabulous Flowers are now hosting floral hen parties at Llandough Castle. You can bring a group of friends, arrange some flowers, or make floral headbands or baskets. The team can also organise the catering for you, from cake to canapés! More information about the workshops and tablescaping can be found at www.wildandfabulousflowers.com SEARCHING FOR THE ONE E&W Couture, based in Cardiff, has launched a new sustainable bridal collection. SWEET DREAMS Wedding planning can be stressful and even lead to sleepless nights. To help, Hotpod Yoga Cardiff has launched a new sleep-focused class. The class will offer a calming and restorative flow that is suitable for all and draws from different yoga styles to deliver ultimate relaxation, all set within the nurturing environment of a patented pod: a peaceful cocoon helping you to relax deeply and find calm. Dr. Sophie Bostock, who has partnered with Hotpod Yoga to support the launch of Sleep Sessions, says: “Many people struggle to switch off at night or wake up in the early hours with a racing mind. Yoga combines physical movement, breathwork and meditation techniques, which develop the skill of deep relaxation. Research shows that yoga helps people gain awareness and a sense of control over their minds and bodies, and there is evidence that regular yoga practice can help to improve not just strength and flexibility but also immune function, mental health, sleep quality and overall wellbeing. Sleep sessions will help people practice yoga in an environment curated for recovery with dim lights, relaxing music and pleasant aromas.” Check out www.hotpodyoga.com/studios/cardiff for more information. Where the Rachael and Sam had a romantic ceremony at St Davids Bishop’s Palace before moving onto their reception at Crug Glâs Country House Images courtesy of Grace Elliott Photography Rachael and Sam met through social media. “Sam had not been in New Zealand long and we instantly struck up a friendship,” says Rachael. “We chatted for a few months before we finally organised a date. It was truly love at first sight. All though our connection was instant, our relationship was a slow burn, as I have two daughters who were six and ten at the time. I had to make sure Sam was a keeper before he met Ava and Amelia, but he had me at hello, and his morals, ethics and loyalty would last me a lifetime.” Sam proposed in a seaside village called Akaroa in New Zealand. “It was my birthday, so Sam had booked an apartment for the weekend right on the waterfront,” shares the bride. “On the Saturday morning, he was bouncing around wanting to go watch the sun rise at the lighthouse, while I wanted coffee in bed! Finally, I gave in, and I must admit, looking out across the water was a beautiful start to the day. I turned around and there he was down on one knee, pale as a ghost. While I contemplated in shock that he was proposing, I noticed his face. Apparently, I was taking too long and the poor guy actually thought I was going to turn him down, which of course I did not. That night friends and family turned up and my birthday dinner turned into an impromptu engagement party.” Read on to see some of Rachael’s favourite moments from their big day... Sam’s mum collected mismatched crystal vases for our centrepieces, and each table had a cluster of flowers that I arranged myself. Due to the pandemic, we could not visit any venues in South Wales as we live in New Zealand. Luckily, years earlier, we had visited St Davids Bishop’s Palace, where Sam holidayed as a boy. I instantly fell in love with the rugged beauty of the coastal path and the history and spirituality of the castle. For me, there was never any question about marrying my Welshman in Wales. For our reception, Crug Glâs Country House immediately jumped out at us. The story behind the property, the fact that it was a working farm and the stunning accommodation were perfect. When I started talking to the staff, it was apparent that they were decent, genuine people, and they stuck with us every time we had to reschedule due to the pandemic. Ceir y Cardi provided a vintage 1977 Beaufort to transport us. We were very well looked after and constantly topped up with some very nice champagne. Rhwbeth Melys provided our delicious lemon drizzle cake with a berry compote in the centre and blueberry butter cream icing. It tasted so good and it looked beautiful. Every guest received a bottle of sloe gin that Sam’s dad had distilled. Sam and I bottled it ourselves when we arrived in Wales. We had a sit-down wedding breakfast followed by an evening buffet. All of the catering was provided by the exceptional team at Crug Glâs Country House. The food was delicious, not to mention the outstanding service from the staff. 30

My dress was a princess style that I purchased in New Zealand. My youngest daughter chose the gown and initially I said no, but I kept going back to it. Sam carried it in his hand luggage to Venice, then Wales, then Paris and home again! I wore a rose gold diamond necklace that Sam had bought me for Christmas and he surprised me with the most exquisite diamond pearl drop earrings on the morning of the wedding. One of Sam’s best friends, Naomi, was my maid-of-honour. She was an absolute star and did so much since I was on the other side of the world. Even an impromptu speech when our best man, Liam, got nervous. Sam chose a charcoal suit with a burgundy tie. On the day, I felt calm and relaxed, which was surprising, as that’s not me normally. Sam was nervous enough for the both of us. My mum surprised everyone by standing up at the last minute to be our celebrant. A highlight for me was Sam surprising the girls with Clogau bracelets and asking them if they would accept him as their stepdad. There wasn’t a dry eye, including stoic Ava and little Amelia, who threw herself into my arms, crying right then in the middle of the ceremony! Finding dresses for the bridesmaids was stressful, with one bridesmaid in Wales and the other three ranging in age. We chose an empire line with a full skirt to suit all shapes and sizes. Joy Cornock played the harp during our ceremony, which lent a spiritual air to the venue, with many guests saying it made the ruins even more magical. She also sang to our guests as they arrived at Crug Glâs Country House. Later in the evening, Rikki’s Mobile Disco and Events took over, and the dancefloor was never empty. A highlight was one of Sam’s good friends attempting a back flip! REAL WEDDINGS 31
